You need to know the truth about where our donated clothes actually go, the exploitation of Ghana caused by our fashion waste, and the 100 million tons of oil used every year to produce 100 million tons of textile waste that's trashed, landfilled and burned, every year. Timestamps & resources:

people also need to stop making merch and shirts... we don't need a shirt for everything. we already have enough!! the pandemic really changed how i shopped and honestly i haven't bought anything off of sites and i've pretty much been buying everything off poshmark and therealreal haha

the issue is people have gotten used to buying things for cheap rather than buying something as an investment, and because of the commercialization of many things we have stopped making our own clothes or repairing what we have. When I sew or buy clothes I only buy cotton, never polyester because it's uncomfortable to wear anyways
@inspiroue

I so agree,I think we are all at one point buy fast fashion. I buy from charity shops and I do donate. But in future I will try not to. In the past I have also given my old clothes to a friend who sends it to Africa for the needy , perhaps that’s a way forward.

Completely agree! I prefer investment pieces that will last me for years, rather than ratty and cheap fast fashion. People want to consume consume consume and they don't want to have pieces that last through seasons. I don't think classic fashion (which I prefer) is considered fashionable. That's sad.

Another big part of fashion waste is how much water is used within the fast fashion industry, it is astonishing and just as big of a deal as the oil used.

Yes! Sadly organicly grown Cotton needs more water than non-organic, so it's still not sustainable, even though it's natural.

Yes, have garage sales. Take clothes and donate to churches where they give them away for free. Or host a free garage sale for clothes. I've recently blogged about this, but those clothes go to the wastelands. I know a few people who work at donation centers like Goodwill etc. and it gets thrown away. Especially if they don't have room for it. Go to shelters where women and children and men are and see who needs clothing. I've worked with women who were in shelters with their children in the past and who literally have nothing.

I feel so bad for jumping into minimalism back in 2015 and dumping all of my clothes to the goodwill or whatever 😬 I haven’t done that for years after watching the True Cost. I still own some shirts that I bought 10+ years ago and only buy when there are holes or my clothes are seriously worn down & I just buy a lot of basic style things that will last me years.

Another problem with fast fashion is that the low quality of the clothing forces you to buy more even if you don't want to and so soon after your initial purchase. I hate going shopping for new clothes, I've had pieces I've worn for 10/15 years. But they don't make clothes like that anymore. Most of the clothes I found in the last decade would break after a few washing cycles. Holes would appear in the most obvious places. Because the fabric is so thin I couldn't even repair them with stitching because the material would rip. It's been a real struggle to find sustainable clothing because I don't live in the US and all our imports are fast-fashion big brands. Finding natural fiber clothing is even harder. But I'm not giving up.

Spring cleaning tips: 1. Don't get attached to clothes that you think you *might* wear one day (you probably won't) 2. Things in great shape that you don't want, try to sell on poshmark/mercari (can reuse shipping stuff or get a couple of poly mailer bags off etsy). I would give it a selling time of 1-2 months. 3. Things in great shape that didn't sell there, try to sell at places like consignment stores (lower payout) or even sending to thredup 4. I share/give lots of clothes I don't wear but would be hard/wrong to sell to friends and family (ex bras, or lingerie, or just let them take the things they would like) 5. Things in good shape can be donated to local mutual aid groups! Lots of them collect clothes (for example coats in maryland for homeless/needy in winter time), a quick search on IG can help you connect with them and see if you have anything they might need! 6. Please do not treat goodwill like a trash bin (giving obviously ruined clothing)- it is not and only contributes to the problem.

However, there aren't that many people from my neighborhood that does garage sales, but instead just "encourage" people to give away their unwanted clothing. I wonder what other methods can we do alone instead of relying on the community or others.

I sew most of my own clothes and I am constantly dealing with the waste of that. I have scraps from cutting, I have toiles that are waste, I have clothing I make that doesn't fit right, or I just don't like. I donate things that make sense which is probably less than 20% of the fabric I am consuming. Even the things I donate I am unsure about and wonder if it just makes more sense for me to rip it apart take off anything reusable like buttons, elastic or cut it up into something else like bias binding because I don't think any of my things actually get reused. I moved from the US where everything just ends up in a landfill, to Korea where I have to spend 30 minutes every week sorting my waste and paying to dispose of my trash by weight/volume. Here I have to 'burn' all my fabric waste, because there is no space in this country for landfills. There is a donate bin for clothing/shoes/blankets in each apartment building, but the way Koreans consume fashion is even worse than the US. Forever21 is owned by Koreans, American fashion looks slow in comparison. As someone who is able to repair my clothing, I actually feel sorry for people that have to rely on stores to shop. I can reuse my patterns over and over again, I can replace worn out linings in my wool coats, I don't ever feel like my body is the thing that needs to change to fit into something. I see photos from the early 1900s and everyone looked so beautiful because all of those clothes were handmade for them. Today everyone looks the same.

I love how meticulous korea and japan are about waste/trash/recycling sorting! In terms of fabric scraps, my friend Bianca (owns bellantoni designs) uses her fabric scraps to make dog bedding for the local shelter and I think that's a great way to reuse cutoffs! x

Although individuals can make some changes with their lifestyle, like shopping more sustainable brands, the bigger picture is that there is no ethical consumption under Imperialism or monopoly capitalism. We need to be holding these industries accountable for producing 100 million tons of clothing. The harsh truth is, despite the availability of sustainable fashion, it isn't affordable most of the time. Our working class folks and the poor will still opt for fast fashion because that is what they can afford.

I’ve seen many RU-vid videos where women brag about donating all their clothes to “help people”! Really, they are doing it so that they can go and buy new clothes, often because they have gained too much weight, or just want a style change. Where I live, few places ever accept clothes donations, there is such a glut already. On days when they do, the clothes go directly into a dumpster out back, no one even goes through them. Don’t kid yourself, anyone, donating clothes just makes the problem worse. Give things away to someone who wants them, or recycle them. Don’t buy any more synthetic fibers, either.

Started doing some research in the hopes of finding a better alternative to Lululemon for black leggings. I discovered that Athleta is a certified B corp, but they are owned by Gap Inc. to my knowledge, the other companies owned by Gap Inc. are not B corps. What are your thoughts on this?

Please talk about makeup! Over use of makeup, layers and layers of foundation mascara and then the effort it takes to take it off. But more and more products. That creates tremendous waste

thank you!! appreciate your kind words and support so much! and yup that's one of the first excuses/"arguments" people bring up when they don't truly understand the system and how to help change it -- would watch through my literacy videos because it's not an easy question to explain in one sentence! But really, who are they giving back to? Most of it is dumped anyway haha x

I'm nearing the end of growing in height so I'm holding out buying anything new until I've completely stopped because I don't want to buy something and end up not being able to fit in it, I'm hoping that I can learn how to make my own clothing with knitting and sewing with natural fibres for the most part since I'm quite crafty so I hope that goes to plan :)

🪔Solution: Wear Indian beautiful #cotton #Saree, #fashionable #classy single long piece of cloth for #Sustainability for as long as it does not get torn, even if it gets torn it can be reused. Knowledge of original native ancient indian civilisation passed on by ancestors of India. I am from India. Taking a bow 🇮🇳🙏😇

this why i can't buy pangaia anymore. theyre clothes aren't preshrunk and the inseam is already on the short end, and you cant stretch it back to the original size because it just wont work. like i would want to replace all my current loungewear with them if they actually would fit even after ending up in the dryer (which is how i have to dry my other clothes anyway so its not like its using excess energy). like it just makes so much waste to sell clothes that are so high maintenance, now what do i do? you cant donate or throw it away? im not cutting hundred dollar sweatpants into rags...
@inspiroue
@inspiroue 3 года назад
looool omg did you watch my latest loungewear faves video where I updated about my pangaia set cause the dyes/colouring looks fucked (even with my careful handwashing/airdrying) - there goes my $400. Not to mention the silent, problematic af founder 🙃

@@inspiroue yeah im like if u cant even dry them without them either shrinking to a childs size or get sun bleached then why tf spend this much money??? im thinking of getting the mate the label ones instead that brand is really easy to make returns to and stuff so hopefully it works out

@inspiroue

Would do my research on apps, founders, what they do with their money etc but I view all apps pretty much the same (they help circulate clothing etc). Whole other layer about the gentrification + people going into low income area thrift shops and selling on apps for like 5-10x mark up and I have an issue with that

super informative! Just a thought- do you think that maybe advocating for tax write-offs for recycling clothes might be useful? Because I think another reason people donate clothes in such massive quantities is for the tax benefits (at least in the US idk about other places)
@inspiroue
@inspiroue 3 года назад
thank you! And yeah there’s definitely something there! I heard from a speaker at an event I moderated about how Canada makes it cheaper for brands to landfill clothes vs properly recycle them? Some legislation I don’t remember specifically.. so there’s some shady shit happening too I need to look into it! I think governments holding brands accountable to legit textile recycling onshore would help (like why are brands allowed to burn and shred and dump their unsold clothes?)
@BubblyViolin11

Look into your local shelters! My local battered women's shelter gives you a tax write off on your donations.
@csk1452

@@BubblyViolin11 love this idea! personally my local women's shelter is super picky/will only take "current" clothing (at least for professional-wear), idk if that's a thing at other shelters (personally I am less concerned about the tax benefits but I just wanted to possibly start a conversation about it and see other folks' thoughts because I know it's relevant for many people)

Our population here is too big and diverse to be 100% cotton and natural resources. We would no longer have trees and clean forests and national parks. It will take a lot of time and many years to get to a point of completely eco-friendly. Let's not forget technology and trade as being a form of pollution.
@inspiroue
@inspiroue 3 года назад
I think the more important part to emphasize is we don't need more clothes, so we don't really need that many natural resources for how much we should, in reality, be producing/consuming
