The Osma alum block is the one preferred by many wet shavers. Unlike cheaper compressed and molded alum blocks, the Osma block is cut from a larger alum block and machined and sanded into shape. It's solid through and through.

I bought this one after it got recommended to me on a shaving website. I thought it would get soapy when i use it but it's smooth. And it stings a little. It's good for cuts apparently. I liked it and did my research about what would be the best quality brand that makes these alum blocks. Because i tought i should get the best of the best once i'm through this one. But i guess i'm already having the best of the best. Great review. Thanks

Other alum blocks absolutely crumble over time. I always wondered why. Got an Osma alum block and it is great. No crumbling problem with Osma.

Rich, yes. I've got an Osma alum block that is now a quite small but still in one piece. However, the PAA alum block is also quite robust.

By the way, the last half of your video is blank space (black screen)." First off, thanks for pointing this out. I had to take down the previous video as there was an error in rendering. It'd be nice if RU-vid had their online editing tools back. So, I had to re-render, re-uploaded, and repost. So, thank you sgain for pointing this out.:) Second, yes, therr is a difference in the way these alum blocks are made. I did some reserch and the folks at Osma were very helpful.:)

Shawn, the Osma Alum block is very good. I have some that have worn down to a sliver but are still quite solid. I'd imagine this is due to being made from a solid block. However, I've tried a few others, some good, some just okay. The alum block I'm most impressed with in recent months comes form Phoenix Shavings=. I like the size and the no slip grip. although it does not appear to be made form a solid block, its still quite robust and solid. Spot on Mark, I purchased a 3 pack of GBS Alum Blacks on Amazon and they are literally crumbling apart. As you touch on, they seem to be made up of small pieces like rock salt, pressed in a mode with some type of binder to form the blocks. The seem to work well enough, but as I said, they’re crumbling and falling apart. Wish I seen this video before buying. A Proraso Block I have is fine, but Ill be getting the 3 pack of these. Have one at home, and will have one in my travel case… and have a spare. Great informative video. Thank you.

got mine today, i like that its a little rough. My last one seemed so smooth that it wasnt really leaving any ulum behind. The one question i always have is do you rinse your face after the alum block or just let it go.

How long does an alum block last? Do they dissolve after use or just lose their properties?

Hey Mark, I'm relatively new to wet shaving but I've really taken off in it and enjoy it. I still get some razor burn here and there though and I researched these alum blocks and feel they could really help me with this issue. My question is though 1) do you wash it off after applying it? And 2) does it effect the scent of your shave soaps and creams?

Hi, Michael, welcome to the traditional wet shave!:) Glad to hear!:) I used to wash off the alum, but no more. It really is a personal preference. I keep it on and let it do it's job. Some wet shavers rinse it off after 30 to 40 seconds or so. After the Alum block, I apply my aftershave (splash or balm). Again, everyone's skin and beard are different. Experiment and change it up a bit. But the alum block, I've found, is a good step to include in your post shave.:) I've not experienced an alum block clashing with any scented soap.:) I've noticed that some soaps and creams have strong, bold scents and others are rather subtle. In either case, I've never felt that the alum block interfered. Then again, by the time I apply the alum block, I've done a thorough rinsing. I'd imagine the water rinse would knock down the soap scent more than anything else.:) Again, experiment. I use mine every day. Sometimes, though, I'll skip it if pressed for time.:) And on other rare occasions, I'll rinse it off.:) It's nice to change things up a bit when doing the TWS.:) HTH.:)

Christopher, I;ve never really times the length of use. I can say that the Alum block lasts a good long time. I've also come across another alum block since making this video. Appears tobe quite robust too Probably one of the better values in alum blocks.

I've used Osma for years, but with daily use they don't last 1 year, maybe 2 month even with drying. Maggard sells other brand with 'defects' at abt USD2-3/pc. The size is almost double, the defects minor to invisible. Whether moulded or not, the result is similar, it sting's''' Cheerio.

Sure, even myself still carry old OSMA stock. Just came across the Maggard's version n tried it. OSMA certainly is the btr product, but for what it is n the smaller size, I shall go Maggard (but in 2-3 yrs only, as quite some stock - hahaha). Cheers.
