Meet Ruby, our 1955 MF TO35 tractor. Part of this video was filmed when the tractor was delivered a few weeks ago, and part of it was filmed during an oil change. Then we talk about factors I had to consider when looking to buy a tractor.
I have a 1955 Freguson TO35. Original paint on these is light gray hood, fenders & wheels. The running gear is dark mettalic green. Mine says manufactured in Detroit. I'm in Canada and I paid $1525.00 at auction in good running condition.
We could talk tractors all day. I'm a huge fan of Harry Ferguson's tractors. There are several stories between him and Henry Ford. Maybe you already heard about how and why Harry Ferguson sued Henry Ford for using the three-point hitch without his permission and won millions of dollars in the lawsuit. Another little story about sales convention or someplace they were doubting Harry Ferguson's tractors and he drove it up a set of stairs to show it off. You may already know that Massey Ferguson was two companies merging together Masseyy Harris of Canada and Ferguson company of Great Britain to make the American tractor company Massey Ferguson. I spend most of my adult life running either farm equipment or construction equipment. I am now retired. I really should call them Ferguson's instead of Massey's
I just got a TO-35 , not sure what year but really looking forward to getting her fired up. It has the front loader and a gannon box on her. Great video & sweet old tractor ! Thumbs up...
I wish we didn't have to sell her to buy a tractor with a loader. Maybe the boss will let me buy another one in a few years. There always seems to be 1 or 2 for sale around here.
I have a Chinese Tractor, I have had it for 15 yrs. It is OK or at least it was until something in the engine went kablooey! It ocurred right in the middle of haying season!! I found a MF TO35 1964 . It more then fills the bill!
have a 63' MF35 diesel, has survived three generations and is still going (perkins engines are reliable and easy to rebuild), still our best/favorite general purpose tractor (bushhogging, boxblading, etc.). The only weak point imo (and a royal pain in the ass to rebuild) is the factory steering box.
I would like to get another Massey at some point in the future. I just had to have a loader, so I sold it and bought a newer tractor. I've been keeping my eye out for a 135 diesel or something similar.
I love old Masseys. My dad had Masseys when I was growing up and I got to run some of those. I think he started with a Massey 60 and went to a 200 and a 220 and then to a 275. His 200 and 220 had a removable side shifting backhoe. But all his Massys had three-point hitches and PTO. He did a lot of rototilling for orchards and weed abatement in large Fields gardens fire breaks etc. Most of the time he used his backhoe and I would do the rototilling and weed abatement with the Massey. I guess I really should call them Ferguson's instead of Massey's. A few years ago I purchased a New Holland 33 horsepower and started doing weed abatement but I couldn't find enough work with it and sold it. That New Holland was a piece of junk. The very first year that I had it I broke a gear in the transmission by just driving straight with no load on it. Luckily it was under warranty. The levers on the fenders had too much slop because of the linkage kept bending too easily. When I would drive through fields of tall grass or weeds it would rip wires apart underneath the tractor which was a really stupid design on their part.
My dad's 275 was an agricultural tractor but he had them install the industrial loader on it because he thought it was better for doing loader work. So it looked a little bit strange. It was a red and gray tractor with a yellow loader on it. They had to do a few modifications to the tractor to make it work on there. My dad had to take the hood off to do regular maintenance on the tractor so he ended up just leaving the hood off all the time.
Unfortunately we had to sell it and get a tractor with a loader. I'd like to get another a few years down the road, but it's not in the budget right now.
I have a 1950 IH Farmall Super A it came with a #204 Bush Hog full set of cultivators, and disk hillers and paid $2400.00 I have a IH disk harrow and one bottom plow I purchase later. I also have a 2001 New Holland TC33D I purchase for $6740.00 with a 6' Land Pride finishing mower. I have a 5' Taylor-Way #962 tiller that is a 2017 model that was used once. Still had original paint on the tines. paid about $1100.00 for new they are $1500.00 Buying used is a lot cheaper and as I was a tractor mechanic for a local John Deere dealer I can repair them myself.
I see that your video was made in 2018, just wondering how well your tractor has preformed for you and if you still have it. I bought a 1954 Harry Ferguson at the start of this year (2021), and it has several things that needed attention and I've spent most of this year doing to it. But it's running really good and doesn't smoke. I've just changed the fluid, that cost me a bundle. And I'm getting ready to put fresh paint on it very soon. But it's like yours, a cute tractor. Unfortunately I had to sell this one to get one with a front end loader. I'd love to get another old Massey someday. Maybe I can justify spending the money if I ever need to cut and bale hay.
I wondered about the "power steering,," I have a 1954 Harry Ferguson and it doesn't have power steering. I don't the 1955 had any either. Just wondering when did power steering come about on these tractors.

I BOUGHT ME A NEW KUBOTA WITH FRONT END LOADER AND BACKHOE I WORK IT TO IT'S A NICE TRACTOR TO I GOT A TILLER AND BOX BLADE AND 2 BOTTOM PLOW'S AND I GOT THEM FOR THE MASSY FERGUSON 35 THE BOX BLADE IS A HEAVY ONE ITS WAS MADE WHEN THEY USE STEEL TO MAKE THEM
I wish I could tell you. I sold the tractor not long after this to get one with a front end loader. I'm pretty sure I went to O'Reilly auto parts and told them what I needed, then made sure it matched. They said I could return it if it was the wrong one. I might still have the box. I'll look when I'm out there tomorrow and leave you another comment if I still have it.
