Sugar beet Harvest it so much fun I drive big truck nowadays every fall I have old customers that call me to drive truck for them I used to be in the egg fertilizing and spraying business and so I have lots of good contacts I live here in Idaho and we work out of the Nampa Idaho area I start out hauling silage corn in September and then finish out hauling sugar beets in November
This sure brought back many memories of the 25 years I spent working the Beet Harvest, I was the operator on a double piler for many years before going to the scale. We had such a great crew and had some good times but it is truly a grind. You are totally wiped out after a shift, Hugs to Lefty and Bear too
I used to work at a place that Dyed cloth, and We worked a Sunday or 2 and they didn't want to pay us double time, so We Didn't do it again. It was also 2 weeks in a row that We worked 7 days a week.
I was 73. Stationed in Hillsboro outside Grand Forks...I worked 12 hour shifts for 25 straight days...I found it ,exhilarating...I never felt tired, I worked midnite to noon...had all day to do errands laundry have a bite, shower, sleep,6hours,go to work...I loved it...made Big money plus a bonus check at Xmas, they even invited me back the next year..Free campground...what's not to love,??
@carolclover1238 we finally got into a good rhythm once Lefty started to heal up and the days were clicking by! At that point we could have done more :)))
I spent a lot of time working jobs like this. Always tons of overtime to hat allows you to make a lot more. Nice to see someone on here who doesn’t mind hard work!
2 suggestions: #1- you would look great in a groomed beard #2 - talk to your vet about some medication to relax Lefty when he has to be left alone in the truck for a while. Sometimes even benadryl, which is safe for dogs, will do the trick.
He's normally ok for an hour or 2 - at first we didn't get breaks for several hours but once we changed to 30 mins every 2 hours, he calmed right down :)
Hello David & Lefty! Thank you for taking us along! Great video! Glad you and Lefty made it through that rough time! Take care and be safe! ❤️🙏🏼👍🏼👍🏼✌🏼❤️🐶🐶❤️
Thanks David for sharing all the info of the sugar beets! I was very curious and was very interesting to learn about the harvest! Glad you made it through the longs days! So glad Lefty is doing much better. Looking forward to more adventures!👍🐶🥔
That was quite a huge undertaking. So happy you and Lefty survived all this. You deserve some R&R and time with your beloved 1:02:25 Lefty. Truly thanks for sharing this journey. The $20 heart was really special and Im sure a labor of love and appreciation from your boss and his thoughtful wife. Happy trails until we meet again. ❤🐾
WOW, very interesting! Thank you for including us! I'm glad both of you are feeling better. You have certainly earned a restful and peaceful winter! Blessings from Arizona!
Really enjoyed the beet harvest videos, took me back to when I drove a 10 wheel spud truck during potato harvest in Washington for several seasons when I was in my mid 20's. What a trip. After following along with the digger to fill your truck you had to remember to remove dried potato vines which wrapped around the driveshaft (think that's what it was called) before heading to the potato cellars or there was a good possibility it would catch fire. You laid boards down the center of the bed over the belt and it was critical to check that the boards were still in place when you pulled up beside the digger because it was a bouncy ride driving thru the field. If those boards were not in place before the digger started filling your truck, the belt wouldn't move to unload the spuds. The result was you had to unload by hand...by yourself! Never happened to me but I witnessed others in that situation. Like you Dave, we worked 12 - 14 hrs a days until harvest was over. I thought it was great fun...but I was young and brainless, my mom didn't they would hire a chick but that was 50 years ago. I loved driving that truck, sometimes pheasant hunters had lousy aim and hit it. Good times. Glad you made it thru and Lefty too, poor thing.
Isn’t it amazing what we do for our dogs. They love us unconditionally so it’s the least we can do but love and care for them. My little man had emergency vet visit Monday and is just now eating today. I was so worried that he was on his way out. He’s got tummy issues so has to only eat lamb and rice kibble. Anything else messes him up soooo bad. That Lefty is an awesome fella. Glad you posted your experience. Much ❤ to you both.
@@TheCampulanceMan I know you were. Man’s best friend and some of us women too. I used to be a cat lady for many years then a little puppy came along and stole my heart. ❤️
Hi David and Lefty. Thank you so much for the update. Such an informative video. Really great of you to take the time to do that videography while also working😅. Really allows us to be there with you. Glad its over for you and you made a few bucks. Congrats on making it all the way even with the unfortunate incident for lefty. Shows dedication, perseverance, responsibility, and STRENGTH. Certainly all quality traits to have. Be safe and well good man.
The Lefty spasmodic episode, which built up to a creciendo just before the part-II of Beet Harvest 2023 was started, was so worth the freight…. Hilarious segue, done The Campulance Man-Style. We thank you
I was telling my elderly Aunt about your video as she lives in Hallock. The one scene where you are walking Lefty and you stopped by an old 3 story house that is red and white and had lots of decorations for fall. My Aunt lives right across the street in an apartment and she said she saw you and Lefty walking and thought that was so cool that you had that on your video.
I feel so bad that you had to go thru being ill yourself, lefty having his injury (and having to be without you while you're out of the campulance) and having to put in so many hours of labor. But, I have to say thanks for all the video of the beet harvest! It was incredibly interesting to see and I learned so much. Just wanted your both to know I appreciate all your effort!!! WOOF! You both deserve some down time...WOOF WOOF!
Wow well done you for getting through all of that work and for getting Lefty through his ordeal. We've had a dog who did the same and we had to wrap it up, so i know it's not easy.
Dang brother, your hard hat is a good testament to your journey. Starts out so fresh with a solid DAVID across the front and is nearly wiped out at the end. Lol
Wow. How interesting. I've heard of the sugar beer harvest, but never knew all it entailed. Kudos on your stamina. Cant say i would have made it to the end. Glad Lefty is better. Thanks for sharing your journey. Safe travels to you both. Take care. 🙂
That’s awesome you stayed til the end. I follow another RU-vidr “simple Enough” and she stayed also. Saw lefty at the campfire gathering on her video. You guys rock
Thanks for sharing your experience. Now that you've got Lefty feeling more comfortable being alone for a while, you should probably keep it up. Find an excuse to leave him for a few hours every day just so he doesn't forget that he can handle it. Then when you have appointments, he won't go nuts.
This is a Great video !!! Loved seeing all about the harvest. I remember seeing another Yter do a video of this and it was freezing cold, icy and they couldn’t work hardly at all. It was a total bust and they didn’t make anywhere near what they should have. Glad you had good weather and were able finish the job. ❤
@@darryldrax606 I don't think so Darryl. It wasn't a good fit for us as we are set up now. It was clunky driving the rig to work and back every day and actually used a lot of diesel to go 11 miles each way. That big engine doesn't even start to get warm by the time we shut it off
Thank you for that journey through the beet harvest! Very interesting. Did you say hi to Fern? Am so glad that Lefty is better and not hurting. Stay safe!🤩
Hello David and Lefty 👋✌️! WOW that was incredible!!!! And I seriously felt exhausted for you both!!! You deserve an award for that!!! Poor Lefty too!!! 🙏🐾. ❤ I was hanging on the edge of my seat through the whole thing!! I do have to say, I love the facial hair and hard working uniform look. 💋. Hope to see you out West here soon!!! Safe travels ✌️.
I wish I could have dogsat Lefty!!!! I've done that type of 'work' before. I still do it on the side. I don't really call it work. And I'm glad that you went on the road, to do RU-vid, so that you could be with him more. Clearly he can't stand you being away too long. That just goes to show how great you are with him and making his life the best it can be. So I could see the exhaustion in your face, like worry. From a professional worrierr, myself, I know that look. I'm glad you guys are back to your schedule. ❣️💪🙏🐾. Loving thoughts coming your way David and Lefty!!! 🇺🇸
Hi Dave, glad you made it to the bitter end of the beet harvest. Yup, I agree, I wouldn't eat those things either. Good to hear Lefty is on the mend and getting back to normal. I noticed a video that said there was major construction going on at the Quartzite camp grounds. Maybe we'll get to see some of it during your stay. Hope you're going to hook up with Jeff and Bear soon. Both of you take care and looking forward to some relaxing vids
I tasted a beet and it was very root tasting - like a raw potato kind of taste. I'll see if I can find the construction you mentioned. I haven't seen it yet but we haven't been on the south side of town yet...
There is apparently a clothing optional area at Quartzsite as well. There are multiple videos on YT regarding the construction and upgrades.@@TheCampulanceMan
David, Very interesting video. Thank you for the good job you did and I'm taking my hat off to you. There is no way I would be able to put in a 12 and a 1/2 hour day let alone that many days in a row. When I was younger yes, I used to work 16-20 hour days working double shifts but those days for me are long gone. Hope to meet you at Quartzite, until then take care and sending blessings to you both. Hopefully Lefty's foot will heal quickly.
I don't think Lefty likes you being away. You not feeling well either, Poor Guys. P.S. I just love Lefty. What a beautiful Dog, and so animated and funny.. I have a Purebred Mutt, who acts the same way, so much fun..
I was wondering the same thing...how long can they store the piles, what do they load them onto (truck or train cars) and how do they load them. Very interesting!
I did a google on the Sugar Beet Harvest... I was reading how they make sugar out of them...its really pretty cool... and how many beets it takes to make a 5 lb bag of sugar... thats cool stuff. Further down south here, I think Sugar Cane is grown for sugar... it all depends on the climate of the area... the article I read says the workers (ie. You and Lefty) could possibly make $3800.00 in two weeks worth of work... I'm sure that would help out with the cost of fuel for yawl.. That was some cool beans.....er... ah.... BEETS. @@TheCampulanceMan
i did a google search on the Beet harvest... it tells all about who and how beets are treated to make sugar... how the tops are cropped off, how they are heated and cooled... all sorts of stuff I never even thought about till watching the Supervisor Lefty and his sidekick David. smilin... they are the Odd Couple. grin... good people...er... ah... Canine and Person.@@jaggjagg5928
lol! i saw that part where you were filming the conveyor belt and you said i have to control the boom movement. but i read it fast and i read; i have to control the bowel movement. you got to be careful out there man!
That's a tough experience! Very glad you and Lefty made it through and stayed safe. So my big question is: what happens with the beets after they are all piled up? Do they have to sit there for a certain amount of time? What is the next step in the process? Surely the have to go somewhere?
A really great video. Very interesting. The work got boring and slow but it was lucrative. You had quite an experience. Last…it is good to know Left has recovered. You mentioned the vet was an older man. That was lucky because he was an experienced vet. Now you can rest up and you have memories. It all worked out.
First , again I’m so sorry about Lefty’s injury and the heartache it caused you. 😢 Thank you for all the info and footage on the sugar beet harvest. I’ve always been curious to see what it actually looks like. On day 9 you looked a tad fatigued. I can totally respect Jeff knowing his limit, that looked grueling to me. I don’t think many people could do it. Kudos to you👍👍. Great video.
Thank you! Walking on the pavement with mud packed in my boots was tough on my back at first till I got broken in - then it was just repeat every day... we got into a routine and that made it easier on us:)
the good money in beet harvest i working for a farmer, I spent 16 years going to harvest for a farmer in the mindak (whapeton) area. good money especially if they let you stay to finish corn or beans. once beet harvest starts its go go go for sure. I have topped, lifted and drove truck for em.
@@workinwithmrwilson Looking at our diesel cost I netted about $3000 roughly. We did make some $ being able to work weekends, even the cleaning days were on the weekend :)
Ugh, so much work! You looked so refreshed at the end of the video after you were able to shower and shave. I have a question for you. What do they do with the huge mountain of sugar beets you helped create? I understand they will probably be used for making sugar but, won't they freeze out there? Will they need another crew to load them up on trucks or box cars for transport?
Do you know how the beets are moved to the processing plants? Is there a concern to having the piles of beets exposed to the weather before they are collected and moved to the processing plant? How long before the piles of beets are moved? Great video seeing the beet harvest from your perspective. Very interesting.
Wow, that was interesting, thank you for sharing this with everyone. I am glad it all turned out well and that Lefty is doing much better! The only thing I ever did on a farm in Wisconsin when we were young is pick a bunch of cucumbers to be used for pickles during our summer vacation at our friends farm. When we picked alot we would take them to a place that paid maybe several dollars a bag at the time. The smaller cucumbers we got paid more for those then the bigger cucumbers. Overall didn't pay very much unless we were fast. I'm close to the same age you are, so maybe back then that pay was alot more then it is today. They also had families live on their farm and the families picked cucumbers in the summer and these families were very fast and made a good amount of money doing it. Great video, you and Lefty take care!
Thankgod lefty is doing better very good job on lefty’s paw can you tell me what they use sugar beets, for I have no idea you can tell me what day is it for here from Ontario Canada ❤️❤️❤️❤️🇨🇦🇨🇦😎 you look so tired in most of your videos I know I couldn’t do it anyway have a great week safe travels
They make powdered and brown sugar from them from what I understand. They're high in sugar content. We were only a handful of miles from Canada up there :)
Hi David. Interesting video. Thanks for sharing the process with us. I am wondering what happens to the beats after this? I keep trying to see a processing plant in your video but I never saw one.
$18.27 an hour in a factory after 6+ years. Started at $11.50. Haven't seen OT since March. Average of 40 hours a week, but compressed work week. 12 hour shifts. Only working 3.5 days a week on average. Driving 64 miles 1.5x times less a week than a 9 to 5. The long weekends is why I stay. Not that I have a reason beyond AGE to need a long weekend.
Congratulations! You made it. I am so glad Lefty is much better.I really enjoyed the video.Safe travels. You look beet! ( beat) lol Get some rest as you count not sheep, but all that hard earned moolah.
