I was diagnosed with stage 3 “moderate” OA in my spine. I have a high tolerance for pain so when they said moderate I thought oh no big deal. I only got the x-ray done because my right leg would go numb or feel like it was on fire. I thought it was due to cardiovascular disease which I was told I had because of all of my varicose veins. Needless to say my doctor was surprised that I was still doing my job and happy and oblivious to the pain in my spine. Skip forward two years and the discomfort is worse in the morning and after a shift at work. Your video has helped tremendously. Thank you.
Thank you Dr. Jo! I’ve just been diagnosed with OA, stage 1. I could not believe how much pain I have had just from the first stage. I’m glad I found your exercises. I’ll give them a try and hopefully get some relief. I’ve lost 15 pounds too which has also helped. Mobic is what my Dr Rx’d and it is also starting to work. Getting old is scary. Thanks for all you do, and the wonder dog too! Blessings to you both!
I have had OA for a number of years L5 to S1. The pain has been debilitating to the point where I can't get out of bed and has greatly effected my everyday aspect of my life. I have had shots in the back, harsh meds, etc. I was on the brink of losing my mind...but somehow your video showed up in my recommended feed, funny how life does that. I've started these exercises and its a complete game changer. funny thing is I was a yogi for many years and these are some of our positions. I'm off most meds now. So I want to say thank you, and I'm actually going to go back into yoga for stretching and healing. Just subscribed.
I just found this, quarantine and all makes you pretty self-sufficient lol, and this really worked. I used to walk tons, but with being tied to my home for work and other chronic illnesses, movement has been suffering. My back feels so much better. It went from difficulty walking to the low burning simmer I'm used to. Thanks a lot!
Thanks very much. I've been struggling with an aching lower back and left hip for years and these exercises have eradicated my aches and pains after doing them. Can't believe it and I'm very grateful. I will continue to do these.
I'm sooo glad my Dr. recommended your videos! I have OA, and have done various exercises I've found online (for years) and even been given by a PT previously. NONE have done as much good for me as the exercises you have shown! Oh...I'm 74 and only recently been diagnosed with OA, although have had pain management injections since the mid 80's .Meds just don't really work well.Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
I hear you! I had Lyme disease, which left me with weakness/pain/nerve damage in my knees. My current doctor is trying to figure it out and discovered I have bone spurs on 3 vertebrae in the lumbar area. Explains why my lower back always hurts. I can't do exercises that require laying on my back because it hurts, and I can't do exercises that require being on my knees because it REALLY hurts. I also have a frozen shoulder, so that limits my ability to properly stretch. I'm disappointed that every back-stretching video I find is exercises I cannot physically do. And yet the state says I am not disabled enough to get any help, including medical coverage. 🤦🏻♀️
I feel your pain. I’m 31 with the following. Please throw my whole body away 😂😂😂. Continuously in pain and nothing really helps either. - Arthritis in lower spine L4-5 - Osteoarthritis in both feet - Disc bulge in neck C4-C6 - Scoliosis - Small Fiber Neuropathy - Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy - Fibromyalgia
Dr. Jo, you are my hero. My pain management doctor steered me to you to help me deal with my arthritic back and argumentative right hip. The right hip gets replaced on Valentines Day! Along with your exercises and aqua therapy, I'm not doing too bad. Thank you for your help. Best wishes for a good 2022.
Thank you! I need to start doing these more often and maybe even consider doing more yoga or something. After every skate session I usually get to the point where I can't walk or even stand up straight, and this results in me falling over and not being able to get up.
thank you so much for this video! ❤️ i suffer from fibromyalgia and arthritis. my doctors push me too much. these stretches were just enough. i feel relief even after doing this one time.
H i Dr joe Started some the excersies yesterday the ones that I could remmber and it did make more of a difference, will do your whole Program when I remmber each one daily. Again thank you. You right abought the night time I hardly sleep if any after 12am, My age is 58 years but am very active and it is so upsetting to think that this is going to inhibit my life.
Thank you! Did these yesterday and they seemed to help. The muscles in my back is what hurts on me. The dr. says it is arthritis and a little scoliosis. 😊
Are these exercises more for lower back issues? I have problems with my spine between my shoulder blades which results in serious discomfort in a morning.
Sister I can't explain how I'm feeling now and what your video did for me 🥲🥲 thanks from the bottom of my heart🙏🙏❤️ love From India please visit india some time
Thank you so much‼️ I was in severe pain and had taken pain meds but they didn’t work. I’m happy to say that my pain was relieved while doing the exercises😊
These exercises are great, i just tried these and man did i feel and hear pops and grunts XD but i immediatly feel better thanks. PS Wonderwoman is a cutie
Thank you so much, I have been trying to relieve my back pain by going to our local gym it does help but not enough. will be giving them a good go I need relief like everyone ele on this page and around the world. it's a shame the scinentist have'nt yet come up with a way to replace the cartalige, like they can replace hips, knees, fix broken bones.
I haven't read all of the comments, but I was curious if these exercises would help with pain from a spine spur. I'm not a huge fan of taking medication if I could help myself in another way.
I’m 24 and just got diagnosed with osteoarthritis, my back and hips are extremely stiff and sore lately. Is it normal for these movements to hurt a little? Will it feel loser afterwards?
Thank you so much for this video. I suffered a back injury as a child and now work as a nursing assistant and in school for nursing. I use to dance and kept my back from hurting because of all the stretching. This past winter I ended up in the ER because of severe back pain and had the beginning s/s of OA at 38yo. My back is always worse in the morning but I don't have much pain in the evening. My question is when is the best time to do these exercises?
You're welcome. If you have time in the morning, that would probably be the best time to do them, so they will help loosen everything up before you start your day.
I am 18 and I have this degenerative osteoarthritis .. I'm a bit worried cuz the pain is really bad at night.. I'm also worried cuz I wanted to be physically fit and join a gym but I don't think so it will be possible..Any advise?
Doctor Jo, I have this lower back pain and im afraid to do that exercises because it's very painful, shall I just endure the pain and force my back to stretch or just try it as much as I can?
Thanks Dr Jo for your yoga routine. I have used it for three months and it has greatly improved my suffering from OA, and vastly reduced my use of pain medication. For the final exercise, ( the side plank ) I have found it difficult to increase to a full minute. However, i can do 30 seconds on one side and 30 seconds on the other. Is this a more beneficial use of the exercise as it stretches 1 set of muscles and then the corresponding set on the other side ? Thank you again Gregory tufts
I'm really interested in doing your exercises for my AO, however on February 18, 2022 I had a total left hip replacement. I've gone through therapy and my doctor has released me. My question is am I OK to do most of these exercises.
I'm so happy I found your channel. I love the videos you post. I am paralyzed from the waist down and I locked one knee. Is there anything you would recommend to loosen it up?
Thank you very much May I ask what type of mattress should I use to sleep is hard medical or memory I appreciate if you answer me because I sleep now on memory foam and I still get lots of pain should I change it to a hard one Thank you for your help
If I do this often the pain is going to go away from my bottom? I have massive pain there only on the left side. I had two osteopath treatment but still haven't helped 😔thank you for your response in advance.
Thank you for another excellent video. For people who are not strong enough to do particle/modified planks (prone and side positions), what are some good exercises to build up to the particle planks?
Laying on my stomach in this position is the only thing that allows my lower back muscles and nerves to relax. I used to lay on my stomach when sleeping a while back, but medical professionals kept telling me not to because it was bad for my back. I decided to give sleeping on my stomach last night and it felt so good cause all the tension released in my back. The funny thing is no one ever really told me why one should not sleep on my stomach other than putting pressure, but the pressure is similar to laying on a roller, with the exception that the nerves and muscles in my lower back and glute on the left side release.
I'm 61 years old I was just told I had really bad arthritis of the spine and my legs and feet are going numb what is the best exercise for that? please help! Ty🙏🙏🙏🙏
Hii @AskDoctorJo can I get tips on how to sleep in the correct position?? Or any matress which is preferable?? I'm having severe pain when I sleep at wrong position & when I do take care of myself & sleep in a certain way I'm comparetively fine 😀
Please help me to releave my back pain ,I am struggling ,I am 50 years old,but I can't do child pose because my knee osteoarthritis can any modifications to the exercise
Thanks for your helpful exercises. I also have hard tendons and the doctor suggested stretches after exercising. After these exercises, however, I feel there's no need for more stretches.Or am I wrong?
@@AskDoctorJo well I just found this video my back and neck always having pain and burning sensation going up to my arms from my back more when laying down
Sometimes it takes doing proper stretches and exercises consistently for several weeks or even a month or two before it starts to feel better. So hopefully they will ease some of the pain.
I have tried the figure 4 this but can feel on muscle just above hips after a while even with a yoga strap . I was wondering if I can just lay on floor without grabbing other leg and lifting.
I'm a girl with 26 years old and I have arthritis in my back and I go 4 times in a week to the gym I told you that before but I have another question so I have pain come and go in my right side of my back in one side I don't know how to make to pain go away ? I trust you so much that's why I like to ask you my questions thank you
Dr. Jo. THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!! Your video was the last thing I tried before I made an appointment with a physical therapist. I can't believe what a difference this has made in the pain in my back and residual sciatica, muscle stiffness, and parenthesis. My mobility has improved exponentially as a result of doing these stretches once and sometimes twice daily. Two questions... 1. When I hyper-extend my back in the prone prop stretch, this seems to hurt my back right after and several minutes later after I'm done stretching. I've stopped doing it for the past few weeks and I've been fine. Do you know why this could be? 2. Is there a way to make a one time donation instead of paying for a monthly subscription?
You're welcome! I'm glad they have helped. Sometimes the extension irritates the area depending on how severe it is. So if it hurt, it's probably best to leave it out. Yes! You can make a one time donation on my website: www.askdoctorjo.com/ it's on the right side of the page.
Hi, Dr. Jo, I have lumbar facet syndrome (aka stenosis!) and have been in severe pain for several months. I'm working with a chiropractor who does spinal decompression (on a machine) and also with a PT. I have to say that some of your exercises, especially the "bird dog" and plank poses are too challenging for someone in pain. I will look at more of your videos to get other ideas, but would love to hear your take on this issue. Perhaps you could suggest alternative seated or prone positions? Thank you.
Doctor Jo I was informed that I have Degenerative arthritis of the lower back by my family doctor this morning. He prescribed a muscle relaxer every 8 hours and Ibuprofen every 8 hours with food. I have had two days of hell on earth with the pain, but it is getting much better. He also has scheduled me for physical therapy. The Osteoarthritis Back Pain Stretches and Exercises video you did, will this benefit me?
