This channel is really good. The planning, attention to details and true passion for what is being produced comes across in these videos. There's obviously a huge amount of time invested in this channel and I noticed how how many of the comments are replied to. It Is great that many of the vehicles chosen to review are attainable luxury because of extreme depreciation.

Thanks for the comment! There is usually a lot of planning that goes into these videos, especially the performance vehicles as we need to plan routes for filming and bring extra hands to help out. We're hoping to continue to provide content on older vehicles while working on new stuff too!

Your review really helped me decide which suv to purchase. I bought the 2018 CX 5 GT with the tech package and love it! My wife was set on the CRV until she test drove the CX 5- now she won’t give me the keys back! I also test drove the 2016 CX 5 to see if there really was a noticeable difference. The change in ride quality is substantial. Thanks again for the excellent videos you’ve done on this MAZDA- I’ll be looking for your one year review soon!

Agreed! The CX-5 drives very well and is a smooth comfy ride. Our CRV is terrible to drive, rough, loud, and very cheap feeling even for the top trim level. Mazda is definitely doing something good here

We think so too! They've definitely upped their game with this generation CX-5. The CR-V used to be a fun little car, but today it's so unappealing and cheap.

CRV is very overrated

Also CRV is that noisy even WITH Active Noise Cancelling (counter-noise). What effect will constant exposure to that have on the occupants? For example, I love my Bose headphones but I notice side effects such as ringing ears and fatigue after hours of use.

I just bought one and picking it up in 1 week. Your comments in he video reflect my experience during the test drive of the CX5. I did back to back test driving of the Rav4, CRV, CX5 and Outback over a 2 days period and short listed the CX5 and Outback. In the end I picked the CX5 over the Outback because of all the positives you identify in the video. CX5 is the best looking (subjective), best quality (class leading interior material and design, best handling, most nimble, fun to drive and best value among the SUV I tested.?

Glad to hear it, and congrats! We absolutely love driving our CX-5, and even after having a lot of other crossovers cycle through our garage since December we still think it's the best choice. We try to be as unbiased and open minded as possible when it comes to this show. We certainly have a lot of prejudices towards specific cars, like the ones we've mentioned. Sometimes we drive something like this CX-5 and find out we've been wrong about a lot, and other times like the VW Beetle or other VWs we've driven outside of TestDrive that affirms our beliefs. As we continue to grow I hope to be able to open myself up to different cars like this, who knows one day I might be driving an 80s Cadillac, something I swore I'd never do!

Good review. I've been driving my new 2017 Mazda CX-5 GT AWD for 2 weeks now. My driving has been split between city and freeway evenly. This vehicle has served all of my needs as for comfort, hi-tech safety features, and a sporty body style. And add to this a well appointed, even, luxurious and quiet interior, I can honestly say that I like this car very much. The things that I would knock include a feeling of some ....tire roll(?) shortly after I enter a corner, but the vehicle does exit better than I anticipate. It's hard to describe. I'm wondering if this is more due to the softer dampening rate of the shocks for the 2017 model. One other thing that bothers me a bit is the brakes: when you depress the brake pedal, it grabs late. This could also be because the slick transmission (which might be the star of this vehicle), doesn't downshift quickly, so there is a lot of forward momentum as you come to a stop light. The transmission does downshift when you want the car to move quickly however. I think Mazda makes up for the modest horsepower rating by doing that. It's not a fast car, but it's very responsive. And finally, I've only put on about 200 miles on this car, but I am a little disappointed that I've only been able to get about 20 miles to the gallon. I've yet to even use sport mode, and tried to be light on the pedal. I had hoped to get at least 23 to 25 miles to the gallon. Clearly, stop and go traffic is not this cars friend. Maybe it's too soon for me to gauge the mpg. I was warned by the sales person that it takes some miles for the fuel mpg calculator in the car to accurately track mileage. We'll see. Still, I am happy with my purchase.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
We haven't noticed that issue with the brakes, they seem average when compared with other vehicles in the segment. We've driven about 1,000km now so I'll check the fuel economy to see how it is, but overall most of the compact SUVs we've driven haven't been phenomenal with milage.
@sharktooth8772
@sharktooth8772 6 лет назад
I examined my route to work. I made an error: my driving is only 20% freeway and the rest is stop and go traffic. I should also add that during rush hour in the San Francisco Bay area, there is quite a bit of slowdowns on the freeway as well. That might explain my poor gas mileage. I've also realized that my previous complaints of the brakes grabbing late is because I'm not adjusting well between driving my SLK and CX-5.The car is very light compared to the CUV. I'm sure with more driving experience, the CX-5 will "drive better" as I adjust to it.

New vehicles usually dont hit the advertised EPA ratings as the engines still need to be broken in. Wait for a few more months and after 2-3K the mileage will improve.

There are blank buttons for options you guys don't have, like the i-Stop system we have so you need a button to disable it in case you want. We also have the Reset button for the tire pressure system in there.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
It’s not so much options we don’t have, but rather they don’t include overrides for Canadian models. For some reason the TPMS reset button is excluded on the CX-5, we’ve been told at the dealer level it’s to avoid customers resetting it all the time, yet every other model we’ve driven from Mazda still has one.

We still have the E38! Right now she's in a bit of a legal limbo. We don't have insurance on it anymore since we've moved out-of-province, but can't get new local license plates on it until it passes a safety inspection. Since she's leaking gas it won't pass, so we've decided to take it off the road for now. The plan is to still do videos on it, and since we've got a reliable daily we might even dismantle the engine and film it. Get the TCG done along with an overhaul.

It's nice to see that every car manufacturer is making the infotainment systems etc tech smooth looking. It will be interesting to see how they perform after 10 years , let's say in New -17 S-Class that has imo the smoothest and advanced tech in it. Will they be like old computers that no one uses anymore because they are laggy or will they work a-ok after years pass by

Very good points, if we look back on the early iDrive and COMAND systems from the 2000s, they are pretty slow and outdated by todays standard, but not completely useless. Our E38 7 Series is still in the garage! Just not legal for road use at this time.
@BeesonsCars
@BeesonsCars 6 лет назад
I have first hand experience with an old infotainment system. I drive a 2007 Mercedes S550 and find the COMAND system to be pretty good. It's been updated with the latest software and works as well as my family's 2017 Lexus GS350 (I prefer it actually.) The nav display is very good, has birds-eye view and other displays. Has pretty much every infotainment feature you'd ever want including FM, AM, Satellite Radio, DVD changer, MP3 (PCMCIA slot or SD card up to 128GB in 2007!) and I recently activated the auxiliary input so I can add the iPod and Bluetooth audio adapter from MB or just use the aux cable like I am now. I was really worried when getting the car that I would have being stuck with the outdated COMAND system, but now I have no regrets. The only feature I'd really like is direct USB connection for iPod interface and Bluetooth audio. The only worry for me is that the system is hard drive based so if it fails the nav system is useless. But, MB stored the OS for the computer on a small internal SSD so if the Hard Drive fails the climate, audio, and settings are still able to be used.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
That's not too bad then. With our E38 once the nav computer fails you need to replace the unit, that's how we bought our car originally, and we've had a lot of commenters over the years ask the same questions. We like the systems BMW and Mercedes have been using over the years, older models still feel modern despite changing technologies.

What are your thoughts on Rusting Issues with Mazda ? Also are you planning to do a long term review on your mazda CX-5 ? Thanks
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
That was certainly one of the stigmas we believed before driving this car, and there's no denying that pre-2007 Mazdas had significant rust issues, however we haven't seen any model year 2007 or newer cars with rust. Mazda has been committed to fixing the cause behind the rust issues and I think it's paying off for them. We do plan on doing long-term updates with this CX-5 similar with what we've done for the past 2 years on our BMW 740iL. We have our first major update episode planned for the 6 month mark, which will be around the end of February.

Hi Nile, great video! thank you for sharing your CX-5 experiences with us. I'm a Mazda 3 owner, and I'm very satisfied with my experiences with my Mazda 3. I'm thinking about purchasing a SUV to replay my sedan, and I like what I heard about 2017 CX-5 so far. However, many people told me that if there are 4 people with several pieces of baggage in this car, it will not perform very well. I live in Toronto and u know what kind of vehicle we need in the winter in Canada. So, can you let me know whether CX-5 is really lack of horsepower if it is fully loaded? Thank you so much!
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
The CX-5 has 187 hp, which is the same as the X3 xDrive28d we featured in our Showdown with this car. We also featured the 2017 Hyundai Tucson earlier on in our show (before we called ourselves TestDrive), and we found it's 164 hp engine to be underpowered. The reality is engines are getting smaller and they're adding forced induction, mostly turbos with a lot of these smaller cars. The CX-5 advantage is being naturally aspirated and a half litre larger than the Tucson or X3. We haven't had the chance to load the car up fully yet, but we did take 3 adults and our daughter out over the weekend and the drive felt the same as if I were driving it on my own. Since we own this car we'll be doing a similar long term review series as we did for our 2001 BMW 740iL with a 6-Month update around February, we'll make sure we try loading it up to see how it performs! Hopefully you won't need to make a decision before then, if not I'll see what we can do and try to send you an update directly.

Is the heads-up display projected on the windscreen or, like most, a pop-up piece of plastic? I think Toyota Prius has the former, which would be nice in the Mazda ... thanks. Nice to see reviews coming from Canada and in particular from Quebec, and Montreal.
@PRNTestDrive

It is windshield-based, I believe only the CX-5 and CX-9 currently do this from Mazda, whereas the other HUDs that we've used on the Mazda6 and CX-3 require the small screen to flip up. I imagine Mazda will phase those out over the next few years, at the windshield projected versions work very well now, we've been very impressed with GM's HUDs.

My daughter test drove the CX5 and liked it. She found the Honda CR-V too big in the back for her (no kids). Based on reviews it seems slower than the CR-V and has worse mileage but is likely going to have less engine problems long term. If I still lived in Québec (Aylmer) would definitely get AWD. She's living in Los Angeles (very expensive gas no real winters) so she will likely stick with FWD. I wonder if you looked at the Lighting package? Also, I note that you didn't get the roof rack---not worth it?
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
I don't believe there's a lighting package offered here, aside from things like the roof rack as a dealer-installed option, we got the fully-optioned CX-5. We did buy a hitch for the back that allows us to attach something light, like the bike rack we bought. It's easier for us to use that rather than throw something on the roof. My wife ins't a huge fan of roof racks either.

@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
When compared with other SUVs in the segment it's about the same. I find all new cars have poor(er) visibility than vehicles from 15 years ago. The mirrors are pretty good on the sides of this one and I don't find the dashboard gets in the way that much. We had a 2017 Nissan Rogue over the weekend and the visibility was similar, same with the BMW X3 we featured in our Showdown a couple weeks ago.

yes, modern car tend to be sharp in the front and with much more body than windows. surprisingly the smaller mazda cx3 seems to have more visibility than cx5, others suv i dont know, if i drive this kind of cars in a city im feel scared to scratch wheels on sidewalks or bumpers in tight corners, but probably is also the more narrows road in italy that feel worst the visibility :)

Owners manual is a great help, but you’ll need to hit the cruise button to enable it, then set the speed with the - button.

How can I talk about a car that isn't available in this market, not to mention the entire brand?

Just wish Mazda put the 2.5 turbo in this car, but alas they don't, so I went with a Forester XT. Welcome to Montreal too. :D

Thanks! I'd be curious to see what the performance would be like with a turbocharged engine, maybe Mazda should go all out with a Mazdaspeed CX-5 concept!
@greentjmtl
@greentjmtl 6 лет назад
If they are willing to go all out, 350 HP and 350 ft.lb wouldn't be out of the question. Now that would be a fun CX5.

Serious question- why would your list of manufacturers to not buy include Mazda, VW and Cadillac? I'm quite curious.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
These are the 3 brands I had/have extreme bias against from either personal or close-personal experience and opinion. All 3 made this list for quality issues, and overall value for money. Mazda had rust issues, VW has poor build quality and overall boring vehicles, and Cadillac has always felt like a Pontiac with lipstick to me. Mazda has certainly improved their products over the years, and they're making a serious effort to make quality products. I still wouldn't say the same about the other two.
@mikem2253
@mikem2253 6 лет назад
Interesting perceptions, except for VW.I currently own a 2010 Mazdaspeed 3 with no rust at all, mind you it gets oil sprayed every year. In regards to VW, we currently own a 2016 Jetta 1.8T Highline- I'm curious to see how this goes. So far, no issues to report in a year of ownership (knock on wood).Have you ever sat or driven a CTS or ATS?
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
I had the chance to drive the previous generation CTS-V and the new ATS-V however we haven't had the chance to keep them for any extended period of time to review.

Very nice review, but please - say "Maahs Dah" not "Mazz Dah". I know, I know, our Canadian friends prefer the 2nd version, but it hurts my ears. :) I also agree with your comment about looking at the CRV making us sad. My daughter just bought a 2018 model CX-5 GT in the same color you have and we love it.

Glad to hear it! We really like the eternal blue paint, if only it were available we'd have gone with that instead. But we still think this darker colour looks great!

@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
There is a backup camera, but no parking assist, though it's a broad term. Do you mean self-parking or parallel parking detection?
@Pranav_m_Mistry
@Pranav_m_Mistry 6 лет назад
I should've been more specific. I cannot expect it to have self parking, but parallel parking detection and front and rear sensors? And thanks for the video, it's helpful!
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
There are no parking sensors on the North American model unfortunately, they do not offer them here. We did drive the 2018 CX-9 which comes with front/rear parking sensors, but as far as we know they do not have any parking assist features. It might be something Mazda plans to implement down the road, in theory it should be software based as long as the sensors are present.

Exterior is the matter of preference and subjective. I also think CX-5 is the winner undoubtedly(not that ugly rear though) but we shouldn't just say CR-V and RAV4 are ugly shit lol they have their own good looking sides as I've seen tons of them on the roads.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
It's true that appearance is a personal opinion, along with reviews in general. We see some CR-Vs on the road, but if we were to start counting them here the CX-5 would be the clear winner, even compared with domestic compact SUVs.

Apple carplay in Toyota !?
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
Correction on that one, might just be Siri Eyes Free, which I suppose is a limited version of Apple's in-car offerings. We were really hoping to feature a car with CarPlay and Android Auto so we could see how they perform, but we still haven't found one, whereas a lot of the domestic competition has gotten it.

only in north america an 8.0 second 0-100 km/h suv is considered underpower lol
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
That's certainly a good point. A car like this doesn't need to be overly fast, as long as it can get up to highway speeds reasonably quick that's all anyone really needs with this class of vehicle. It doesn't feel as underpowered as some of the other compact SUVs we've driven.
@Tonyx.yt.
@Tonyx.yt. 6 лет назад
yes, absolutely, but this kind of cars in europe usualy are around 150hp and do 0-100 in around 9.5 and nobody call them underpowered and speed limits are higher on the european freeways
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
It's also quite different out there, the desire for horsepower doesn't seem to be the same as it is in North America.

Yeah the Rav4 is horribly ugly but very popular here in the U.S. The CRV isn't much better. The CX5 is handsome or even sexy and full of style. Its got everything most people need. Mazda has said car play and android auto is coming with an update. 9to5mac.com/2017/03/13/mazda-carplay-updates-connect/

That's great news! We weren't sure if the existing vehicles would get the updated, but that should clear things up. We know it's possible as some have gotten Android Auto onto their current Mazda systems.
