I would say John Lavange deserves a statue, but Ohio State University’s marching band as a whole deserves the biggest of all statues. They are the best of the best and are far greater than the sum of their parts.
@@bakerstreet101 OSU, and other universities change routines every single weekend. They won't look as crisp and flawless as military Marching bands (including Texas A&M) who do the same routines every time, every year. My daughter marches for the best regarded SEC schools and Ohio State (B1G 10) is respected as the best there is.
Marching bands often brings me to tears because it requires immense cooperation and dedication from all. The humanity and selflessness of each member results in the whole being greater than the sum of the parts. Add to it, a high stepping drum major in full regalia and it’s amazing!
I agree with you completely. When my son graduated I cried knowing I would never get to see him march again. All those practices in all kinds of weather. It was just magical to watch them all perform. So much gratitude for all they gave.
I spent many years in a marching band; from the 5th grade, through high school and college. In band lore, John will go down as one of the greatest drum majors in the history of college and university marching bands. You folks in Ohio should be proud of having John there. He was superb.
You don’t have to lie about you marching since the 5th grade to make a point on this video. High school freshmen have a hard enough time just tuning, let alone 5th graders running around a field lol. But John is good. I agree with that.
We have a drum corps which has several 4th and 5th graders. They don't compete until they're about 12 years old, but, until then they are taught whatever instrument they want to play
John LaVange I watched the tryouts video and you were Candidate #1. And with good reason!! You were amazing. And in this video? Your back bend? Like no other!!! You handle your business like a boss!!! All the best to you young man.
Come on now, I thought they were coming out of the tunnel on an ESCALATOR...The uniformity and precision is SICK!!! It's the one thing we all can agree on regardless of the university attended or the band you were in...THESE cats rightchere are perfectly precise🙌🏾
It's mind-boggling where youtube can take you. The tryout popped up on my suggestion list. Never watched anything like this before. Saw John in the tryouts - SO obvious he was the best. Impressive. Was anticipating the announced winner at the end of the tryout video and...nothing! WTF. So had to google the Drum Majors at OSU and landed here. Congrats John. Glad you got it. You were so easily observable as the best at the tryouts. Those running kicks were awesome. On point and right on the beat. Made for a very satisfying watch. Consider me a fan (from Texas).
Yup. Discovered the tryout video this morning. Then they suggested this. I didnt know what i was getting into to....now i know i was watching a star rise.
This is a million X better than any ridiculous Super Bowl halftime show! But what would I know because I never watch the Stupid Bowl anymore!! Utterly magnificent showmanship Sir John LaVange and utmost respect!!!
Two different types of entertainment. A lot of people consider this boring and unimpressive. This is about pageantry and old collegiate traditions. Impressive if you're into this type of thing, but it's dated. I love it, but it's not entertaining to me - just aesthetically pleasing. I love pageantry in general. If there's a royal wedding, state funeral, or whatever it is, I'm all over it. But again, that's because I appreciate pageantry. The Super Bowl is about what's popular now and is much more dynamic and attention-grabbing. It appeals to a much larger group of people than this does. This doesn't touch most Super Bowl Halftime shows in that respect.
@@anyaw340 Very well commented analysis! I enjoy the pageantry also👍 My eyes well up everytime l watch bagpipers marching. I especially liked the military funeral given to fake biden in the 2020 election and the 21 gun salute they gave to President Trump!
I'm watching this during lockdown in the South of Italy. I didn't even know these things existed. I'm blown away by the absurdity of it all, but also by the performance of this guy LaVange, I saw the video of the tryouts and he was the obvious best.
🥁🥁🥁 # DRUMMERSRULE MY son inherited my late brother’s drums after he lost his battle with Cancer. My Max became Drum Captain of his high school’s Drumline. He ultimately performed at Carnegie Hall!!!❤ 🎼🥁🥁🥁
As a kid playing football, I never had appreciation for how athletic this dude has to be. As an adult that would snap in half if I tried any of what he does, I realize he may be one of the best athletes in that whole stadium.
Lamont Johnson That’s when you know they are doing it right xD. It’s amazing how smooth it is. Especially if you watch their top half of their bodies, there is little to no movement.
Being a Texas native and loving my Texas A and M University and Aggie Band I some times search other university band tryout and marching performances. I was intrigued when I saw the OSUMB drum major tryouts and they were absolutely incredible but they did not show who won. I found this video clip and it was super. I saw this young man tryout and he was spectacular along with the other young men and women. Your OSU band is unbelievable along with your drum major and I absolutely loved your shows they are awesome. I can see why the Ohio people love their band, outstanding. A fan from Texas.
Aggieman80 your school’s band is the only decent college band that I have seen in person. I’m always sad when they don’t make the trip to my school’s stadium. It’s a treat to see them.
3 steps per 10 yards, leaning backwards! Back bend. twirling. THAT's and Entrance... and the band sounded good too. He ran 140 yards from the tunnel to the goal post... didn't appear to be winded either. :O
it was an amazing site to see, John is just a winner through and through and it is great for the kids to see someone like him but also ANYONE in that whole show, they are all winners
I don't know why but the moment of the back bend when the feather gets squished is my most favorite part it's so satisfying! 😁❤️ You are the best drum major!
High School and College Bands really do not get the respect they are due, they practice for days and weeks for these presentations, The people at the games get to see them but very seldom are shown on TV. maybe a minute.
@@janeforst8464 WOW so vile you left people, it is your way or no way? Well ??? Jane I think it should be thrust up your???? You want high taxes? Open boarders? No Police? Well do you? Punk.
Look up Jackson State University's sonic boom of the south and Southern University Baton Rouge's Human JukeBox and you will see Amazing drum major back bends that perhaps influenced this drum major.
This brought a smile to my face. I can only imagine the practice and dedication it takes to perform with perfection! Absolutely awesome to watch so thanks for sharing!
After watching your tryout video, you had my vote. I'm not sure how much that should mean since I've never really paid all that much attention to marching bands or drum majors. However, I've spent my life paying very close attention to passion, professionalism, and excellence. The champion's mindset. You exhibited that in all of your stages of that audition video, not just when the routine went perfectly, but in the rare case when the baton was dropped. Your energy, expression, athleticism, creativity, drive, and excellence screamed, "I'm your guy!" Then I had to research and find out if you won. While watching this I can proudly say I teared up thinking about how proud you must be to have achieved such a goal. A goal that is so singular, I would imagine, in preparation and study. I must get back to my life now. Congratulations and God bless. John LaVange: Changing the World. One Baton at a Time.
That intro gave me chills. John LaVagne was an awesome drum major to watch. Awesome. And I stand by what I said in his tryout from years ago .... "John set the bar HIGH". Well done young man.
Wonderful! The twirling of the baton, God only knows the hours, years it took to perfect just that. The form on the backbend and the high stepping into the end zone! Somebody ran that countless times! A tutorial on how to be a drum major! I know everyone at OSU are proud of this performance as well as friends and family. It took great sacrifice and dedication to obtain those unique skills! A job well done!
Boy... You can just see the passion this Drum Major has. The Drum Major was my late fathers favorite. I miss my dad and the passionate Buckeye he was.. just brings tears to my eyes watching this. Always a Buckeye.
When I saw the tryouts and you ran onto the field like that I thought it was amazing. Then you did the back bend and I could feel my back crack watching you. After I saw everyone else tryout I knew you deserved it even after dropping the baton twice. You were way above everyone else. Much deserved! It’s a bit late but congratulations!
Well, my word. Awesome. The whole presentation was beautiful and flawless. Then comes the drum major!! That's what you call giving it all you've got ... then throwing some extra in the pot just for good measure.
You can make your mark on history in a lot of different ways. I don’t know anything about marching bands, I almost never watch football, but I do know this man’s name and probably will never forget it.
I love watching the ramp entrance. I have become a Buckeyes fan. I'm from South Texas, down by Corpus Christi. I came across a video of drum major tryouts with John in it. I knew as I watched that he would make drum major. Go Buckeye's!!
I did John, last night I watched the tryouts…you were immediately my first pick and remained that until you won!! Excellent job!!your high step is incredibly excellent!!
As part of a great marching band in my youth......one year, then I became a Rockette (“Vikettes) for the rest of my years.......I can say I know what this fantastic drum major was going through right before his VERY LAST performance. The entire band is so well-disciplined, so proud.....and 5heir drum major looks like one of the best of all time! BRAVO! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 May your life after college be as great and wonderful! 🕊💕♥️🙏🙋♀️🌹👏🏼👏🏼
This is so cool seeing our children here in the United States of America showing an ability to work together as a excellent well oiled machine. Go children who will and prove themselves as growing adults. I think I can say for many USA Citizens, "OUTSTANDING "
John, When I first saw you in the try outs I knew you would pick as Drum Major. I have been to so many OSU home games and watched the band come on the field. When the Drum Major comes on the field it is a sight to see. Congrats to you.
I’m a Texas A&M grad and want to say that was amazing. Kudos to y’all. We have a very special military marching band and y’all should check it out too. We have the best bands in the nation
I finished my undergrad at a HBCU and of course our bands are known for our halftime 'Shows'. Got to admit this was pretty good....persicision and cadence was excellent! I have no words for DM John LaVange.....dude is just 'sick' in a good way!
Congratulations Mr. John LaVange!!! Your years of studying, practicing, and determination have and will continue to pay off in your life. Excellent performance(s) here! By the way, I am a Michigan State University graduate but I ALWAYS give credit when I see excellence! Go Green, go White and Go Red, go White!😍😍😍
Being a truck driver and in every state at least 2 times I'll tell you one thing about Ohio them folks love their football and they love their state!!! They are a proud people!!!!!!!!
Just watched the video of his try out to be drum major. He was head and shoulders above the rest. Cool to see him doing his thing in the stadium. New found respect for drum majors and in this instance the Ohio State marching band which is simply superb!
You do realize that not one HBCU marching band is in the National top 20 bands in the country and that those traditions that they developed came from the bands that you are disrespecting. The First HBCU Marching Band was officially formed at Florida A&M in 1946 while the Ohio State University marching band first performed in 1878. The University of Illinois formed there first high steppers military marching band in 1905. The showmanship that HBCU bands came to use developed from the Military Bands to include West Point and the Naval Academies in the 1920's. That is where the high stepping came from...Military Drill. A woman named Beverly Barber watched this style played to Alexanders Rag Time Band and then brought it to Florida. It was new and different from what A&M had been doing while sitting in the stands. HBCU bands did not even really develop today's style until the 1960's when they became funded by the federal govt and became common place.
@@fayfay29 That's false. The earliest form of drum dates back to the days of Mesopotamia...which is in the middle east....and this African drum style is kinda overplayed. It's seen a lot in western culture but it's not THE culture. Especially when talking about the type of music from the eastern part of the world.
@@fayfay29 Whooaaaa...That is the dumbest shit I've ever heard. I don't know how you can take yourself seriously after saying that. Mesopotamia was located in the Middle East. The Middle East is a part of Asia. Just because your skin is tan doesn't mean you're "black"....whatever "black" means. Let's not stray from the fact that you think the drum came out of Africa.
I I was president of a Fortune 500 company and someone applied for a job and said they were in the OSU band I would hire them on the spot. The level of concentration, discipline and teamwork shown here would be enough for anyone to work for me.
+John LaVange -- Saw it backwards, but you were the best at the tryouts!! :) It is FUN, that's the BEST. My years marching are so precious to me..God bless!
