There’s a reason we didn’t test Track Mode. Tesla wouldn’t let us! It blocks Track Mode on Tesla press demo vehicles. We can’t evaluate something we can’t test. A shame, as it might be concealing a lot more fun for keen drivers. I’ve given you my straight opinion on everything we could, and did, test ourselves. -Tom
Appreciate the unavailability of track mode with the demo, though for example comparing the previous model 3 performance with track mode enabled (if you've had the pleasure), would have given you the opportunity to compare and make some informed commentary. Unfortuantely without the context, the latter part of the review comes across as a little incomplete / ill-informed, with comments on the soul and character of a high performance vehicle, without having tested the most performance oriented modes. The rest of the review was great, but like others commenting, I was here to see a bit more, which unfortuantely wasn't possible with track mode unavailable for your demo vehicle. Looking forward to your next M3P review with track mode (when Tesla release the chains)! 🔥
Why didn't you use the track mode? Its not just for the track only. You can make it way more playful, and without turning off the controls, it even has a minimum esc mode. It should be called "spirited driving mode" The chassis is very rear biased and lots of fun
@@mikaelvellmun7228 hardly any difference, In any case he specifically said he cares less about straight line speed, and wants some spice in the turns. You can have as much spice as you choose
I need to ask, as you were adamant in saying the M3P isn’t as fun, loose and enjoyable as things like a Mazda, Porsche and BMW, did you bother to put it in Track Mode? Because from my experience, Track Mode with traction reduced is exactly how you get the next level of fun, looseness and enjoyment as those other cars.
After driving my new M3P for two weeks, my 12 yr old Mercedes SUV feels so bouncy and imprecise. Oh and the giant steering wheel in my Mercedes feels like something a circus clown would want to steer.
My 2024 Model 3 doesnt have a single rattle/squeak after 2k miles and multiple camping trips and thats typically the exepreience people have with these cars.
A certain German reviewer said, "Don't waste your money on a Taycan." Jason Camisa said, "The M3 has been dethroned." Apparently, the "subjective" will come into play on the two. Quite amazing. Not just because price
Jason also made a key point on one of the podcasts that modern M3s are astoundingly capable, but they’re just as numb and synthetic these days as EVs. At that point, you might as well skip the fake engine noise and oil changes, and get the Model 3 Performance.
Put the toggle on for auto shift out of park beta ( it is not on by default) it works like 99 percent of time and I appreciate it as I hardly ever have to select gears unless I'm doing a 3 point turn or reversing but still pretty handy
Makes me laugh talking about M3 fishtail, put it in track mode and put 100 percent power rear, turn off regen and ESC and you have a fishtail BMW M3 killer for less then half the price. Safer and a better sound system and it can drive its self, and all without burning a drop of fuel and without any service intervals.
M3 killer until you get to a corner. And what power do you use to power your car? Maybe not a drop of fuel but plenty of coal was burnt.... Oh and build quality and rattle city. And let's not talk about the insane depreciation and Tesla playing silly buggers with pricing.
@@dimsoneillthose myths have been busted time and time again. This new M3P will dust the BMW M3 off the line and around the track. Plenty of people charge their cars off solar during the day or by other renewal methods. Give it a few more years and even more coal power plants will be shut down. He mentioned one little rattle, yet every other reviewer has said it was impeccable. You do know literally every car depreciates drastically the second it’s driven out of the dealership? Try again champ
@@dimsoneill You're working off of old info. I'm not sure what country you are in, but here in the US coal makes up only 15% of our grid, and that number is falling every year. When it comes to new generation capacity being built year by year, it is (very)overwhelmingly made up of renewables.
the pricing in and of itself is absolutely astonishing, add to that a performance sedan with magnetically adjustable suspension... this is 2024 performance at 2016 pricing. When did the A45S or RS3 cost 85k drive away? Ludacris lol
Apparently they are electrically adjustable, and the amount of damping is controlled by the car’s software, so theoretically they could provide more control/options over the damping in the future.
And with Telsa playing silly buggars with pricing, you can have 2016 pricing in 2024! Who needs sever deprecation when Tesla drops 20K of the price in a few months.
@@dimsoneill yeah, i dont think we can blame tesla for that. It is their response to the chinese market flooding the world with their cheap knock offs and the hordes eat it up. 'supprt the CCP' if its cheap! Fisker just filed for bankruptcy. I can see some large german manufacturers close doors if people do not have an ideological safeguard against supporting chinese influx. Tesla has to, otherwise no one will buy it when you can have a 450HP chinese car for $59k drive away
I'm amazed at reviewer comments that say the car doesn't have the same driver feel and inputs the European cars have, yet they never show using the Track option utilizing the fully customizable steering, suspension, and braking settings.
Yup, they all do that... it makes no sense, track mode is all they are asking for. Yet they are afraid to turn it on because it will ruin all other cars for them. 0 reviewers in Denmark have tried track mode and they all try to avoid talking about track mode for some reason.
It gets pretty hot here in New Zealand in the summer and I have zero issues with the glass roof. I love the feeling of spaciousness it engenders in the cabin, as well as how the cabin is bathed with natural light during the day. I also love looking through it when parked. It's a gorgeous thing.
When you compare chasing cars vs the Canadian independent reviewers, they are more clinical or politically correct to avoid companies not giving press cars. I don't expect MKBHD level of dissing but they have not been critical like they really want to say.
Tried this today with a friend. I’m waiting for one and he’s thinking about trading in his older 3P. We both drive electric go-karts and came from fossil fuel cars-he had tuned Audis and I had tuned Volvos. Back in 2017, I bought my first EV, a Model X. It felt too big, so I swapped it for a 3P in 2019. Loved the 3P, but the old model was too noisy. After 80,500 fun kilometers and 4.5 years, I sold the 3P and got a 2023 Berlin YP. While the YP is practical, I missed the feeling of sitting low. Now, I have to get this refreshed 3P Highland. We discussed the car and were both surprised at how naturally we used the blinkers. The low noise level and the quality of the adaptive dampers were impressive. The Hardware 4 cameras and seats were also great. The styling looks "smart," and it’s clearly designed for better aerodynamics. On brick roads, driving in sport mode and upping the speed gave a more "planted" feel than driving slower. Acceleration felt slightly more oversteered than the older 3P, but it was still very easy to control. The steering wheel feels easy to turn even in sport mode. If you want a more "lively" 3P, fitting square wheels/tires will yield more oversteer and even quicker acceleration times. But the staggered wheels offer a safety net for regular people coming to an EV with supercar acceleration. We saw no issues with our test car, it also had no noises on the inside.
Good review overall, but I find the criticism of the car being too competent to be odd. It's almost as though the presenter would prefer that the car be less competent. Of course, the fact that this car allows one to tune in just about any amount of oversteer would seem to address this concern, but the reviewer goes on to say that would be inappropriate for the road. So, which is it? It seems that the reviewer is looking for a reason to find fault, and the only thing he can find is that the car is too competent....but then not really.
The criticisms were mean spirited and really reaching. How many times did he say he didn’t try track mode while constantly saying vastly more expensive and slower track cars were better. Not questioning why autopilot, the best in the world, didn’t work on the press car while saying he didn’t like that type of stuff on screen, he just wanted a bigger map.
I've been trying really hard to decide between the long range and the performance, binging hours worth of videos and I have to say yours is the best review I've watched (maybe slightly biased as an Aussie myself though). Thanks for this! The extra cash and less range is a tough trade off vs the long range...I'm still quite torn honestly. EDIT: I had a rattle in my dashboard on my old model 3, service center can fix that up. The point remains that it should not have been delivered with that, but at least it's fixable under warranty.
I have a 2019 Model 3P and in retrospect would have been happy with the LR. As the presenter said you do get a bit tired of the party trick acceleration. Its really useful when merging but seldom needed and the LR is quick enough.
For rattles, check you haven't got anything kicking around in the car door pockets and glovebox, etc. Ive got the 2021 car and often find rattles which i think are coming from fans and vents are actually just an empty water bottle or something like that.
For the money, the question I have is, what alternatives provide more connection but also provide a similar breadth of talent? I can’t think of anything that comes close, genuinely curious if there is anything out there?
Took one for a spin a few weeks back and was quite impressed by the package. Certainly hauls with 5 in the car that very few vehicles can compete with. Much better looking than old fishy fish model 3.
With the new " Spring " update and if a person has an iphone 12 or newer we can now just walk up to the back of the trunk and after 3 beeps the trunk will open automatically it's a game changer. Same with taking off seatbelt to go into park it's so easy yet it makes my drive more enjoyable
You game is very easily changed mate. I have a key, and it can open the boot from 20 meters away. GAME CHANGER!!!! Citizens of Elonstan are a bit special.
@@dimsoneill Actually I can open my boot, bonnet, windows from another hemisphere! lol Oh and give permission for someone else to drive the car too! I can also talk to someone trying to get in the car. Game changer!
@@dimsoneill 🤔🤔 yes but you can't put your stuff in your boot from 20 feet away unless you want to play basketball with your stuff 🤣🤣 checkmate , balls in your Court 😎
Regarding the glass roof, I bought a foldable sunshade for the front and rear glass panels, put them in using the provided clips in spring/summer, take them out once the hot weather is gone. They block heat quite well, problem solved. You can even get retractable blinds now.
I currently drive a BMW i4 M50, and altough I really like the car, I can't justify the cost anymore. I was looking at a base Taycan but prices are just insane if you compare it to a Tesla M3P. I'm not a big fan of electrical cars, but in my opinion, if you need one, buy a Tesla ... And that's probably what I will do soon. Oh and if you want a real fun car, buy a petrol car. ;)
I have a 2019 Tesla Model 3 Performance with MountainPass Performance coilovers and 20” zero g wheels on Pirelli Pzeros. I was wondering if it was worth upgrading to the new Performance Model 3. I also have a modified BMW M3 with a manual transmission. The BMW is more fun to drive, but the Tesla is a better daily driver with gobs of power. The Tesla is also cheaper to own and operate. My wife has a Model Y Performance that we picked up 6 months ago.
I’m swapping my ‘18 c43 AMG for this new MP3 next week as my daily. Planning on sticking with the MP3 for 5 years. How are you finding your MP3 5 years on?
Does anybody know why the european model of the Model 3 performace got a less powerful battery then the US model? Is this just temporary or is the EU model gona get the battery thats in the US model later on? I been watching video of both models when they test the acceleration and the US model is far superior.
Would love car reviewers to enter a destination in maps to show how road tripping works in a Tesla. I understand theyll navigate you from city to city and tell you were to stop and for how long - sometimes just a few of short 10-20 min stops to drive say between Syd-Melb
Yes, it is very easy. Usually Tesla navigation will tell you to charge at ~20% on the next stop, but it is much quicker to find charging at 5-10% instead. Somehow they still have not added that I want to arrive at the destination with say 50% it will always try to arrive with ~20%.
I took delivery of my refreshed M3 LR back in March. I absolutely love this car. It is comfortable, ridiculously fast and the tech and minimalism are amazing. There are no noises , creaks or squeaks 😎👍🏻
It's so silly to make a review and mock it for dullness without even trying trackmode. Performance version review without trying trackmode? Probably he did it on purpose to make it look bad. Maybe it's about money etc. I can't see any other reasonable excuse.
LOL sponsored by Budget Direct but as of today, they’re not insuring the 2024 M3P. Had to go Allianz who were able to insure at $290 pm full comprehensive. Had an opportunity to test drive one a few weeks back after ordering and yeah… RIP anything else sub $200k brand new. Trading in my ‘18 c43 AMG which was my daily work horse end of this month for the MP3. Unfortunately the AMG has become a maintenance nightmare in the last year.
It is very important for a tesla rider to get from 0 to 100 km/h as fast as possible, preferably in 2.5 seconds. because at 100km/h, it's only for the next few hours.
Only disagreement is OP saying that track mode is track only. Plenty people use it in the twisties with stability control only partially lowered. It gets playful while still preventing loss of control. It's really no different than 'sport mode' on other car's traction control.
How to make a GREAT car for practical sporty driving? Take this drive train and put it into a body with no back seat, a smaller trunk, a shorter wheelbase, one large Gigacasting, and a 2-seat sports-coupe body, and it becomes lighter, even quicker, and a great urban commuter car at the same time. No triple PLAID motors needed, no ridiculous rockets, and a lower build cost than this one. Build one for me.
Why do they have to reinvent the wheel so much? Just give us bloody blinker stalks and at least buttons to select gears. No wonder tesla sales are up the shit… that’s not the main reasoning but I think it would be contributing to it.
From all of the reviews I've seen in the states they claim he facelifted model 3 is now 0-100 in 2.9 seconds.. did Aus get a underpowered version of it or something? Cheers
US 2.9sec is for 0-60 mph 0-100 kmh is actually 0-62 mph. Therefore US 0-100 kmh would be about 3.0sec, also China made model gets LG battery which is 50hp less so our M3P is quoted at 3.1sec.
I had a Long Range 2021. Brilliant except it was falling apart after 30,000km. Both lower control arms replaced separately, radiator had a huge leak and the car had to be put on a flat bed truck, driver’s seat clicked back and forth under acceleration and braking, rear seats started to rattle and you could move them horizontally, glass roof made a huge cracking sound twice for no reason as though a branch from a tree had fallen on it. Rattles in the dash. The air con cools your knees but not you face. The auto wipers are hopeless. Rattles are not covered under warranty after a year. It went back 5 times to the repair centre. I loved the car for 5000km then it just fell apart. Never ever buying another $83k car from Tesla. The build quality is awful and you will regret buying it.
112,000 km in a 2029 Model 3 P and no problems at all. Incredible cheap to run and almost as quick as the 2024 model. It is the most reliable car I have owned.

Oh yes, had a minor ding from someone hitting me in the rear bumper. Took 3 months to get fixed because Tesla is awful at getting the parts to the body shop.
Thats unlucky. I had a 2020 M3P and I had not one single complaint or issue about build quality. I went from an Audi SQ5 with an Exclusive Package build, to my M3P and I didn't miss the Audi at all. Now I am driving my 2024 M3P facelift and the build quality is even better. Tesla have really gone up regarding build. I am very happy with this bullet fast, comfortable ride. About 10 years ago I had a BMW M4 and that was a real PITA. I got rid of it after 18 months. Rattles that BMW could never fix and software that was appalling. Duds can happen in all brands.
You must have had all the bad BS luck in the world. I am picking my 4th Tesla next week model 3 performance. No issue with my P85D , Apart from screen dying on me on my model X , no issue with my 2019 model 3 performance which I sold 3 weeks ago. I remember many years ago buying brand new S class and next day had to take it to service. So what it happens.
@@andrewmclean6555 Even if what you claim is true, it is disingenuous to suggest that your experience is typical. I have heard nothing but praise from many other Tesla owners, and my 2018 M3 has been issue free. Have you checked for a black cloud above your head?
Yeah not a fan of the whole electric movement, these in particular look quiet goofy, from the front the roof line looks too high, and still no heads up display c'mon, I'll stick to my daily M2, and weekender the GT, I'm ol school.
They are not for everyone. Some people prefer the tried and tested old tech like ICE cars. Others prefer to be a little edgier and try new things and thrive on change.
Each to their own I guess. When I bought my model 3 I also had a 300+ hp modfied manual Alfa sitting in the drive and the choice every morning of what car to take, in the end I needed to set an alarm in the calendar to remind me to turn over the Alfa and move it a little to avoid flatspotting the tyres.
@@TB-up4xi yep, can definitely agree with that , having 3 cars , and the moded GT sits for 3-4 weeks at a time on the trickle charger, but if you were to drive I can assure you you'd have a smile from ear to ear over the T.
@Tommmmmmmmmmmm LOL! there lot of people instead of using their intelligence, they believe in misinformation they read . When will people realise that unlike other cars, Tesla are made to order only. Sure some will cancel after the cars arrived so there may be few in the docks lying around but not hundreds like mobs like car expert like you to believe.
I have read that the battery chemistry used in the non-US version gives somewhat inferior 0-60 performance. Not a big deal-just pointing it out. I have my US M3P on order and I can’t wait for it.
@@JamesBond-qv2ht maybe a tenth of a second so not material difference. You will enjoy your car. I picked my Ultra Red one up in Dallas just over a week ago and its just great!
I am one of those weird people that tracked their model 3 performance and I'm keen to know if the new one is much improved on track. The main problems I've found were brake fade and body control as well as just a lack of tyre for the weight of the car, causing them to overheat quickly. I hope you'll be able to test it on track sometime!
What tyres are you running? I’ve got a square setup with 255/35/20 Michelin PS4S at each end, eibach lowering springs, and my car handles very well when pushed hard (albeit only on very windy roads, not on track), with understeer only when pushed to the limit, easily counter acted with some throttle application.
I brought a 3 phase charger and used the plugs for race teams at Winton and Phillip island. Was enough to attend all sessions for the day and have enough to get to Euroa chargers. Tbh tyres and brakes went well before charge was an issue
@@raymonddsouza8948 car was stock except for pads and fluid. So 235 ps4s. Cooked the brakes in 2 laps at Winton and tyres went not long after. I can get maybe 3 hot laps a session
I watch a lot of car reviews. This is one of the best reviews I’ve ever seen. Really great explanation of that. And I love how you broke it down in sections and touched on driver connection. That is the most important thing to me and you described it perfectly. I wanted one of these but now I won’t get one because I’ll be bored with it.
Never go solely by what you read on the web. Go test drive one, I did and it isn’t what he described. Plenty car for average enthusiast in Insane mode, if you want more connection, put it in Track mode and enjoy.
I drove the base model RWD and that also had a rattle in tha rear left door. As i understand it the issue of rattles in Tesla vehicles has persisted for years. Is it so difficult to fix this annoying problem ?. Other than that the car was great to drive. Thanks for the review Tom
Insurance companies are going to love the number of bingles from people reversing instead of going forward and visa versa. How do you move it if that screen craps out as well?
My screen glitched out once - turned out the 12v battery was failing but the car kept driving fine and the screen rebooted and came back after a few seconds. You can even manually reset the computer whilst driving by pressing in and holding the 2 steering wheel buttons (again screen will go blank for a few seconds) but it doesn’t affect the car or driving it at all apart from not seeing your speed for a few seconds.
Also, the latest model 3’s without storks - if you select say reverse by accident instead of forward and there’s a wall or person in the way the car will automatically stop. You can set it up to automatically select the most appropriate gear as again if there’s a wall behind you the car knows so you put your foot on brake and car will put it into D.
Test driven both. And here are my thoughts For Tesla Better driving range.. Refined drive, and autopilot is better in general Much better software and support in general. Better speaker system. Faster charging system (11kw and 250kw) along with better infrastructure More storage\luggage space Rear screen in back for kids to entertain them Heated seats for back row Very fast car is your into it.. No yearly service costs like BYD For BYD Better build, and good seats About 19k cheap Android auto and Apple carplay support.
I don't mind the indicators on the steering wheel but the gear changer is probably one step too far, it's change for the sake of change not for convenience or safety, most reviewers have said it's had difficulty choosing the right direction as some stage during the test, wonder how you would go explaining to your insurance company when you run into something because it didn;t go into the right direction, the full glass roof is surely to be a pain in summer, looks great from the rear seats but no shade protection, this is a must in hot climate countries.
How often are you changing gears? In my automatic ICE I put it into drive and off I go. Same in the Tesla. Just use screen instead of moving a lever. When I need to reverse into a parking space, I use them again. Same in Tesla. It takes 1-2 seconds at most. After one drive you wont even think about it again.
Wrong champ. EV sales are in fact up from last year and now make up over 10% of new cars sold. Those pics of Tesla’s sitting idle are actually boat loads of new models ready for delivery. Don’t believe it? Then why will I be waiting 3 months for a new Tesla to arrive?
It was reported that Tesla had 45,000 cars in excess production at the end of the quarter. Based on last year's annual sales this represents about 9 days inventory. Far below industry average. Legacy automakers are reporting exceeding 90 days inventory on popular models.
