Excellent video and superbly interesting research. It helps one recognize the constraints of knowledge the pioneers of flight were up against. A refreshing reminder that should rekindle one's respect and humility for the early aviators. Thank you for sharing this!
Amazing man! Hats off to Lilienthal, and to all those who jumped off hillocks and high buildings, sometimes to their deaths, in order to make flight possible
Very interesting....I have just read that Lilienthal found the lateral control of the biplane to be on the limit of pilot weight shift capability. I once had the chance to try, but not fly, Stefan Nitsch's standard Lilienthal at the Wasserkuppe and, despite not actually getting airborne, the sensation of the wind in the wires and steadying the craft nose down into wind was an amazing experience.

First succesful flight with a glider device with goverment officials as witnesses: 1883 by Pedro Coll Font, El Calvario Park, Caracas. Official Gazette N° 3078 granted the first aeronautical patent, dated 17 Oct., 1883. After Lilienthal's flight Font Coll wrote to a french newspaper claiming it was not the first flight but his message fell into deaf ears of course, european false protagonism came first.
All these gliders just look like rags on a stick. But when you find out just what level of thought went into these designs, you can see these men were absolute brilliant. Obviously Otto's design was taken from a bird and the Writes was not. Leonardo I believe did something similar to Otto's design......and we all know what happened to Icarus!
