As someone who moved to Florida 11 years ago. You have made a very wise choice. Small towns in Florida are awesome. People are friendly. You are going to love it. The moss will kill small trees, but the big oaks will be fine. Just thin them out once in awhile so the wind will go thru easily. The trees will give you much needed shade. Congradulation🎉❤

I lived in Naples, FL for 3 decades & only had to evacuate during a hurricane once. At least with hurricanes you know in advance when they are expected to hit. Tornadoes, not so much. Elizabeth, I am so happy you will be in warmer weather during the height of winter. I have advanced pulmonary disease as a result of a rare disease, & I wish every day that I was out of the cold & in FL again where I could breathe easier. Don't worry about the naysayers. There will always be people who look for something to complain or disagree with you about.

Congrats to you both!!!🎉I am a life long resident of Tampa Bay Florida. Let me stress to you how perfect your choice was for an area to live in this state especially for the time you will be here, it will be like a dream for you to live in a nice little small town away from all the chaos of the big city and people are much friendlier in those parts, a lot of life long Floridians like us 🥰live in the small towns.Yes it gets cold but no where near like it is for you guys there! Be prepared though, the grass grows wild in the summer, you will inevitably need to hire a lawn service. It needs cut at least once a week! Much love and luck to you guys!!!❤🙏🥰♥️🙏🥰♥️🙏

My grandparents lived in Connecticut for the summer and bought a mobile home in The Sarasota area in an Amish Community....They were not Amish but fit right in and made some incredible lifelong friends. What a blessing. Happy for the two of you.

Hi, guys! I moved from Virginia to Florida in 1980, and can honestly say that I love it here. I think that once you folks actually live here that you'll find that there are only a couple of months that are unbearable for most people, and it depends on where you live in Florida that determines this. I, too, recently purchased a Florida cottage built in 1950, and have spent the past two years renovating it. I do have a mortgage, but then, I had a mortgage where I lived in Sanford, FL. At least here I have the opportunity to grow much of my own food and raise chickens, and quite honestly, there is hardly any crime here, the property values are lower and it's less expensive to live. My home is fairly close to the Alabama line, so it does get cold here in the winter, but the days are usually warm. Last year the hottest months were June and July, with a slight cool down in August. Y'all might find yourselves spending more time in your Florida home than you think!

Yeah, over the coming years we'll probably end up spending more than 3 months there in the winter. Maybe more like 4 or 5! Oh, and an occasional week in the summer just to "get away," and check the house to make sure it's still there.

We downsized because of the Tiny House prepper channel and now we are homesteading and living simple and free and loving it. We grow our own food and have our own chickens. So very happy for you both. You have been a great influence to me. I am renovating my 42 yr old kitchen I have been saving up for the past 2 years ( maybe more) so that I would not have to take out a loan. Not only will I get new cabinets, but a dish washer ( no I never had one), a built in oven and built in gas top. At the same opportunity I will be changing ( up dating) the kitchen window Thanks for helping me budget my expenses WITHOUT getting into debt

Sold my beautiful home in Arizona In September 2022 so I could work part time. Purchased a home in Maine mortgage free. What a feeling of freedom. Enjoying life being semi retired. It may not be a nice as my previous homes but there’s mortgage. I feel very blessed. Love watching the two of you.

My mother had difficult skin problems on her hands from decades of glove-wearing as a nurse, and I remember gloves did her no good and we had a dishwasher early on. Even though we kids and my father did dishes too, it was too much for her. She also always maintained that it was the healthier way to go, as the dishes got sanitized better. So I completely get your need for a dishwasher. Also, northern Florida is cheaper and a LOT closer to Virginia, south Florida is another 10-14 hours more each way. I think you did very well staying within your comfort zone and are a shining example of how to be happy with what you've got and can afford.

They have a wonderful new life down there! They just went on a small day boat cruise together! I'm so jealous! Lol! You too will find fun things to do in the winter! Hi guys. First of all Welcome to Florida! My family has been here for 6 generations! I live in North Florida closer to the east coast. My house was built in 1948. It's seen many many tropical storms and hurricanes and has never lost even one shingle. Having said that I'm 10 miles from the coast so I think you're very safe where you chose to live. I was dreading the 20 degree temps but we came through it and are now back up in the seventies where we should be. I love the warmth and don't think I'd survive in colder climates. I don't like the cold either. But I hate heat. I can't handle it. That's why we're snowbirds - following reasonable temperatures! Florida in the winter, Virginia is the summer.

I'm so happy for you two! You've come so far since you were freezing to death in that little travel trailer. The best time for you to buy a house is when you want one and you have the money. Trust me, housing in FL is only going to eventually get more valuable. I'm only sorry that you bought one with so many expensive problems. But you'll work it out, you always do. Blessings to you.

I have COPD and cold activated asthma. I literally cannot breathe in the cold air. I'm currently living in the Midwest. And winters scare me to death. I can totally relate to Elizabeth. Being in a warmer climate would eliminate so much of my anxiety. I'm happy for both of you..

Linda and I have both been watching your channel for a long time, and it's very interesting to us to follow your journey. I'm retiring in September, and we're going to be moving. We're anxious to get a little away from the big city, and all the problems that go with it. A lot of the things that are considerations for you apply to us too. As someone who used to live in Orlando, I can say that this is 100% accurate. Some of the RV sites are more than $200 a NIGHT in the high season, especially Key West or Orlando. People just don't understand that. Most of those are booked up years in advance.

Our family has a small place and it has been broken into repeatedly. It's outside a small town in Georgia, an hour from the ocean. We really need to install a serious security system with included remote cameras. My dad bought the property for cash in 1990. Only put in the house things you would not mind losing, and I'm not kidding about that. Finding someone to mow has been difficult and they are supposed to be there once a week but we found they really are there once a month. We do have a few neighbors, but it's not their responsibility; we've learned a lot. Do not leave the water heater or pump on. :) Anyway, I'll be quiet now. Buying a house was a good choice. You might want to hire a property management company to keep an eye on it. We do occasionally lose a tree, that's just life. We have insurance on the property, and it's really not any more of a concern than it would be anywhere else. Don't worry so much about all the stuff people are telling you. Spanish moss is beautiful. The fire ants, not so much. LOL :) ENJOY your new second home.

Wonderful choice on a small town house! Sounds like it was built to last. My father built our house in 1957,he was a brick mason by trade. St. Augustine beach is where we lived south of the pier,the house is still there and have new people now. Lots of great memories growing up in St.Augustine! I didnt move far just to Jacksonville in Neptune beach,where we will live to the end. My brother in law is from Virginia and he cannot stand it down here in the summer,HaHa! You are sooo right about the hoa. One of my shrubs died in a row of shrubs in front of my house so I went and bought one exactly the same and replaced it. The hoa fined me for not getting approval first. I sold the house and never again for me. One hoa was the limit for me!

I applaud your decision. Everyone has different needs and lifestyle, especially as we get older. I choose to own two small homes. There are costs, but not as much as a vacation home. In recent years the increase in real estate prices has made it an excellent investment that I could sell if I need the money. The most important reward for me is watching my grandchildren develop and grow.

I am debt free, it is wonderful. I encourage your snowbird home. I was told the same thing about prices dropping back in 2009... but bought at the bottom. I decided it was really worth the money to me and it has been a blessing. Now I have money to invest again. I lived in South Texas and enjoyed my snowbird neighbors. I bought in an obscure area, prices have gone way up, so it is now a phenomenal investment. I enjoy your thought processes. I am in research mode. What I like about old houses, is history of the area.

Our oldest son lives in St. Petersburg, Florida and he researched before buying. He's retired military. He's very happy there. He was blessed to be there as he was stricken with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia 4 years ago. He was SO blessed to be near Moffitt in Tampa for his treatment and bone marrow transplant. Praise God he has almost reached his 5 year mark where they can say he's in remission. There are great hospitals in Florida. I am sure that you chose a great area with good hospitals near your retirement home. We are so happy for you! The more you talk the more I feel you are near our hometown! We live in Alabama now that's close to Florida line. We love our little country cottage for retirement. We wish you all the best!!🙂 BTW....that cold spell is very rare for Florida. I can tell how excited Elizabeth is about your new adventure!👏❤️

As someone who also has chronic lung issues I can tell you that when you do everything you can to mitigate your health into a positive state the amount of money you save on doctor bills, hospital stays and meds is higher than a change of scenery being a "snowbird". It's expensive to be sick!!

I'm so happy for you! My parents owned a snow bird house in Zephyrhills and they absolutely loved it. They would go down in November and sometimes stayed until April. Sometimes they came home for Christmas and sometimes not. It was the best thing they ever did to get out of Michigan winters. They loved their little winter home in Florida. Theirs had an attached, totally fenced in pool and it was an older double wide that they had renovated.

I look forward to the videos you will share with us from Florida. One thing I'm hoping you will do is install a security system with cameras that you can monitor from your Virginia home. It will become common knowledge eventually that the home is unoccupied the majority of the year and that knowledge can easily be known by someone who will take advantage of that situation and vandalize the place. Get to know the neighbors as well, as they can help keep an eye on things and contact you if need be. And eventually you may become comfortable enough with someone nearby that you can leave a key with and would do a walkthrough occasionally to make sure no pipes have burst, hot water tank hasn't leaked, flush toilets, etc., even if you have to pay them a nominal fee to do so. That's what we did with our vacation home and it worked out beautifully and gave us peace of mind.

I just moved back to Missouri after living in Clearwater for 20 years. We moved because in the last 3 years it has gotten so crowded and everyday we almost got hit while driving two to three times a day. I think you made a smart decision. You are moving to a small town that is not overcrowded and the roads will not be busy. You are right about it being cheaper to own a home versus staying in a hotel or Airbnb. You are making a good investment. Your home will appreciate. Enjoy the warmer weather and don’t look back. People are too critical of your decision. As we get older we need to do the things we dreamed of doing. You can always sell it if you change your mind down the road. Have fun there.

All I can say is encouraging words. Elizabeth, I sincerely pray that Florida's climate will be as effective for you as it's been for me. We started out with six weeks eleven years ago, and then four the next year. By the third year we also realized we needed to buy. We do have a mobile home, and for us it's been the best investment. I love your house, and I'll be keeping my eyes open in hopes that you are moving near me.

Your house has stood for 72 years so it’s seen it’s fair share of hurricanes & stood strong. Great investment. Self insure once you’ve got replacement cost in the bank & save those outrageous annual FLA insurance rates! You can’t take it with you, so enjoy you beautiful cottage. When we were in Southern AL, near Auburn, I planted a round herb bed. In that circle I also planted amaryllis. Those beautiful red flowers came up faithfully every year. No digging out was required. We also planted a magnolia. They drop a lot of leaves, but I loved the flowers. And the humming birds are abundant.

It's not about "How to buy a house." It's about "How to get and stay debt free." We could only buy this house because we have been debt free for years. That allowed us to save the money that everyone else is wasting on their mortgage/rent, their cars, and their credit cards. Everything you've decided with respect to this endeavor makes perfect sense, and if, at the end of the day you decide that this is no longer suitable for you, you'll be able to get your money back at resale. Once you pay your house off, your house insurance will go down.. oak trees withstand hurricane winds.. as long as you keep maintaining it.. which you will.. I absolutely loved the little cold break that we had !! Praying for more..

The tattered flag actually fits the condition our country is in if we are being honest, for at least 20 years or so, but especially I the last couple. It reminds me of the Star Spangled Banner and how it applies to current times. That was actually what I thought of when I saw it, surviving great battles now and ahead. I am proud of our flag and our nation. But they never used to make me cry - until a couple of years ago. Now, every time I hear the Star-Spangled Banner, I fight back the tears - because I fear that it is going away. The freedom-loving country that I knew as a child is already gone!

@@LiveSimpleLiveFree freedom requires constant, vigilant maintenance as the oppressors are always looking for a way in. Power has to be kept in check for it to work. To me our way of life is long gone and our legitimate gov has been systematically replaced by non elected bureaucrats since the world wars. Lifer politicians (which should never be) entrenched in power, constantly pretend to defer to “The experts” don’t ya know. Smh. Sad, but true. The rest of the world system is obviously no better, but we have to be honest about where we are. It’s all part of the world system and there has only been a facade of liberty and justice for all for decades. Recently, even the facade has been coming off as I believe we are coming close to the end and the truth can no longer be hidden. The truth sets us free. As Christians we are called to come out from that system, even as we live in it. God is amazing and all powerful. Humanity is lost and fallen and soon the Lord will put things to right again. Praise His name for He is the one and only true and faithful one.

I can attest to their experiences; they are telling the truth. My husband and I are originally from Ohio but we have lived in Florida for the past seven years. Winter time is NOT the time to get an Air-B and B. We live in the Sarasota area and ABB rents are in the 5-10 thousand dollar a month range for anything that isn't a trailer in a campsite. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but not everyone wants to camp. We are building a home and living in a hotel right now and are paying 900 a week while our closing is delayed. But we are lucky because the monthly rents are so much higher. Florida is full of wealthy people in the winter and space is limited. Getting a house was a very smart thing for this couple to do.
