Was born and raised ☺️ now residing in Australia and have not been back home in such a long time. Growing up in Otara was by far the best years of mine and my brothers lives. Playing out in the streets till the street lights turned on and would walk to the dairy for $50c hot chips, didn't have a swimming pool so we would play with the outside hose😆 Otara Markets were always the best place to get cheap clothing and delicious food🤤 Grateful my parents bought our home where we grew up in, built our character's and molded us into the adults that we are today. Still beautiful to us and still home regardless of where we are in the world 👍🏼❤️
I was born and bred in Mt Roskill and all my Whanau were in Otara so it was awesome times at the Aunties and Uncles and then of to the flee market. I haven’t been home in 12 years and I reside in Toowoomba and I miss the food.
This documentary was 10 years too late. They didn't become poor overnight. They were brought here to work, at the peak of NZ's economy, to do the jobs that no kiwi wanted to do. Then when the economy went bad, there was no help for anyone.
Islanders are lucky they have a good opportunity to get a citizenship in a country that is liveable the islands are a lot harder to earn money and create a better life then NZ that’s why they move to New Zealand for more and better opportunity’s
@@gunslinger1665 its a two way street. islanders looked to move here for more opportunity. New Zealand accepted them to do the jobs that most Kiwis weren’t willing to do. but when shit hit the fan Pacific Islanders were left to be scapegoats for a lot of New Zealand’s societal problems.
I'm an Otarian child (no longer livin' there though), went to Yendarra Primary, Ferguson Intermediate and Tangaroa College. Born in the late 80's, grew up in Otara during the 90's. The swimming pools were the best - bombing with bottles (not me but my bro's and their boys), break dance'n on cardboard, marbles, chatter rings, handball, gutter board etc. Those were the best days.
Unfortunately We Were In Townsville Living When This Video Was Filmed!......It Was The Very First Time Townsville Airport Had Bin Made a International Airport N These Maoris Arrived! .....But, Otara Was My Home With My Solo Mum & 8 Siblings 4 Many Yrs!...My Very First Job At 15 yrs Old Was At The I.G.A. at Otara Shopping Centre, That No Longer a I.G.A....The Otara Markets Was Our Saturday Shopping Spree & Fed Our Faces!...Loved My Life In Otara!...My Hubby Knew A lot Of The Storm Troopers Bak In The Dayz!...Otara Will Always Have That Place In My Heart!!
True they where racist as shit to Maori children that’s why not a lot of maoris speak te reo today as our parents and grandparents where teached to not speak the language
This is interesting. Our family moved into Otara 1979, so I grew up up there right through until mid 2000. Flat Bush Primary - Clover Park Intermediate School - TC. I had seen it all, violence, gangs, graffiti/tagging, spacies! I’m one of the lucky ones to progress to a better life
Who remembers the SPACIE PARLOUR at the corner of Otara Town Centre, it was the only one back in the 80s? BMX bikes used to get stolen as the owners were too busy playing SPACIES! And back in those days there were lots of SCABBING at the entrance for coins to play SPACIES.
@ Brian Mapps YES BRO THAT THE ONE UPSTAIRS? THERE WAS ONE LATER ON LEVELED FLOOR, IT WOULD BE LOCATED WHERE THERES A ASIAN SHOP NOW I THINK. NOW A DAYS THERE'S MORE HUSTLING SCABBING
Worked at the power station in 1978 then again mid 80 to early 82 (those 6 chimneys). Often went to the East Tamaki (aka "the flying jug") for lunch. Nice toasties and the beer was cold.
My Mum Got Her First State House In Gilbert Rd, Otara Bak In The Sixties!..My Kids All Attended Bairds & Hillary College!..Loved The The Otara Flea Market!
@heavysaxophonemusic bata bullets. Made in Lyall Bay, Wellington ( home of fat freddys drop). Bata shoe factory is still alive and still selling shoes and employing local Wellingtonians. 3 Bata Place, Owhiro Road, Wellington
The Pakeha teachers at Hillary College ONLY were well versed in cultures. At Otahuhu College in the next suburb our teachers were all Pakeha and cultural insensitive peasants. With hindsight I realise my loss. Was bloody hard in the 80's for brown skin.
Wow this was 40 years ago, the Maori and Pacific Islanders are confident and articulate about their future. I hope Otara is still strong and thriving . There is such a strong community spirit among the children of Maui here.
Its only seperated from housing prices. Plus in NZ the state houses were predominantly out South conviently near all the warehousing jobs etc. It wasnt natural selection, it was by design.
I was brought up in otara since 1968- 1979. Then back in 1990 - 1993. Clydemore, Bairds, to Hillary college. Life was hard in low income families P.I. dawn raids overstayers. U had to survive in my time lol.
If I was a Islander I’d go back to the Islands... far better over there than NZ, the Islanders that stayed in the islands are far better off! and now in this global world they have loads of opportunities in the islands
MY PLAYGROUND (CASPER RD & FLAT BUSH) THE OLD SCHOOL TUNNEL 1980z CHILD. E.T. TAVERN A.K.A. THE FLYING JUG DUE TO ALL THE JUGS THAT USE TO GET THROWN DURING BAR FIGHTS. I REMEMBER MY UNCLE (JAMES HARRIS) HAD A BRAWL WITH OVER 40 STORM TROOPERS... THEY GOT HIM BUT COULDN'T DROP HIM R.I.P. UNCS. ONLY MY DAD & BARMEN SECURITY MAN SAMOAN (SECAYDA) HELPED MY UNC OUT
01:37 we use to play in those dirty ass waters as kids ( that's Sully Paea's house behind those trees/near power line ).....giving zero fcuks about sludge and years of chemical waste from long gone industrial factories dotted along Lovegrove Cres and further up the creek towards Springs road. My baby bro was the ONLY person I ever knew this 1time (in our whole time living near the Creek) had got a real bad reaction from those dirty ass waters lol...oh whatta life Otara 🤣🤣🤣
And I and my family still go out to Grey Lynn for church sometimes and we still live here in the area; well, now called Clover Park 🫥 used to be called East Tamaki / Otara / Wiri? Well for the area I’m in 🥴. Sometimes I wonder about why my parents would never leave South Auckland 😴 oh well ♥️
Brian Watson was our principal later in the late 80's at Northcote College. I didn't see him round much. I think he retired but maybe he moved on to somewhere else. Interesting hearing his voice and opinion after all these years.
Interesting, seems so long ago now , I experienced the pakuranga comparison, not from otara , But went to primary school in manurewa , late 60s early 70s , then moved to pakuranga , the two areas were very different back then,
I fell out big time with Mr Lindberg (English teacher at Hillary) in my 5th form year. Spent a lot of my 6th form year going around talking to businesses and other schools trying to raise money for the community centre.

My family had t9o 2 properties in Grey Lynn. Both homes were between 60-70k now worth over 1m. Its crazy how gentrification and immigration ruins an economy
THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT POLYNESIA IT'S DIFFERENT FROM MAORI?. I DON'T GET IT. CAUSE IN HAWAII THEY HAVE A PLACE CALL. POLYNESIAN COURTIER CENTER FOR 6 ISLANDS OF POLYNESIANS. SAMOA, TONGA, HAWAII, TAHITI, FIJI, AND NEW ZEALAND MAORI. 🍈🌴🍌🍍
Check out Southside rising and Stormtroopers NZ for some real history of Otara, insight into how and why Stormtroopers helped S/A evolve and give its locals some mana
