Our Story:
We are Carissa, Iwan & Frankie the sausage dog, and in 2020 decided one night over a bottle of wine that moving from North Wales to Portugal would be a good idea. Within a month we were on the road to Portugal to find the perfect piece of land to call home. We picked up Albi, Joao and Simao the cats along the way, as well as Diogo the podengo and a flock of chickens.

Attention - in some areas it may be impossible to build a house, if there were no buildings on the rustic land that are in the old records. It is safer to look for property that has two books/registries: rustic and urban.

Be careful buying any derelict / abandoned house or barn, close to a woodland, or even just a straggly line of trees is considered a wild fire hazard 🔥🔥🔥 + extending any barn or house is not permitted at all, within a certain distance. As the homesteaders ' Portugal It Is ' found to their cost.. It can also be a huge problem if the site is on, surface bedrock , hills,, mountain or sloped terrain. Any natural outcrop of rock / stone should be investigated. . It can be difficult to get permission for , sewage tanks, soak ways, drainage, extending etc. When embarking on an exciting venture like this, the paper work is the least of your troubles, it's slow, but it eventually happens. Get the site right first, then start living your dream! 🍾🥂

Some may like your video but , to me, it was as if rattled off, often too fast ( You need to realize that those watching are trying to get a lot of intricate information (a difficult task on how it should be presented for sure . I suggest you do it over in chapters, have it typed on paper snd referring to the paper by showing where you are in the process.Slow your delivery way down and try not to giggle.

Your videos are always a treat. After viewing houses for three month on Idealista (perhaps good to mention in the links) my wive and I (from the Netherlands) visited the distrito de Castelo Branco last week. We viewed four houses and got to buy the one on top of our list, in the municipality of Idanha-a-Nova. We could not be happier. Will be back end of April for the deed. We struggled finding a lawyer and got ours from the Portugees site Geopredial (cannot link, RU-vid keeps removing my comment when I do), a site that lists all Portuguese real estate lawyers by geographical locations. Very helpful. Would be nice to visit you some time.

i checked to see if I could move to Portugal. Getting an appt. with a Portuguese embassy is very difficult, especially when there isn't one in your city or state. If you do get an appts, it could be months to wait. Secondly, have that much money in the bank can be a draw back. If things don't go well in your search, check to see how you get the money back. Some countries have a limit on how much you can sent out of the country. With the new tax laws, it's not as desirable to move there. Many of the people who have tried have put their story on youtube. Some are sorry they moved to Portugal. You must prove your monthly income is stable. The health care is supposed to be #3 in the world, certainly well above the USA's standing. I think, also, you must love the high heat in apts. with no A/C. A/C in the states is more of a standard of living rather than a luxury. Most Europeans are used to having no A/C. In 1956 my father built our home in New York City with central air. In my case, I have never lived anywhere without A/C. Jane, Philadelphia

If someone would build a small apt./cabin to lease to people needing an address; and aid them through the the buying process in their area. Also getting utilities, intro to area people; such as auto mech, etc...... this would be a great way to make extra income.

Very interesting video. I'm currently applying for my Portuguese visa and you're right things are constantly changing. The current requirement for a D8 digital Nomad visa is an income of €3280 per month, net of any tax and social contributions, but you don't need to have a Portuguese NIF number or bank account. The alternative D7 visa residency visa requires you to send 3 months' bank statements, a Portuguese NIF number and a Portuguese bank account with a minimum balance of €9120 (for a single applicant). All visa applications are made through VFS global who handle them on behalf of the consulate.

Greetings from Palm Springs California! I would like to add a couple of thoughts to your points. You should spend a good bit of time staying in and exploring the area before you buy. Make sure you meet your potential neighbors 😅 Before you go off grid. Go camping for an extended period of time. Most people enjoy the creature comforts of home and may be in for a shock when they realize that they are living primitively for the rest of their lives. Think about the future. How will you live this lifestyle as you age? How will you ever retire if you decide to homestead and be a Content creator?😂JK These are life changing decisions so please, take your time and research. Homesteading and farming is hard work.

What a really informative video for people thinking of moving to the EU. I'm certainly glad I moved to France before Brexit, which has made huge changes in the financial requirements for settlers. I know of one woman who is leaving France to return to the Uk, because she cannot satisfy the authorities of her regular financial income. Thank you for pointing out some of the pitfalls of moving abroad. Also, very important to know about the inheritance rules of the country you move to, they can be very different, you may need 2 wills, if you still have property in the Uk. Also, you will be may be liable to paying Uk tax, if you rent out a Uk property.

You did a great job! There are so many things to consider. I've been looking for the Right property for about 5 years (little less). My friends and family don't understand why i want to mov3 out of the US and especially since i live on an island! They've not traveled like i have! I either want a place in Central Portugal or, my favorite place is Terceira Island! Which i just found a place this week. I'm not due to travel there till later in the year though. Its tough! It would be easier to get supplies on the mainland. But the island has grown since i was stationed there in the early 1990s! I love it! I do have a few friends but no family. Heritage....i just ordered under another RU-vidr, sorry. Me and my Mom. I have to mail the pkgs off tomorrow! We know we are Irish/ Welsh, but I'm pretty sure mine is going to have middle eastern/ Isreal/Judea or even Egyptian. My Dads side. But he is also of Irish descent from his Mother. There seems to be a few reasons why you don’t see many Australians moving to Portugal! They have certainly clamped down on entry requirements, but that seems to be everywhere these days. We love your videos and found this one really helpful. We will be applying for D7 visa in the next few months. In terms of finding the right property - did you just get a feel for yours or did someone help or advise? We are looking to move to Central Portugal and live off grid but wondered if there was a consultant or off grid community/helper who could come with us on viewings to ensure we aren't buying rubbish land. We understand water is very important as is fire risk, fertile land etc. but some pointers would be great!

Just completed the video (with a little bit of pausing & note taking too). We are hoping to go via the D7 route, with a mix of savings (having the minimum amount required for a couple for the whole 2 year period) & also a smaller passive income. Hopefully this will be enough to get us there 🤞We have googled this many times & it always throws up mixed results of people trying for the D7 this way. Sadly we are still a couple of years away from even looking, so who knows what the rules will be by then

However I do recall it suggested the minimum amount in savings for a couple for the 2 year period AND also a small passive income of around €500 per month. It did make clear that nothing was guaranteed & that different offices (depending on your location in the world) interpreted the rules differently when compared to each other. Its literally a case of applying & chancing your luck

Howling dogs: sadly, it’s not just restricted to the countryside…. Portugal has a very different relationship with their dogs and they are more used as guard dogs than pets, so they live outdoors, and they bark at everything…. although slowly, that’s changing..people are slowly taking pride in having dogs as pets… But we are living in a village until we finish our renovation and our house is surrounded by in the immediate radiate, about 20 dogs…. No joke… who bark non stop day or night. Summer is worst as you want your windows open it’s so hot and it can feel and sound like you are in a dogs kennel… it’s insane. I often find myself almost going on a killing spree..this from someone who loves dogs, used to be a dog walker and yeh, can’t stress enough how much I love dogs bit wow….when you are being kept up, your mind can play some pretty dark scenarios!! So yeh….be very very mindful of that…try and scope the area before you buy and see how bad it is!

Really interesting and useful! The visa financial requirements are very onerous - I was very surprised that they ask for so much. Portugal's 'right to buy' is a great idea - more countries could do with a similar requirement

Hello.what a great video. It will help a lot if people!we are already well on the way to move over to Portugal. We bought our land at the beginning of this month. We are totally in love with the place and can't wait for the move, hopefully in a couple of months. I was wondering if you could share your knowledge..our land now has an urban article (it was done pre-purchase) and the habitation license exemption certificate 🎉 the building is small, just under 30m2. Do you know if we will need a project to do a new roof and additional windows or is it a case of a permit/onforming the camara?also if we wanted to extend and do a fully blown project, is it possible for the new house to be off grid? We were told that we would need a septic tank and a bore hole. But solar power is okay andwe don't have to have mains electricity. Do you know if that's right?

@@FrankieOffGrid here in Australia we have to pay rates if we own land . The money goes to the Council which area you reside in and that why I was asking you if it is the same thing there . For our rate money the council collects we get our garbage collected once a week and we pay for water in our rates also and the rest of the money goes into infrastructure in the shire .

I'm currently in the process of buying an off grid property in the Castelo Branco region (I'm in the promisory contract stage), It's on a rural article but a request to change to urban habitation has been made. The renovations I'll want to do are all internal, would I need an architect for that? As per the advice you have given, I have seen the property I'm buying and have my NIF, I don't yet have a Portuguese bank account, but I'm using Starling Bank which is also very good. Thank you Iwan for the advice and contact details of the lawyer when we were emailing in November.

Hello we moved to Crete Greece 18 years ago to retire, and so very happy we made this choice, it used to be easy and we did not have to have a certain sum of money \. But now with non EU countries all are required to have alarge amout of cash transfured to greek bank to beable to purchase land to live here exception is 500,ooo euro for a golden ticket. if not EU you will aslo need private health insurence..so sad this has all changed.

I think when you say embrace the culture there, it's important that people learn Portuguese since ultimately the language is the culture. Language acquisition takes a minimum of at least an hour a day or more. I know that in some areas the Portuguese government offers free Portuguese lessons. Unfortunately, on-line sources such as well as Rosetta Stone, Babel, Duo-lingo help with the most rudimentary pieces of the language, but leave out a large swatch of language learning. I know that the general mode is that people tend to have more communication with their fellow countrymen. Beyond the general daily living requirements, this is something that might be left out of the equation, but it's so very important. Be forewarned that you cannot just go there and expect that people will speak your native language. They won't and you'd be a poor guest there besides.

It appears that they never left their home base. It give a really skewed notion that learning Portuguese isn't touched upon.

If you click the CC button on video it shows the words they are speaking to read. You can also hit the more button on their description and then click transcript, which you can read every word there also by simply scrolling down.😊

I had my DNA analyzed by my Heritage and it came back 67% England/Whales 30% Ireland/ Scotland and 3% Norway. It showed a quite large migration of Paytons from England to America around 1700. I’m interested to know if you may know any Paytons or Osborne’s.

Old Norse name, often found in Northern England and Mid Wales. My aunties husband on my mother's side came from the Plymouth area in Devon. Where the first ships to America sailed frim. He was from a long line of Merchant seamen.

Are you speaking of the Payton surname or the Osborne name? I did a name origin search for the Osborne name and it said it originated with the Vikings.

Osbourne. There are a group around the South Devon area of Plymouth. Most are in the North of UK where the vikings were long established which is why you have other Celtic DNA. I'm from Wales, but we all have some level of Viking DNA in UK.

So for €10k euros we originally bought 2200m2 with the building. But it turned out we didn’t fully own our house so we had to buy out the other owner for an extra €15k so now we have 1.7 acres (for a total of €25k)

We paid 10k until we found out we needed to pay another 15k to own the whole house 😅 but I thought 10k on this thumbnail would be helpful to show that you don’t need loads of money to be able to afford a farm here, as sometimes it is still possible to find something that cheap!
