To make room for our Cummins Engines - we had to move our Lithium Battery Bank which is made up of 56 LiPo CALB batteries. CALB stands for Chinese Aviation Lithium Batteries and yes we got them from China and we have had NO issues with them. #lithiumbattery #lithium #solarenergy

If you have any questions or comments about what we are doing - make them. Blaine tries to answer every one of them over coffee in the morning. It's kinda his thing and I personally think he enjoys it! So please keep him happy and make a comment.

We used a fork lift battery to power our off-grid solar system (land-based). I actually don’t remember how big it was, but we ran everything that you could have in a house. In 10 years, the only power outage we had was (literally) a lightbulb went out! Loved the system. But the Camp Fire (better known as the Paradise Fire) destroyed everything. Now we live in another state.

We are so sorry that you lost your house in Camp Fire! That must have sucked. I (Janis) grew up off grid also in Northern Ontario and our battery bank was a bunch of truck batteries. They took up quite a bit of space. I have to say these lithium batteries are pretty skookum! Where are you living now if you don't mind me asking.

I have built several prismatic and pouch cell lithium packs in LiFePO4 and Li-poly flavors. I have NEVER built one without cell clamping. You might get away with it since expansion usually (important word there, usually) occurs near 100% SOC. Since you're charging to 80% then they may (MAY) be just fine. Even then I would say this all only holds true for high quality cells like CALB cells. If I were you I'd plan a project to come up with a simple clamping system. It doesn't take massive forces to do the job properly but it still should be done. Especially if one day you decide you want to charge to 100% because you know a ton of weather is coming and you're low on fuel.

This bank is around 4 years old at this point. It was built with CALB SE series cells. I have my charge settings locked where I do not climb the knee on the high side even if I were to leave it charging for a month it will not reach cell voltages that would induce swelling. I did make a setup for clamping them but never finished it. I figure at this point if they haven't changed in 4 years they are unlikely to. I have done a few other large banks with no clamping as well and have had no swelling issues with any of them. That being said I am VERY conservative on my charge profiles.

I agree with you Blaine, I hate painting, and I'm terrible at it. Funny how I'd rather move a 56 cell battery bank from the engine room than repaint inside one cabinet, but I would. The only thing worse thank painting is revarnishing the teak railings and trim. Regarding the weight distribution, what do you figure your battery bank weighs? My bank made out of 300Ah cells is 5kG/cell and 12 cells, so only 60 kilos, not a big deal. I figure you must be about 3 kilos a cell. Definitely heavier, but only about as heavy as two men. Compared to the weight difference between your Detroit's and the Cummins it's probably a rounding error.

Painting really is the worst. I am lucky to have Janis. She is much better with all of the painting and varnishing stuff. According to battery specs the batteries are 5.6kg/cell so bank should weigh around 700 lbs. Not an inconsiderable amount of weight but it shouldn't be a big deal. The boat has always had a list to port so getting the batteries central will likely help.

Can you make a fire-proof box for these batteries? Also, can the batteries encased with the metal cases be removed and plastic put in place?
@OnboardTangaroa
@OnboardTangaroa 24 дня назад
You could make a fireproof box however I imagine there would be limitations as even if the metal did not melt it would get hot enough to catch things on fire that are nearby. With the metal case batteries the case is integral to the battery so there would be no way to change it for a plastic case (as far as I know). This is all based around if you ever had an issue with LiFePo batteries which is actually a pretty stable Lithium chemistry.

Very interesting information about lithium batteries. Thank you for the video. No idea how you can keep track of what each little wire does in the engine room. Looks like there are hundreds of them and they all look the same.

Glad you enjoyed it. Years of experience is the only reason I can keep track of everything. My ability to identify wiring has been honed to a razors edge over the years 😂.

Hey Blain and Janis! Never put "so you can binge" in your playlist description as that's what I did .... now I am all caught up. Question about your battery bank. I would think you have it wired in series parallel but what is your voltage, 12, 24, 32? And are you running cook top and oven? I am embarking on an engine room refresh on a Carver 500 and am curious about your thought process.... keep up the great videos! Janis I have plenty of painting!😂
@OnboardTangaroa
@OnboardTangaroa 22 дня назад
Lol, sorry we sucked you in! The voltage on the bank is 24v and the amp hours are 1300 so a 31kw/h bank. We run an induction cooktop, oven, watermaker, full size fridge, and a bar fridge off of it with no issues. I also do a lot of welding with it. Good luck with your engine room refresh! Its a good feeling. Our upgrades started off with getting done what we needed to live onboard as quickly as possible. Hence the state of the inverters and such. Those and the battery bank were installed in that temporary location until we cleared the space for them in their permanent location. That will be coming sooner rather than later. Good luck with the painting as well. I hate that stuff! Take care and thanks for watching!

How much heat will come off those batteries? Maybe keep your pilot house warm in the winter ? Or not that warm.

@@OnboardTangaroa oh ya probly a good think. I like how those batteries are tall and skinny like that they fit together nicely. I haven't seen that kind before.

That's how most of the individual cells come. These have ridges on the side but all the new ones are smooth.

I do not know everything to say the least but you should put those batteries on WOOD and not on metal. I spent 4 years on nuclear submarines in the USN in the former USA. Our batteries were as big as trucks and installed by a crane. The batteries sat low in the submarine hull and sat in a special compartment that was atmospherically controlled and was sealed. The batteries sat on TEAK beams inside the compartment which was inside the steel submarine hull. WHY? The energy would leak out of the batteries or drain them when they touch steel or aluminum in your case. Just put wood strips on top of the steel. Hope this helps. Sorry for the extra work but it will save your batteries. Jim in Chile
@OnboardTangaroa
@OnboardTangaroa 7 дней назад
Interesting. I had never really put much thought into that. The battery cases themselves are plastic and I'm not sure if the metal frame even has conductivity to the hull as it is sitting on wood. I may have to look into this a bit. Thanks for the insight Jim!
@ChileExpatFamily
@ChileExpatFamily 7 дней назад
@@OnboardTangaroa Yes I am off grind here in Chile now 11 years. But my time in the Navy taught me things I have never learned elsewhere. So I have a steel rack for my AGM batteries and they too have plastic cases, but I put a 1/2 inch strip of wood on each steel beam. You can also use Styrofoam or RUBBER or such but you want more than just the case for the battery case. Hope it helps . Jim

I haven't seen that come around the pipe yet for Lithium. I guess we will cross that bridge when we get to it. I could see it with lead acid as they off gas hydrogen but there is no off gassing with LiFePo batteries.

It is important to do a first charge per group of 16 batteries with a good quality BMS in order to ensure the balance of charges and check that all the cells are correctly and equally charged. It's Lifepo4 batteries ?
@OnboardTangaroa
@OnboardTangaroa 2 месяца назад
Correct. This bank has been in service for 3 years. They were balanced when they were installed initially. The cells maintained their groupings when I moved them to their new location. Currently the cells are within .001v of each other. I use an Orion BMS2 for the BMS side of things. They are indeed LiFePo 4 cells. Thanks for watching!

This is so dumb, literally no practical point or use for having that many batteries or even a system designed like that.
