I worked at Marshall’s and they didn’t pay me for half a day of work, then gave my check to a different employee and HR laughed at me because she gave my 5 day check to someone who worked 2 days. The manager sent me texts that absolutely call for a sexual harassment violation, but he claimed he was texting the wrong number. And they claimed to mail my final check to my school, which they didn’t, so I contact HQ and they said because I contacted HQ they could no longer mail my check to me. It wasn’t until I threatened to sue (because I absolutely would not work for free) that they finally claimed that they had my check and I didn’t attempt to pick it up. I no longer shop at any TJX store.

Oh my gosh the working with kids part really hit me in the feels, I was a long term sub for 1st & 2nd grade in 2020 and I remember talking to the kids one day before a long weekend about their plans and if they were excited and one little boy hugged me and said he doesn’t like long weekends bc he likes being at school more than home. When we had to close bc of the panini all I could think about was him 😔

1:06:21 thank you for this. I am a dance teacher and I love my students so much. The greatest gift in my career is getting to make lasting bonds with my students for many years and watching them grow up is such a blessing in my life. I think it’s so valuable for children to have trusting and caring adults in their lives who aren’t “obligated” to love them in the same way a parent is, but who is still sincerely invested in their well-being.

I’m finally getting to watch this episode now that I have a day off 😅 I’m a store manager, and hearing how horribly Paloma was treated when she was working retail really breaks my heart 😢 (and all the other submissions). I would NEVER treat my staff like that, regardless of the coverage we have (because if I don’t have the staff to cover a shift that’s on me not the associate who needs a day off). I know for a lot of my staff this job is a stepping stone, and I’m here to run my store as my job but for them as individuals I care about everyone they’re human beings with lives!! My favorite part of my job is seeing my staff grow as people, learn skills, graduate etc and as much as it sucks when they quit or leave I know it’s so they can go on and do bigger and better things, it makes me so proud 😊

Love you girls so much!! My work horror story was when I worked at McDonalds. My sister and I happen to work at the same location, different shifts, but sometimes they overlapped. I was around 15/16 so still pretty young, and she's a year older than me but has autism, so she sometimes seems younger than me. I had been thinking about quitting for a while because they were not accommodating to my medical issues at all. What pushed me over the edge was when the manager decided to yell at my sister in front of all the costumers and workers (I can't remember why, but I do remember it being something dumb.) That night, she cried to our mom. The boss wouldn't do anything to that manager, so I wrote up my two week notice (though I should mention I had a surgery scheduled for the next week, so it was more of a 2 day notice.) My sister ended up working there for another few weeks, but ended up quitting too.

permanent records are kept in the beureaucratic building (usually main office) of the school of a student. They start when you're enrolled in school and end when you graduate. The only thing that really goes on there are serious notes about behavior (suspensions, expulsions) and anything to do with your health/individualized education plan. They get passed from school to school when you transfer. Any teacher in the school can access them usually. Most schools have a sheet to "sign out" a permanent record any time it is viewed so they can track who's looking at it. (I'm a teacher and the only time I've pulled them is to create education plans/see if a student is being processed for an education plan)

Hi girls, I love your podcast so much. I am a bit older than all of you (still 20 at heart), but the topics you pick are so relatable. I had this job once where I worked for a woman and she put all her staff on monthly contracts and if you didn't perform well according to her standard she would just let you go, which was illegal at the time, cause if you worked for more than 6 months I think it was at a company it means there is a position available and she was suppose to give you permanent employment. She would also not employ overweight people as she said they are lazy. Another one was where I worked for a safety equipment company (quite a lucrative company) and they had lots of clients from overseas (I was in South Africa at the time) and I was put in to a Debtors roll where I had to call the clients and obviously ask when they will be able to pay and how much they will be paying - totally hated the job and the boss. He use to scream at me and swear me because there wasn't enough payment coming in and then turned around and said I'm making too many calls and it is costing the company money. He moved me to Reception only to swear and shout at me in front of my colleagues. I was in my early 20s at the time and I resigned after 2 years (don't know how I lasted so long) and he had me going out of there in tears. Because of him I studied HR and I know my rights now and will never ever let anyone speak to me or treat me like that in the workplace again.

I once worked at a retail store (hardware, tools, etc.) with an extremely lenient return policy and someone returned a rusty, snapped in half shovel that we literally didn't even sell. This shovel was years old for sure, they claimed they used it "once or twice" and we checked and the only store that sold it was our direct competitor. Because of our return policy they got an exchange for a shovel we sold that was similar. It was ridiculous.

Former nordstrom employee here, and the return policy is great for customers, not so great for employees. Their pay was (at least 8 years ago) largely commission based, so I had days where I would be in the hole (my last day I had somewhere around $2000 in returns) and often the clothes would come back having been worn.

So I loved this episode I had a work HORROR story as well that I wanted to share. I literally almost died at work once. Before sharing I want to say, I was about 20 when this happened and I now know that I should've taken further action than just quitting but at the time I was so scared because I didn't have a back up job. Sorry this is such a long story. Storytime: I worked for a group home cargiving facility at the time and we had gone out to a park for an outing. At this park there was a festival with alot of bee products and honey which I am highly allergic too but I had never gone into shock over the smell so I thought it was fine. Long story short I started to go into anaphylaxis, I told my lead and his reaction was "use your epi pen and go back to work", I told him "I'm not doing that, I need to go to the ER and you need to find a replacement for me" he wasn't very happy with that and told me if I had used my epi pen he wouldn't let me leave and I have to wait for my replacement to come in so that's what I did. By the time my replacement got there I was fully in shock going in&out of consciousness and my throat was so swollen I couldn't talk at all. My lead came with my replacement to make sure I wasn't lying so I hand wrote a note asking him to drive me to the hospital, he said he "had more important things to do". So I drove myself, apparently I passed out in the little drop off area of the hospital, the emts had to get me out of my car and figure out was going on, I woke up while they were taking my vitals and was able to sign to them that I couldn't breathe and my throat was swollen by the international choking sign. They admitted me immediately and because of the stage of shock that I was in and how much epinephrine it took wanted to keep a 48hr watch on me. While in the hospital my boss reached out to me saying I have 24hrs to give them proof that I was in the hospital for an allergic reaction, so I had my husband drop it off and also in the note said "also this is my 2 weeks notice". I know I shouldn't have even given 2 weeks but I did because like I said I did not have a back up job at the time.

@Maritza Ball I completely agree but at the time I wouldn't have even known how to go about that. Plus my entire life I've been told that suing someone is extremely expensive and being young&college when that happened, I just told myself I couldn't afford to sue them. I am also thankful that I didn't die, now I work in nursing and people are way more serious&understanding.

Employers really do take advantage of young kids working. My first job was waitressing at the restaurant in my small town at 14, I got the worst hours (Monday and Tuesday nights) and had to work by myself and would only bring home $15 most nights. I worked at CVS for 3 years in downtown huntington beach... Not sure you girlies have been down there #surfcity lol. ANYWAY there are some CRAZY people down there especially around 4th of July. I had this guy who idk this dude needed some help. He only spoke about his camera, he always asked me if I liked his camera and then would always show me and state this is my camera. Every time without fail. He would only come in to print his pictures, buy them and leave. But all of a sudden he got an attachment to me, it was getting weird. He started to come more often and would still print pictures, buy them and leave. He was way older than me probably could have been my dads age, I was only around 21 at the time... Anyway, I don't remember exactly what happened before this but he asked to take a picture of me and I just thought ok well if that means he goes away ok whatever sure. So this dude now has a picture of me behind the clerk stand and after that I just got the ICK. So after he left I told my supervisor what happened, we looked at his picture history on the kiosk he had a TON of pictures of just women that either looked like they didn't know their picture was being taken or looked very uncomfortable. So the next time I saw him he said hi this is my camera and whatever. I called my super and told him hey, I'm not comfortable being in here anymore with this dude. So he told me ok well I will call you up when he leaves just stay in the break room. OK cool, I go into the break room and take my 15.... 15 goes by and he hasn't called me back on the intercom. I'm like ok well I guess I can extend it to my lunch, 30 minuets have gone by at this point and I call up to the front to ask my super what is going on. This dude will not leave until he says BYE to me, he was circling around the store trying to find me. So my super asked me and was like I can kick this guy out of the store and he can't come back would you like that? So I said uh yeah I don't wanna deal with this. That was the time I had a stalker at CVS thanks for reading.
