This vlog is a great reality check for romantic dreamers like me! Sopping wet, heavy and frozen ropes, wet and muddy towpaths are definitely not for the faint of heart. Fave moment was Fran shouting, “Have you gone mad?!”

That's actually a myth based off some old army misinformation, it's only when the rest of the body is covered up that 30% of the heat loss is forced out through the head, if they were only wearing shorts, 10% would.

So smart to put the boat somewhere safe if you are going to be away for a couple of weeks - another narrow boater had her boat totally trashed while she was gone - she was in an area with a lot of other boats so she thought it would be ok, but after she left the other boats moored there started to be harassed so they eventually all departed leaving just her boat there and the amount of damage done was heartbreaking. 😢 you can’t put a price on having peace of mind

You made winter look lovely. The fuel boats do a great job, was surprised when talking to some that they can be away from their base for 2 weeks. Nice to see Dexter looking sprightly, and knowing when he wants to stay indoors by the fire. The smell of coffee is one of those smell, a bit like bread, that gets the senses going nicely. Wrap up when you get home from your break, maybe hats would keep you warmer and a buff? Love to you three xxx

I'm enjoying your cold Vlog with coffee. I had a really wonderful visit with Lisa and Glenn for a couple days in California. Dropped them off at the airport yesterday they are on their way to Seattle. They are as wonderful in person as they are on their vlogs. Had 2 nites of below freezing but it only lasts for a few hours and then warms up to the 40/50's Fahrenheit. 😅😂🤣 hey I'm in the US we use miles/pounds/gallons etc. My question is for Paul. Church bells sounding like you’re in Italy. A balaclava might be the go in those temps. Beside being a nice trip with the snow around it was also a very interesting vlog, a true look at life on a narrowboat in winter. Hell you’ve only had Morning Star for a few months and you’re having work done on her though sounding like it’s by choice but …….. It’s very spooky looking in that fog. The snow really is beautiful but it can get so slippery and dangerous. Great vlog. Love to the three of you. 💕

I used to do the whole coffee bean thing in a cafetière I used to get flavoured beans like caramel and then I discovered beanies flavoured instant coffee,love it

I'm cold watching you both. It's been bad in Toronto and moving towards nasty. Up to 70Kph wind gusts reaching lows of -20C by Tuesday night. (On a bright note... much less odors on public transportation to and from work) I find 5 to -2C the worst with the dampness in the air. When we get below -5C it's dryer and more tolerable. Love seeing the three labs and the opening music... well, as you Brits might say, "smashing.'' Stay safe and get over those colds. Appreciate every second all of us get to spend with the three of you.

The opening sequence was quite striking. I felt like I was moving through a beautiful painting, with the fog and the winter scenery and way Paul was framing and editing the shots. So relaxing for us,,,,we live about 50 to 55 miles as the crow flies from the devastation from earthquakes in Japan. We were =are fine, but we felt the force,,,Gentlemen, it was terrifying....Our house shook like a jelly! The shocks just kept coming,,,,never experienced anything like it in my life,,,,my wife too and she is Japanese! You cannot believe how strange it is to feel ground act like water!!! We are ok....a few cracked roads....But the quake just kept coming,,,,and we still get aftershocks and new quakes most days. Gents....it is so scary....but thanks for the video...just seems normal..Thank you

Just a helpful piece of advice, Mittens work better than gloves for keeping your hands warm. Also, if you wrap your tiller with foam on the handle, that would help as well, that way you are not touching the cold metal.

Great vlog. We were on the llangollen in early September but the weather was VERY DIFFERENT. We basically had a heat wave! It is such a beautiful canal! I thought about all the locks you had ahead of you when you came upon Fran and Rich. I wouldn't want to do the staircase at that time... Good luck with the work on the boat and enjoy the sun. I'm with you on the diesel heater. While I love the charm of a multi fuel - it wouldn't be the way I'd go now...

I have been told that because Britain is so damp that what sounds like a mild temperature in Canada is much colder there. However it is still so beautiful. Thank you for this wonderful video. Dexter definitely has the best winter coat of the 3 of you. He is so precious. Stay warm and cheers.

That is true! A "dry" cold is much more tolerable than a humid one, especially if the wind isn't blowing and the sun is shining. It will feel tens of degrees warmer than the thermometer. I walked out to -15C, an hour ago, here beside the Front Range of very dry Colorado, with no wind... it felt remarkably warm in just a fleece jacket over my lightweight clothes! Even Texas is going to get a "deep freeze" (for them) with this system! Their cold will be wetter.

Hi Paul, Anthony and Dexter Dog. Hoping Dexter's fur is keeping him nice and warm. Loving today's opening which was really nice. I'm sure the falling leaves are natural, but I had visions of Anthony stood behind Paul throwing leaves up in the air to get the effect of falling leaves. Your new coffee maching looks really nice. I watched Paul making 2 mugs of coffee, but then there was no Anthony????? That was funny when you both took Dexter for a walk. Anthony had Dexter on a lead, when Dexter decided to have a little run which nearly pulled Anthony over. It was nice to see Dexter full of energy. Do you normally do 2 or 3 Dexter- Walks a day? Anthony said he had child size feet (which made me smile) but there was no puch line from Paul.😃😃😃. It was really nice listening to you both chatting thru most of the Vlog. You looked so cold. I don't blame you for stopping, but at leaset you stopped by friends, Hopefully that evening the wine came out. Hope Anthony found a nearby place to park the van. I always like the way Paul does a checklist with Anthony, to make sure he has everything for collecting the Van. I hope you both have a really nice annual January holiday in the Sunshine. Hey Spoolbox. Dexter never seems to feel the cold bless him. The new machine is great, I do love a coffee. I can’t believe the spurt of energy Dexter had 😂. He usually goes out for 2 walks but then needs to toilet a few times in between now. I do have child feet 😂. Size 3.5 uk. No VAT though 😊 I did manage to retrieve the van and find somewhere to park. I definitely need a checklist 😂. I need my hair cutting every 2 weeks it does grow fast. Hope you have a lovely weekend ❤️

I used to have UK size 3 feet & used to get my shoes from Mothercare shops!🤣🤣 (remember them) As I've got older the arches in my feet has lowered so elongated my feet slightly. I went upto a size 4 years ago & then a size 5 a couple of years ago. Think it will stay at that now. I can still get some shoes from the children's section, but depends on the shop & what style obviously 🙁

Thanks for another entertaining vlog … Winter cruising looks like a lovely but cold experience. Glad you guys are talking about the running costs and getting things sorted. I’m hoping to hear more about all the teething issues being fixed with a purely selfish reason that we ordered our Oakums Narrowboat last year after Crick and we really enjoy hearing about how receptive Liam is to getting everything sorted. We wonder how the other Oakums boats are getting on as you guys are the only Oakums boaters we have seen that Vlog. Hey Ian. We like to be honest and show the good and the bad with the boat. We do love the interior and it definitely makes a perfect live aboard boat. Oakums have been great at trying for a solution and we are quietly confident that the new systems they put on the boat will resolve some of the issues we have had. There is an Oakums owners group on Facebook. You can search for it and ask to join. Hope you love your boat and have many happy times aboard. ❤️

I’m imagining that you could have a small stationary bike on the stern, next to the tiller. Just for you to pedal as a way to keep yourselves warm. It could also eliminate at least one trip to a gym. 🤣🤣 I was thinking about a small treadmill, but that might become too slippery in the cold 🥶. I know that there’s a narrowboat that uses pedal power as it’s means of propulsion - I’m not suggesting that 😳 A small stationary bike would definitely keep you warmer than just standing still. Oh and Anthony needs some electric/heated gloves or even just one heated glove - how amazing would that be 🙂❤ Just some mad pondering. Take care 🙂🐿🌈❤️

Watching you reminded me of the cold when I rode a motorcycle in winter, before I got electrically heated clothing. After plugging in the jacket, to which attached the heated gloves and pants, to which attached the heated socks, I could ride at highway speed in zero deg.f weather and be toasty warm from head to toe. Adds a whole new dimension of pleasure to travels. My heated gear is by Gerbing, and has lasted forever.

Beautiful video as always - the music selection is perfect! We are hitting record breaking cold temps in Calgary this weekend (-39°C 🥶) but still understand what you mean - there is something about a damp cold that seems to penetrate through whatever you are wearing - once I was in Vancouver, it was 7°C and I was freezing, flew to Calgary where it was -17°C and I was warmer! Stay warm! I too love a cup of coffee in the morning! I’m drinking mine watching you make yours and it amazingly satisfying ☕️

I love them, I love Dexter, I love the underlying camaraderie in your relationship. Thanks to both of you, and Dexter, for sharing your lives and experiences with us. I ordered a copy of your King Fisher, Paul, and look forward to probably the badger and the rabbit which I’ve been hoping you would do. I think of Wind in the Willows and Badger, Ratty, and Mole. I love king fishers. I saw a photo once which a photographer had worked very hard to get of the moment the king fisher was about to hit the water and he had lengthened into an arrow. So beautiful! I love when you aim your camera up into the trees against the sky. Well, I won’t run on for hours about what I love. Thanks again for posting them.

It indeed sounds a bit much. Last year I paid 500€ in total to keep my 250m2 house at a constant 22,5°C in Finland. That expenditure was for nuclear electricity (Finland doesn't use gas and fossils are frowned upon). I use electricity to run my geothermal heat pump circulating glycol through a 200m deep well. Heat is stored into a large tank. A heat exchanger then runs heated water through wall radiators and under floors. For wartime emergencies I also have three fireplaces, of which two store heat for a day or two. And naturally a generator, folding solar panels and batteries. Thick all-masonry walls with wool inside, completely wool-filled attic, 40cm thick concrete slab on bottom and between levels, downside are very big windows. At some stage I'll upgrade to four glass layer windows. Nicer for those below -30°C weeks, when my geothermal backup coils might spring to action, and would they use more electricity. Smallest coil 3kW, second 6kW and biggest 12kW. During the last five years the smallest coil has run in total for six hours. No idea what happens at below -50°C, which is very rare. Build green nuclear, friends!

There is a method of doing locks with a heavy bywash that we used on the Shropshire Union, once the lock is ready, the person opening the lock, opens the top ground paddles which means the excess water is flowing through the lock and not from one side. Once the boat is in the lock shut the gates behind the boat and the lock fills straight away.

Great vlog guys. I can see why you guys use so much diesel , everything on your boat is 240v (motor, fridge ,freezer ,stove ,coffee machine and probably lots more. The power has to come from somewhere and with the uk weather in the winter there isn’t much solar so the generator has to run a lot .I visited the boat life show last year and thought Oakums were a bit cheeky hanging there 100% electric sign off the diesel filler cap . You will be fine in the summer months.

Loved this one Kathy. The leaves coming down on a crispy morning looks fab. I love donkeys, they always look so sad. The bike ride was fine, made me get my exercise too 😂. Dexter is really doing well bless him. Oakums are currently doing a strip out of our current system and installing a new one, which we are all confident will sort out the diesel issues. Have you got a separate diesel tank for the diesel heater ?There is a thread on canal world forum about the amount of diesel Reflex stoves use if they are on for 24 hours people are surprised about the fuel consumption We have a solid fuel stoves on our boat (Leisure boat )Coal Logs fire lighters and kindling cost about £7 per day at least if we left it on for 24 hours (we tend to use the central heating in the morning then light the stove about lunch time)you have to take that into account when working out costings

We haven’t David. The Refleks is meant to use about 0.4L/H on its lowest setting, which is what we usually leave it on. We reckon all in, it costs as much to run as the multifuel. It is difficult to calculate the diesel consumption due to it all coming from the same tank but we know for certain that the generator is using loads more than it should. Hey guys. It was crisp. Don’t mind a cruise in the cold when it is dry but it was freezing that day 🥶. They are currently working on the boat so we really hope it gets sorted. Hope you guys have a good year too ❤️

Thanks guys for taking us along on this freezing cold cruise, it's beautiful to watch from here but I think that Fran was right though, lol. Is it a bit of 'swings and roundabouts' in winter on your hybrid boat that you're using more diesel but not using any gas, wood or coal? It really was beautiful Stevie. Fran definitely was right, I think we needed to call it a day. It is a bit swings and roundabouts re the diesel but I guess we were using too much diesel in summer too so something not quite right. I actually quite enjoyed the cycle back for the van. Hi glad you're enjoying the electric drive during winter. What size prop are you going up to we went from a 18 × 8 to a 18 × 14 and so far we love it stopping is easier and we use 20% less electric per mile .

Good to hear from you guys. Good to hear the bigger prop has made a difference. We are not going anywhere near as big as you guys. We currently have a 13” prop. We are going 16 x 15” so hoping to see a difference, especially in stopping. Hope you guys are keeping well ❤️
