Explore the process of osmosis in this updated Amoeba Sisters video! Video features real life examples of osmosis, important vocab, and introduces concept of water potential and turgor pressure in plant cells. Expand details for table of contents. We have an Unlectured resource on this topic! www.amoebasisters.com/unlectured
Contents:
00:00 Video Intro
0:59 Osmosis Definition
4:20 Osmosis in Animal Cells Example
7:00 Osmosis in Plant Cells Example
7:30 Water Potential
9:22 Create Something Prompt!
We are so appreciative of feedback we receive as it helps us continue to improve. In this video, we say the word "molecules" several times. Chemically speaking---the term "molecule" may be ok when referring to water but not salt as we did in 2:54. Salt is formed by ionic bonds [not molecular (covalent) bonds like you would see in water].
Vocabulary includes solute, solvent, passive transport, hypertonic, hypotonic, isotonic, equilibrium, water potential, pressure potential, turgor pressure, and solute potential.
NOTE: We defined water potential as potential energy in water (supported in reference: cnx.org/contents/bDIuMp-w@7.1..., but in the video, we do note that this definition can be expanded upon or worded in many different ways. In bio specifically, water potential tends to be used to describe where water travels based on solute potential and pressure potential.

UPDATE: Having a hard time with osmosis diagrams (like the one at 5:34) and understanding those terms hypertonic and hypotonic? We have a RU-vid Short for that! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nrwCvHyWkjI.html We like to pin clarifications & corrections at the top of our videos! We are so appreciative of feedback we receive as it helps us continue to improve. In this video, we say the word "molecules" several times. Chemically speaking---the term "molecule" may be ok when referring to water but *not* salt. Salt is formed by ionic bonds [not *molecular* (covalent) bonds like you would see in water] so we removed that statement. We also had removed a statement regarding the size of salt affecting its ability to cross a membrane: this video does not mention that salt disassociates in water, so the fact that a salt compound is larger than a water molecule is *not* the correct reasoning. Just to add: in our cell transport video, we mention ions generally cannot travel across the membrane unassisted, which would be more relevant to this. We also notice in the comments that people have questions about the diagram at 5:34. Many textbooks, in our experience, focus on the solution the cell is placed in only. Our diagram at 5:34 actually labels both the cell (as either hypertonic or hypotonic) AND the solution (as either hypertonic or hypotonic). If assuming no added pressure, look for the area that is hypertonic. It may be the cell that is hypertonic or it may be the solution that is hypertonic. *But as the diagram shows, the hypertonic area (assuming no pressure) is where the net movement of water will go.* We try to include addressing the cell as well as its surrounding solution, because Pinky noticed her students otherwise tended to memorize terms corresponding to swelling or shrinking, which turned out to hurt understanding. Hope that helps! :)

A fun way to demonstrate osmosis at home is with Umibudo (sea grapes.) Umibudo is packed in super salty water, which makes them shrivel up (by osmosis.) When you rehydrate them in fresh water, you can see them swell up as the water rushes in by osmosis! Osmosis right before your eyes!

My hs biology teacher emailed me the link to one of your videos... I think ever since that day I've SEEN every video, LIKED every video and subscribed. You two remind me of my sister and I ;) I think that's why our hs science teacher recommended you

THANKSSSS, my teacher teaches really fast like a sonic as the principal always want our school to exam earlier than other school causes a lot of teachers stressing to teach 15 chapters in just only a few months with lots of holiday this year. In addition, the students were also stressing about the high speed that the teacher teaches. Your video helps a lot. Thanks, i was struggling with chapter 3 about these and my friends were hoping me to teach them, I also don't know what i'm teaching lmao, after watching your videos, i finally got themmmm. The videos were also interesting and funny. That makes the knowledge to be more fun! Thanks a lot here =D
