My brother and I recently took his linked dual case 1 ton Tacoma on 40 inch pro comps and arb lockers and two stock 3rd gen 4Runners to the snow. You'd be very surprised how much tires make a difference. One of the 4Runners followed nearly faultless all day on cheap 265 chunky mud terrains that were a no name brand from China. These tests at best are very inconclusive and incomplete because I know for a fact the 1st gen Tacoma's came with different rear end gearing with the factory tow package, like my 2000 Tacoma 4x4 has. And let me tell ya, even with a slight upgrade/hill, when you put mine in low-4 and take your foot off the brake, it's moving on. Every time another 1st gen Taco owner drives mine, the first thing they say is: "I love the rear end in this thing". Also: mine has the far superior manual locking front hubs, so BOTH front wheels are under constant power in 4-low or 4-high, regardless of differences in terrain or grades/angle from one side of the truck to the other. That "4 wheel drive on the fly" is only a gimmick that severely limits your 4 wheeling capabilities. Any time you leave the pavement, ya simply hop out and lock the front hubs in. My owner's manual says I can safely drive up to 55 mph with the front hubs locked in. That's plenty of speed for going up iced over paved roads & highways up a steep mountain. I bought my '00 Taco brand new, and not a year goes by where at least 1 first-gen Tacoma owner isn't trying to talk me into swapping my manual locking hubs for their "on the fly". They even offer to do the swap "for free" on my truck. Of course I just look at them and say "Yeah, I bet you would, the answer is NO".

As a light duty off roader, obviously the Tacoma is better, but when you have to haul 3 tons srw or 5 tons DRW in the bed, in off road terrain and with >=35% hills, that's where american full size trucks with their low crawl manual transmission gears shine, those old trucks are tractors.

Man, that little Toyota needs a LSD big time! I put one in my 2WD '98 Ranger, and honestly it should be standard in any pickup truck! For your truck that will likely spend like 75% of the time on the road as a daily driver, I would personally go with a Detroit Truetrac (torque biasing-style) or just a good ol' clutch type LSD. I'd keep lockers for a dedicated offroad rigs.
