Our Ford 7.3 Powerstroke Diesel is DEAD | Full-Time Truck Camper Life 

The 99-02 7.3L Powerstroke is literally the toughest engine ever made for a truck. It came from the factory with forged rods and pistons, applications you usually only in 1000HP race cars. On top of that it only puts out about 250 horsepower, so its impossible to blow or be hard on. A literal tank of a truck. You can get a cheap (3-4k) used 99-02 7.3L with super high miles like 400k plus, but dont be scared by this.. check the blowback, these engines can go for 2 million miles or more. and the best part is they are exempt from almost all current diesel emissions requirements, meaning you don't need to run cats or DEF..

My 99 f350 7.3 has 375k miles not a drop of oil on the ground doesn't eat oil and just keeps huming along.

The previous owners were not good it has not been maintained well that ford could do more miles mine had 300000 when I sold it👍

This is why we sold our Diesel Pusher, my Brother-in-law had a $7000 break down on his due to a failed Cummins lift & injection pump on his 24 Valve, that was the last straw for us ( And we had a 12 valve). Pushers are hard to work on and finding people to work on the while on the road is tough, and finding support for a vintage 7.3 is getting tougher also. (My last truck was a 7.3 with 195k) We just went back to a F250 Super Duty 4x4 6.2 gas truck and am going to get a lighter weight trailer. If the truck ever lays down or dies I am better off getting repairs, an engine, or I can just trade if off. While Truck campers are neat looking N all, the cost per square foot is way to high compared to a 20'-25' trailer rigged for rough terrain. I hope it all works out for you.

Sorry to hear of (your) every nomad`s WORST nightmare. As you know, when you buy a used vehicle, there is a REAL good chance you are buying someone`s headache. You took a gamble---& lost this time. I commend you, gal, for your perseverance in tracking-down your replacement engine ! Your EYES told of your ORDEAL...Life`s an adventure--both types. Best of luck & Happy Trails !!

I’m not sure where you all are at, but I own a 2001 F350 with a 7.3. And I’ve never heard of it costing anywhere near that much to rebuild or replace my engine. A quick search has multiple remans for between $3500 and $7500. A reman straight from the Summit Racing site is $6104.99. Plus install might bring you up to the $10,000 mark but I believe you can get it way cheaper than that and I’d never put a salvaged motor in my truck. There is no telling what is wrong with a salvaged motor.

Same thing happened to mine at 105000 miles, cost me $16k to put another engine in it . Never bought another ford, my Cummins currently has 508k miles

I'm sure you were thankful this didn't happen after you were south of the border. I do think the used motor with less miles and 3 year warranty was best choice, good you chose that one. I hope it all works out perfectly for you. I look forward to watching your adventures.
