Just released from the Edison National Historical Park (www.nps.gov/edis/photosmultime...)
Otto Neitzel (1852-1920) was a pupil of Liszt from 1873 to 1875, going on to become something of an authority in the works of Tchaikowsky - a teaching colleague of his at the Moscow Conservatory. This recording is said to be the earliest known of a work by Chopin, and it was made in January 1889.

I have recordings of many pianists, but I am mostly interested in those who formed their pianistic style firmly in the 19th century (not just who were born in the 19th century). I'm interested in the mid century traditions and possible links with performance style going back to the generations before that. Check my playlists on my channel. I have only supplemented some pianists with a few rolls where there is a sad lack of acoustic recordings available: most of what I post isn't rolls.

The Grunfeld recording is the real stunner (and the voice of Otto von Bismark, and the 212 year (!) born ago Moltke)

I could hear the announcer mentioning a date in German: "23 January 1889"... the playing isn't particularly good, though I like it how he makes the solo- and orchestral part sound as a whole. It's funny how he resumes playing after the "bravo" shouting at 1:18!

Remarkable! - I wonder what else the Edison archives contain? The piano sound here isn't at all bad, but can anyone decipher what is being said? It seems that Neitzel went everywhere and knew everyone in the musical world at the time.

@otterhouse By the way, I was initially excited to see that these rolls contain a performance with Franz Wüllner accompanying Karl Mayer singing Schubert. Wüllner premiered Das Rheingold and Die Walküre, and being born in 1832 the recording is that of the of oldest-born pianist I know of. Unfortunately you can hear almost zero piano on the recording as the quality is very poor!

@martinadler73 Well done you have good ears - this early recording seems to have been a very informal affair very similar to Albeniz's. Even sounds like they were having a party!

@otterhouse Yes, I was entranced by Bismarck and Moltke! But the Grunfeld didn't seem as interesting or well-played to me as his flat-disc recordings from 1899 onwards - we're not in short supply of Grunfeld fortunately!

@RollaArtis I understood the following: "ehm, [Strauss?], Colonia Agrippina, ehm ... am 23. Januar 1889 von Herrn Dr. Neitzel aus ehh [Köln?]; bei Rudolph Ibach Sohn am Neumarkt, [Köln?], [other person speaking] - good - [other person speaking] - good! - [other person speaking] - GOOD!"

d60944, do you have many Bauer recordings as well as Harold Samuel and other early pianists? (Not rolls)

Wow, this is interesting! Recorded four years after Liszt's death.

Probably very good piano, needs to have the noise edited out.

But I want to listen, how Chopin plays, not Neitzel! :)
