We get a decent amount of questions about what we did before making RU-vid videos, so we thought we’d cover our jobs as an Engineer and Graphic designer, what we liked, what we did not like, and how it shaped our current business. We also do a Q&A segment from podcast listeners!

"Explore your options" is awesome advice, especially when people are trying to create better work situations for themselves. Full-time and freelance aren't the only options, and you guys did a great job exploring other ways to work, both for yourselves and for the companies you worked for. I think it's often overlooked that you can negotiate other arrangements, part-time, different hours, remote, etc, and not just for your own benefit but also for the benefit of the company. Maybe you want less hours and your company wants to save some money. Win-win.

Okay okay- so this has been one of my favorite podcasts (even though I love all your stuff and always appreciate it) 1) because of the fact that you guys went over your paths, and acknowledged the difficulties and disadvantages of certain things, acknowledged you living and financial situation, which is especially relevant to a lot of young people who are hoping RU-vid is just a magical recipe for instant success and enormous wealth-and (for me) those who never really had a clear career path, and struggling with your current choices while watching all your friends prosper in their clear cut degrees. 2) because I recently went skydiving and I KNOW FRENS. I KNOW. It was simultaneously the most beautiful and most terrifying thing I’ve ever done. And I know EXACLT WHAT YOU MEAN ABOUT GOING LAST. And oh my god, when the people in front of you are just falling like “bloop” and just disappears so fast and the tin can plane bounces a bit because the weight is shifting-definitely the worst part, outside of the initial freefall. Dear lord, I lost a part of my soul then and there. I think I’d do it again (especially in a beautiful location like New Zealand) just because I wasn’t able to enjoy as much as I would have like due to the sheer terror and constant inner scream of “IM GOING TO DIE”. And it’s interesting how you felt that you were floating during the freefall and not as much when the parachute opened-for me it was the opposite. I enjoyed the floating part more, the freefall was just pure stomach drop for me, the entire time. And GOODNESS GRACIOUS, THE TURNNNSSSS-yes, super dizzying, and we basically went in a spiral the entire way down, which was made worse by the fact I couldn’t tell where we were landing, and that amounted to huge insecurity. And yes, please talk more about New Zealand, especially “canyoning”?

Haha yay awesome to hear it!! Think a podcast is such a great place to dive into things like this. RU-vid is definitely not a magical recipe or for everyone. It just happened to be the right thing for us :) AHHH that’s so awesome you went skydiving too! Definitely plan to do more story times in future podcasts!

Always interesting to learn a bit more about your backstories! I've worked for the same company for basically 18 years, but in many different positions (it's a manufacturing company, so there are lots of opportunities to do very different things), and have found that it's an unfortunate truth that there are jobs you can have that are absolutely fantastic, feel very gratifying to do (and do correctly/better than anyone else), and not be compensated nearly enough to make them worth staying in. I think it's important to have a varied work experience, because that gives you a perspective regarding everything you do for the rest of your life! I will always remember one position I had for eight months, and just how miserable I was for those eight months; it's amazing I was able to keep my girlfriend at the time (now my wife) with how much I let the position effect my personality. Now, when I'm having a day where things aren't going so great, I can think back to those eight months, and be thankful that I'm not still in that position! I've not done the skydiving thing, but I have done a short bungee jump before! That was an interesting experience; I jumped backward, doing a flip, and ended up kicking the platform with the steel-toed boot I was wearing! Worried the heck out of my mom who was watching at the time, because it made a pretty distinct sound! It was an around the waist style jump, and was fun enough, and I would probably do it again, but likely only if someone else paid for me to do it; I'm still not sure I want to jump out of a perfectly good airplane! Would definitely be interested in more story time in the future! It sounds like y'all have done a lot of entertaining things on vacations, and those are always fun to hear about!
@EvanandKatelynPodcast
@EvanandKatelynPodcast 5 лет назад
Mmmhmn think that having varied word experience is super valuable! Oooh dang bungee jumping sounds almost as scary or more than skydiving lol! Also when you're up there it's just your decision to go. When skydiving you are just part of a conveyor belt lol! Definitely have more storytimes planned for the future :D

Oh my goodness, I loved your skydiving story. Hearing you talk about how nervous yall were gave me flashbacks to when my husband an I did it. We are both afraid of heights, but I took him skydiving for his birthday one year. I wasn't super nervous until we were actually riding up in the plane. The plane really is super small, and we're straddling this long bench seat with a person strapped to your back. I remember on the ride up is when my anxiety started going through the roof and I was SO close to having a full on panic attack and backing out. But I had paid a lot of extra money to have them record our jumps for us to take home on a dvd, and you don't get a refund for any of it if you back out, so I didn't want my failure caught on video. So I just sat there focusing on taking deep breaths and staring straight ahead and not looking at anyone. One of my friends that went with us tried talking to me and I just shook my head at him. My husband (boyfriend at the time) had to tell him that I was trying to focus and not psych myself out (he knows me so well). So a couple people went before me and when it was my turn to move to the door, I was just like "don't look down don't look down don't look down". We were only there for like a couple seconds and then all of a sudden, we were out. When we jumped forward, the guy flipped us backwards so I just saw sky, plane, and then ground. I also screamed at first, and so my mouth was open and I felt like I was drowning on air and couldn't breathe. It'd be like riding a motorcycle going 200mph while your mouth is open. Not smart. lol. The freefall definitely felt more like flying than falling. You're so high up you can't really tell that you're falling. That was the best part. Then when the parachute came out, I did have those "stomach dropping" feelings like when you're on a roller coaster, because the guy kept pulling us from one side to the other, so it was making us do these big swings from left to right. Each time he would do that my stomach dropped and I screamed. I wanted to tell him STOP THAT but he was having so much fun lol. It was scary and amazing and wonderfully exhilarating and the best adrenaline rush I've ever had. For the next month after we did it, I just felt fearless like I could do absolutely anything at all. What a thrill. And we just went skydiving in San Marcos. I can't even image how much more incredible it would have been with the kind of view yall had. A couple years later we were even supposed to do it again, but I chickened out and said I didn't want to go. I later found out that he was going to propose with a huge banner when we went again, but then I chickened out and he had to think of a different proposal. OOPSIE. But like, I figured I did it once and survived, and I don't want to do it again. The older I get the more scared I seem to get. But I might actually do it again like if we went somewhere with an amazing view. But just here near home? nah probably not. :p
@EvanandKatelynPodcast

Haha omg! Should have proposed on the first jump 😋

Fun and interesting as usual. I attended a really great School of architecture. We had a 4 unit design class (four hours a day, every day) every quarter, for four years, right from the beginning, with all kinds of projects. Each student was assigned his own cubicle with a desk and a drafting table and laptop stand and a craft table. Our cubicles were in a huge building shared with all other architecture students. The building was open 24x7. We had conference rooms for group projects, and for meeting with pretend clients or professors. World famous architects came walking through looking at our projects, and wanting to have bull sessions. Some of our projects were based on their suggestions, and they were invited to participate in our evaluations and grading, so they felt entitled to walk through and talk to us. The school gave us really interesting and challenging projects and we practically lived there. I learned so much! It was one of the highlights of my life. We had a five star chef teach us how to design beautiful salads. We had a psychologist talk to us about "color therapy" and we designed and built a padded "timeout room" for a mental institution. We had an "early childhood development" expert help us design a playground for a Montessori Preschool. We got the kids to help us "invent" a new kind of playground. It was so fun. We also designed and built an outdoor amphitheater for school rock and roll concerts. All those experiences really helped shape me. .... You guys have answered a question I have had for years about something that went splat on the top of my head. All these years I have been thinking it was a bird,. Now I know the truth. After that I have always worn a cap.... I am going to be at the Bay Area Maker Fair in two weeks. Are you?
