This is the best backyard chicken video I've ever seen! The diminutive "Vanna Whites" with their feathered friends are unbeatable.

We got birds from mypetchicken. We were torn between Buff Orpington and Buff Brahma, but the feather-footed Brahma won. Then my wife fell in love with Silkies. We placed an order, but they were substituted with bantam Mottled Cochin's. We also picked up three "Rayons" (Silkies crossed with who knows what). The great news is that my Brahma flock started laying this week!
@Guildbrookfarm

We order from them as well. There are no local breeders around us. Maybe we will start one ;0) Congrats on the Brahma flock!

Just found your channel, great content and very good video quality. We have had chickens for 3 years or so now and have tried many varieties. Rhode Island Reds, Bard Rock, Americauna, golden sex-link, and a few others I can't remember. My wife loves the Rhode Island Reds because they are so friendly and like people, I think I like the Bards for their cold weather hardiness. But variety is more fun anyway then having just all the same. We had 16 at one time and we're getting 12 eggs each day at peak production. We have reduced our numbers now to four just so we could get fewer eggs over the winter. It does become a chore at times and our family was getting tired of eggs.

I picked up a speckled Sussex, buff orpington and Easter Egger. my Sussex is my boldest bird at a week of age she snapps up most any new food opportunity wether feeder crickets, an earthworm in the grass or an unearthed grub. she also isn't skittish about getting picked up. my buff seems the most layed back and my easter egger cries whenever daddy leaves

we are raising egg layers as the husband and i eat tons of eggs. we have two RIRs, tho we are thinking one is a roo, a silver laced wyandotte (these were gotten from a farm with really poor conditions and we lost the two barred rocks and a red a few weeks after getting them), four barred rocks and three americaunas (we ordered these from the local feed shop). my two reds love me to bits, they try every moment to jump and nestle on me. our silver laced is the husband baby girl, she is so very chill. the barred rock and americaunas are still babies but are rambunctious and loving. i named one of the americaunas marshmallow because she is the fluffiest of them all. she loves the snuggles. i don't know if i could ever raise meat birds. after losing half my flock the first few weeks in, i was devastated and almost against getting more girls. glad husband talked me into getting more. i love your birds and your videos!! give them all hugs from the ruby house!!

That is funny to read because my silver laced seems to have attached to Jeremy as well. Which is odd because I am around them more often. Glad you got back into birds!

Never heard of the Dorking when I was looking through chicken breeds. I'll have to look into them. I planned to have a backyard coup in the spring but our deck was unsafe and starting to fall apart and my husband did that project instead. I want to get to being more self sufficient but it'll be a slow transition. Like you're we are more in a neighborhood and I'm working on my husband to move to have more land but house prices have gone up in my area because of the growth going on in our area. So it makes it easy to sell but not to buy a bigger chunk of land. :( It was hard trying to find the place we're in now with as much/little land that we have. I just found your channel about a week or so ago and I'm loving it. I'm looking forward to watching your journey unfold. :)
@Guildbrookfarm
@Guildbrookfarm 7 лет назад
That is the exact same problem we have right now. We are also limited in our radius. But there is a lot you can do right there without moving. Trust me it's best to take it somewhat slow. There is a lot to learn! Good luck!
@SailorsMrs86
@SailorsMrs86 7 лет назад
Yep, I figure I'll just be working on all the skill sets that I can so I hopefully won't be too overwhelmed if/when the time comes. I started canning this year and exceeded my goals in that. Still haven't pressure canned but that's my goal for 2017. :D I'm constantly tying different things in the garden and we planted 5 fruit trees, 3 blueberry bushes and two different kinds of raspberries. My boys love picking berries and eating them at our house. It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside when they do. Thanks and good luck to you guys too! :D

Another great video and your girls are adorable! I’m hoping to get started next year so I am researching. I was thinking of having 6-8 birds and culling out two or three per year. I was looking at a mix of black australorps, buff Orpingtons, and barred rocks. I believe they are considered purpose birds what has your experience been with those breeds?

I go for pets and colorful eggs too. I want to interact with my critters...all of them. Now we have not raised any animal for meat. What I prefer to do is go hafsies with a fellow homesteader for beef pork and chicken. It just works better for me. I cannot eat an animal if I have looked into their eyes. It is a spiritual thing for me. Anyway I love your choice of birds!

Noble Homestead, I've also lost two of my chickens recently, it is hard. One hen got caught under the coop door, the other was egg bound. I tried to save her, but she did not make it. My hens are 2 1/2 years old. It's been fun, I'm very attached, but I'm not liking this business of them dying 😢

If you got your Dorkings from a hatchery, most people end up disappointed in their "dual-purpose-ness" if they're from a hatchery. Many people get heritage Dorkings from hatcheries and end up replacing them with birds from breeders.
@Guildbrookfarm
@Guildbrookfarm 7 лет назад
I heard that too. Unfortunately, there is no one local that I know of that breeds them. There is a heritage place that ships them, but it is in lots of 25+ and there is a year waiting list. We have to make do for now. Thanks for commenting and pointing that out

We had 107 degree temps and had to cool her down by bringing her in the house and misting all the hens with water. She didn't like either and associates our hand with water and removal from her flock. She comes up to us and isn't aggressive, but doesn't like being held.

Our black Australorpes have been the most docile and submissive birds. The Buff Orpingtons are great egg layers but tend to be a little bossy with the others. The Bared Rocks (salt and pepper) are a bit stand offish and not aggressive at all. Whether they are pets or future meals has been debated in our household with the intensity of a Clinton Trump debate.
