Our First Night in the Airstream!

We spend a lot of time laughing at our own idiocy at times. We knew there would be a learning curve but we really found ourselves lapsing on even basic things at times because our brains were so overloaded with new information! The best you can do is to come at a new situation as prepared as possible and then just throw yourself into a hands-on situation with the right attitude. There is no prize for getting it right on the first try and no sense getting frustrated with yourself when you screw it up. Camping always requires a sense of humor and we are fortunate to have ours in tact. We would like to congratulate those of you who get it right all of the time and would love to hear from you!! (Wink, wink).

Oh my gosh! I was watching the un hitching and looking at the tension on the bars, hoping he would figure it out. I am so glad he wasn't seriously hurt.

It is painful to rewatch! It took 4 weeks to heal but he could still walk on it so we were really thankful.

It took me about 2hrs yesterday to trouble shoot our heater. It didn't match the book that was given to us. So I went to RV Works. Once again, my heater was different. Went outside of the trailer to pick up and try tomorrow. My neck lamp hit a 4"×4" dark rubber patch inside the heater bay. I finally made out, "reset." Annoying, since I had been looking all over in daylight and not seen it. Well, long story short, it went on like a champ. I almost felt guilty for shutting it off. Since we are leaving for Alaska Wednesday, it is a good thing. Enjoy your posts. You keep it real.

Your new camper looks amazing. The youtube channel Keepyourdaydreams has an amazing video on how they organized their Airstream. I actually use some of Trish's tips, especially on soft sided baskets, for some things. I am vertically challenged and have found the use of clear storage bins from the container store for my food. It allows me to reach for items at the back and helps keep my cabinets cleaner. Take care and looking forward to seeing more.

We cringe when we watch too! Whatever mistakes come next - it definitely won’t be that one! We are very committed to only making mistakes that don’t end in the ER going forward. Here’s to hoping!!
@hathawaywego

I nearly died watching Jim try to unhitch. I've always told Dee that it stresses me out when he's unhitching because I worry about those bars swinging out and breaking his leg...but they never do because he lifts the trailer with the truck still attached, to release the pressure and they come off so easy. I'm so glad Jim didn't get hurt! It's my goal to learn to tow the Airstream, I've done it once and it wasn't bad at all, but I worry so much about narrow lanes, etc. Amy you inspire me to get over my fears and learn to tow. The steps will very soon become second nature but gosh they're tricky at first. I use Norwex microfiber for wiping the walls, we have the dark walls but greasy fingerprints still show up.
@lifebetweentheditches1307
@lifebetweentheditches1307 Год назад
So nice of you! We’ve finally mastered the hitch but we still give it about 5 “double checks” before we release it after that mess. That was a “wish we had a rewind button” moment. Poor, Jim. You should definitely start towing!! You absolutely will get the hang of it. Narrow lanes still stress me out the most. I find myself sucking in as if that’s going to accomplish a da*m thing!! 🤣

@@lifebetweentheditches1307 Haha! Well, that's good to know, it makes me feel better about ducking as we go through tunnels. Oh, tunnels I'm sure will be much less stressful for you in an Airstream as opposed to a 5th wheel. As to caravans, we have already signed up for the Ores, Shores, and Lights, (not sure if that's what it's called) but it's in 2024, they fill up fast. But when you find one you want and it's full, just get on the waitlist. Cancellations happen. We were on the wait list for the Intnl Rally and were more than 200 down the list but we made it in. You will love the Airstream community. It's so great! If you don't already know, it's commonplace to flash your lights at other Airstreamers on the road. Just one of the many things I love about the community. Also, there are groups you can go to for lots of great help and tips. Airforums.com is awesome...as well as 'Airstream Addicts' on Facebook. Those are our top two great resources.

Congratulations on your new Airstream! We were "newbies" almost 5 years ago and LOVE our Airstream! We remember the feeling of trying to figure things out with our new Airstream, and glad to have that behind us! But, it is never good to get too comfortable with setting up/breaking down, because that is when bad things can happen! So, I want to highly recommend having a checklist for both set-up and breakdown. We keep ours on our phones, but have seen people that print a list and have it on a lanyard to refer to during the process. You will likely continue to edit/update the lists to your liking. I would also recommend using walkie-talkies our your phones on speaker to communicate when backing into your site and agreeing with terminology (i.e.: driver's side/passenger side) when communicating. (It may save damaging your Airstream in the future.) Levelpro is also helpful and easy to use to level your Airstream. The last suggestion I will make would be to purchase a tire monitor system (Airstream has them), and tire changing kit. Both items saved us from a tire that was very quickly losing pressure on a crowded highway and thankfully we were alerted before we could "feel" the tire going flat and were able to pull off of the highway and then have the tools to change the tire. Good luck and have a great time in your travels!!

You are so right - every oopsy we’ve had in the past 5 years has been when we were “comfortable” or in a hurry. Also and excellent point on agreed terminology! We use, “green” or “red” when spotting to cross traffic because everyone who travels has at least one near miss from confusing “no” with “go”! Thank you so much!!

We have had a fifth wheel for nine years but recently traded for an Airstream Pottery Barn 28 RBT. We left yesterday for our first trip out west and low and behold your video came in our feed. We are feeling like you, newby and confused. I have had so many of the same issues, especially the hitch. We like the Airstream but are missing the room. Thanks for sharing your experience.

It’s been a humbling experience to go from “Pro” to “oh, no!” status overnight but we did finally get the hang of things. And you will too! Hope you give yourselves some laughs along the way. We think there must be something deep in the fibers of RV folks that just enjoys the challenge. Otherwise, we would all just check into an all inclusive resort! Not that we’ve ever considered doing that (😉😉😂)

@@lifebetweentheditches1307 We haven't done too many mods yet since the rig is just turning a year old. Sofar we've removed the mirror out of the bathroom and bought a regular mirror from ikea that's frameless. LOVE that and I don't have to stand on my toes anymore LOL. We got lithium batteries. We plan to add a board in the propane compartment to add more storage. I bought a good amount of soft bins for storage areas and some plastic bins for the fridge to prevent stuff from rolling around. We also plan to add a plug in space for our Starlink. We're also talking about changing out the storage doors under the twin beds and convert them to drawers. What mods are you thinking about doing?
