I ordered myself a Madison after seeing this video on Jan. 11, pen arrived before noon on Jan. 14 by First Class mail (not Priority Mail). It covered the 2773 miles to Lewisburg, PA in what I consider record time. My nib needed about 60 seconds of polishing on 12000 grit micro-mesh to suit me. Thanks, Chris, this is a great value.

Thank you Chris for a nice review as always. I do have an "Osprey Scholar" with same flex nib that you have and enjoy their stub and fine nibs as well. It is nice to see an American company with a clear conscience of promoting writing in Public Schools and producing affordable quality pens with variety of colors and nibs.

Have been eyeing a Milano since before Christmas .... maybe time to pull the trigger on this model first. Question: did you mention adding a drop of detergent to the bottle of Noodler’s Turquoise? For what reason? The turquoise looked fairly deep/dark and not to light and pastel-like.
@chrisrap52
@chrisrap52 3 года назад
Osprey RU-vid videos use Noodler's Black (which was in small bottle). They say the they add a drop of detergent to the ink they use for writing samples. I said I did NOT add any detergent to Navajo Turquoise. Soap can increase cohesive ink property and reduce railroading. In my writing, I want to use ink without modification.

I can say that I absolutely love the Kanwriet nibs that this pen's nib appears to be from the same factory. I currently have 2 and have 4 more on order from India. Now I have to order yet another pen. Darn it all I was not trying to order too many other pens this year....

My Kanwrite works fine. Of course the feed can't keep up with the nib for long, but with milder flexing, and going slow it works well enough.

Thanks for reviewing this pen! I got one last December. Not bad. I've been interested in the Osprey brand for a couple of years but this is the first one I bought. I think it's a pretty colour, well made and a good size, but the plastic felt very cheap and unpleasant to me. That's obviously very subjective, and I didn't really consider it a flaw considering the price of the pen. This particular model, the Madison, is new or maybe a special edition, or so Osprey said in the email I received last year. I don't see it on their website anymore so maybe it was a special run, but all their pens use mutually compatible nib units, including some that will take Zebra G nibs. Writes well when not flexed, but nib was much stiffer and it railroaded much, much more with flexing than a well-adjusted FPR Ultraflex. I agree it's well tuned and smooth. Unfortunately the spring in the converter isn't removable, which can mean lots of rust in the future. Decent pen for the money and it satisfied my curiosity about Osprey pens. (They do have a great philosophy though, both of pen-making and in general, are very interested in promoting education and handwriting. A very worthwhile company.)

Thanks. Springs don't rust they are stainless steel. I will remove spring before I refill. Didn't have the patience to do while filming. Happy New Year.

I ordered one, arrived in mail box fairly quickly. I thought the nib was kinda like the Noddler's Ahab but with cutouts on the sides. Nib wrote very nicely just like the Ahab. But within 10-15 minutes of the first fill, had a big burp 😞 Luckily it was on a test page. Maybe I was pressing a little too hard to get the feel of its flexing. Don't know did not repeat it yet. Very wet writer. I also like it because it posts well. I thought only eyedroppers burped
@chrisrap52
@chrisrap52 2 года назад
Any pen can burp, some are more prone to. Your hand can warm pen, causing air to expand & push out ink. One of the features of fountain pens.

I picked up this pen after this review. Perhaps I just got a bad one as there seems to be no control with this nib and feed combination. While writing it just dumps a blob of ink all of a sudden. In essence it is similar to Noodler's Ahab; which have its own set of problems but I have been lucky with Ahab, out of four I bought I only had one bad one that needed some tuning.
@chrisrap52
@chrisrap52 3 года назад
Check converter screwed in all the way, I use silicone grease on converter threads. Mine was loose & ink leak out. Not when writing. Since reseating & greasing seems OK. Check that nib assemble is secure. I use silicone grease on those threads too. Hope you solve this.
@aristotlejb82
@aristotlejb82 3 года назад
@@chrisrap52 The converter for me seems to be tightly in and there is no leakage from convertor. I also applied silicon grease, I believe I picked that up from your youtube channel :) . For me the problem is while writing all of a sudden a small blob of ink gushes out of nib/feed and ruins the page. Also when I flush the pen during cleaning the water just comes out really fast. I haven't pulled the nib and feed out but I feel the issue maybe that the slit in the ebonite feed maybe as deep as Grand Canyon as about 1/4 of the ink from the converter just goes right into the feed when I point it down. I did reach out to Osprey and their Customer Service was excellent. They suggested heat setting the nib; which I tried but didn't help. The are going to ship me a new nib unit as they think the one I have is defective.
@chrisrap52

@larryglatt2548

I am told this is an Ebonite feed & therefore only certain inks will work with it, is this true & why please? I bought mine with a G nib, are there different types of G nibs?
@chrisrap52
@chrisrap52 2 года назад
Not true. Ebonite feeds work with all types of fountain pen ink. G nibs are a type of Zebra nib. They are made from different metals, can be steel, titanium or plated.

Imho, an optimal pen should only be heavy enough for it to write a consistent line without applying extra pressure. And from what I've seen and read, that problem is rather caused by what I consider to be bad nib design. Thank you for this review!
@chrisrap52
@chrisrap52 3 года назад
Independent of pen weight, all pens need some pressure to write, some more than others. Steel flex nibs will require pressure, their nature. The standard Osprey nibs write as well as Jowo & Bock steel nibs.
@WhenDoesTheVideoActuallyStart
@WhenDoesTheVideoActuallyStart 3 года назад
@@chrisrap52 I guess I wasn't clear enough, or maybe it's just a bias of mine, but with some pens I feel like I can just drag the nib across the paper and it will always effortlessly lay a perfect line, while some others require some pressing -into- the paper to lay a consistent line, almost like a ballpoint. I've read that it's caused by a "Baby's Bottom" grind.
@WhenDoesTheVideoActuallyStart
@WhenDoesTheVideoActuallyStart 3 года назад
@@chrisrap52 And I didn't mean this as a diss on Osprey, just a comment on pen weight. In my opinion a heavy pen just gives hand cramps, and it's really weird to me how many people prefer heavy pens.
@chrisrap52
@chrisrap52 3 года назад
"Baby's Bottom" is a condition from over polishing a nib. Not something you find is a mass produced nibs. Yes you can drag some nibs across paper & produce a line. Not what writing is. A fountain pen is a complex simple instrument. It is far from a ballpoint or felt tip pen.
