Emily Blunt finally getting her well deserved Oscar nomination. She should have received her first Oscar nomination in The Devil Wears Prada and can’t get over how she wasn’t nominated for Sicario. Phenomenal performance.

Sicario I understand why it did not get any noms for her. Her character gets pushed around, barely has agency and loses in the end. She gave a solid performance but it was not exactly the hero story that voters like to see.

Perri is absolutely right about the critical zeitgeist influencing Academy voters. They are busy people who can only watch so many things, so they end up mostly just watching the things that are already getting buzz. I'd be fascinated to see what an awards season with zero campaigning or awards press would result in.

My personal top 5: Juliette Binoche (The Taste of Things) Rachel McAdams (Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.) Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers) Julianne Moore (May December) Jodie Foster (Nyad) My predictions: Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers) Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple) Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer) Julianne Moore (May December) America Ferrera (Barbie) I can see Foster being similar to Lady Gaga in House of Gucci and getting in everywhere and then missing the final 5. Nyad is pretty weak with Bening missing a lot of critics top 5 and the movie not getting on the shortlist for makeup and hairstyling and visual effects. Further Netflix will be pushing Maestro, May December and even Rustin before Nyad. Not to mention the industry loves Barbie and America Ferrera’s monologue A note on McAdams, if her movie gets into Adapted Screenplay, I could see McAdams also getting in

Maybe I’m wrong but I don’t think they’re saying people will get nominated just because the movie made money I think they’re saying the movie made so much money getting so much attention and therefore more academy voter eyeballs, in other words a performance that was watched by 100 people has a bigger chance of getting nominated than one watched by 10

Do I think voters seek out specific critics groups' nominations to determine their own votes? No, not much at all. Simultaneously, do the same names continue to often pop up and thereby limit the likelihood that lesser known / lesser appreciated films/performances will be seen as viable to vote for? Yes. We have to remember, that many voters clearly do not watch every film (as much as we would love to pretend they do). The films they do choose to watch are likely a combination of those that personally interest them + those they hear good things about + "expected nominees" (often based on precursors).

In agreement with the choices mentioned. I really like Emily Blunt in Oppenheimer, and I think she is overdue for a nomination. Also from Saltburn - her name is pronounced Rose -amund, not Roz-amund. And she is great as well.

My current GoldDerby predictions (as of 23.12): 5. America Ferrera (Barbie) 4. Julianne Moore (May December) 3. Jodie Foster (Nyad) 2. Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple) 1. Da'Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers) As a fan of Oppenheimer, Emily Blunt getting nominated just makes no sense to me. Also I had to drop Taraji P. Henson (The Color Purple) after the reactions came out and I saw that Brooks is stealing all the thunder, even though I initially had more faith in Henson. Actually I'm beginning to feel fairly good about my 5, I don't see myself making a swap unless something big happens. Unpopular prediction: Brooks is gonna beat Randolph for the win.

In spirit, I see what Jeff is saying by indicating that the media bubble is mostly BS. However, he’s also not noticing the effect the media bubble and “film twitter” have on these races. The only reason you are even talking about America Ferrera or Emily Blunt in their really small roles is because of the hype around them. They aren’t the first thing you walk away from those films. If Oscar voters lived in a bubble, and only voted on what they saw, with no media intervention and Oscar campaigns, these categories would be wildly different. That’s why To Leslie was such a disruptor last year, because it seemingly didn’t play by “the rules”. Really, the Oscars should be more concerned with the best of the year, not the best campaigned, or the most loved by people with Letterboxes and social media. Ke Huy Kwon’s win last year was on the strength of non-Oscar voters, who by the time it came around to having to vote for EEAOO had almost been gaslit. I’m honestly not really sure they even seriously considered anyone else, but I wonder how many people voting would have picked someone else who “didn’t stand a chance”. This year, you can see on social media all the love for performers like Glen Howerton, Rachel McAdams, and smaller films like FairPlay, A Thousand and one, and Monica, but people aren’t going to throw away their Oscar vote. You might have really thought Patricia Clarkson was at the top of her game in Monica, but will anyone else? What if you thought Robert Downey Jr. Was just alright, but a different supporting actor in Oppenheimer impressed you? The race is being determined by non-Oscar voters, and being whittled down to a list of “acceptable candidates”. Seeing the negative pushback to To Leslie last year only makes me believe we will see more and more of the obvious, and less of the big swings. hell, Critics Choice couldn’t even find their random outside the box nominees this year.

Rea Pearlman single-handedly rescues the biggest movie of the year TWICE. Barbie almost became garbage at two points because Will Ferrell was allowed to do embarassing schtick and both times her character got the camera off of him and had the audience crying in about 30 seconds. I am not saying give her an Oscar but at least recognize that she had one of the most *important* little roles ever and if she didnt nail it the movie would have lost a lot of artistic weight.
