One of the most frequent questions we get asked revolve around how to get started making. While it really depends on the person we share our own journey and address some common excuses. Katelyn also challenges Evan to a round of: how well do you know Pinterest trends.

Thanks!! Yeah we've gotten used to the idea of only making on camera now but the thing that helps with that is knowing that we're going to continue making for such a long time, that we should not feel in such a rush to always be making things if that makes sense :)

My problem is I prefer buying tools over actually using tools. I've had a table saw for 18 months now and I've only just started using it because it's terrifying 😂 although, it's very handy having an SDS drill, 2 cordless hammer drills, 2 regular cordless drills, 2 impact drivers because you never have to change bits! I also bought a track saw because it was on sale for £50. I also bought a cordless circular saw and a cordless jigsaw and I've now decided every new tool I get will be cordless. Not having a cord is so much easier! I'd love to get a pocket hole jig but they're impossible to find for a reasonable price here in the UK.
@EvanandKatelynPodcast

Oooh yeah table saws are probably the most scary thing we have lol 😋 Also yes, having ALL the drills is pretty awesome!

My issue keeping me from creating for youtube... I have a fear of drawing on camera. I have a space tht stays set up, and I have no issue drawing while others watch. I think my issues are dealing with all the tech, and the very little setup I have to do. I like to pull out a piece, and just do it. Not setup, and worry about if I am recording the painting being done... I need to get over that... and fast. I moved apartments for this specific reason... So I need to get at doing what I do best... creating.

I think as you do it more, the tech side will become less and less of a big deal 😁👍

Idea for people with limited space for making stuff: Dremel products. You can add on to a Dremel with a lot of really useful small versions of larger tools. Router, cutting tools, drill press, grinder, etc. You can make a little Dremel desktop workstation that can fit in a very small space.

This is a good podcast to help really get people interested in the starting of making things. What was really nice was finding the particular tools that you feel are sufficient for a category of make projects. Maybe a quick tool recommendation video could be something you might consider in your content creation ideas. I always find that making things for others seems to be a lot easier for me start to do than making things for myself. Like when I am given endless opportunities to make things with the tools I have, I find myself deciding to not do anything so much. I mostly default to things that are more for necessity than anything else. Do you ever feel this way? Would you also consider making a video revisiting one of your old videos and critiquing it to see what you could have done better? I think people would like to see how you have grown and this might be a way to show that. Maybe not now, but after you feel sufficient time has passed for you to see one of your old projects with fresh eyes,
@EvanandKatelynPodcast
@EvanandKatelynPodcast 5 лет назад
Ooh good ideas! We've added them to the list :D also think it totally makes sense that making something for somebody else would be easier than making something for yourself. Especially if you tell someone about it. Accountability can do wonders for productivity!

I think one of the more difficult things to get over is deciding which of the many projects most people have is the one to get started on! At least, I know that's one of the problems my wife and I have. We've tackled the necessary projects with our house, but now it's a matter of picking which projects provide the most benefit, which becomes much more subjective! Entertaining game! It's always interesting to see what is popular, especially for me, because I stay so far outside of what is going on in the world, ha ha! Too many other things to concentrate on, I guess!
@EvanandKatelynPodcast
@EvanandKatelynPodcast 5 лет назад
Very true! Usually for us it was either what are we most excited about, or what seemed like it would be the easiest/a faster project to check off the list. Glad you liked the game! Haha I realized we are out of the loop on a lot of things too 😂😂

Funny the different perspectives. I think building with metal is much easier than building with wood. Popup tents are good when a project won't fit in your work space.
@markcoren2842
@markcoren2842 5 лет назад
Oooooo a pop-up tent is a great idea! I'm converting our garage (currently used as a huge storage space) into a workshop area. It's been a catch-22 because I need some space so I can make some space. A tent will make the process much easier over the next few weeks. Thanks for the idea!

@TimWilborne
@TimWilborne 5 лет назад
 Evan and Katelyn Podcast Yes it is just easier for me to put two pieces of steel together and weld them or drill it and bolt them. No splitting wood or getting that lethal splinter :) Amber is working on a live edge coffee table right now and even on it, it's just easier for me to build steel legs from it. It's all in what you are used to working with I guess. We've got a mantel project coming up and it's supposed to be all wood. Guess we'll see how many places I can conceal steel brackets to hold it together ;)

my gf would say that starting is not the problem but finishing... (I've just re-read what i typed and that's not what I mean). Example is I wanted to make a wooden model ship, I've hand-carved the shape of the ship but that was four years ago, I still haven't finished the ship. Another time, I wanted to make a desert terrarium, I've bought the cacti but still haven't started/finished (my excuse is i'm still looking for a good large bottle for my container).
@EvanandKatelynPodcast
@EvanandKatelynPodcast 5 лет назад
😂😂! But yeah, totally understand that. Honestly for us having some sort of external reason to finish is a big thing. Like finishing an outdoor bench because we had people coming over and needed more seating on the patio, or signing up for a craft fair which made us finish products by a certain date.

I like how you touched on only getting supplies for project you're going to do now instead of what you think you'll need in the future. Like right now at the transition between spring and summer I'm trying to plant more things indoor/outdoor and I'm trying not to get too greedy or else I'm just gonna waste a bunch of money and organic material by the time i actually get to planting those things (seeds, saplings, soil etc). I think that's also why I really love your acrylic pours or simple DIY art projects, because right now I have a lot of those existing materials and I'm just starting to create again after like...8 years or so of not creating anything. Taking those immediate project purchases has really taken the financial and time weight off of me and given me the inspiration to work with what I have before purchasing more things for a project I'm only gonna be guilty for not starting on. Great podcast guys!
@EvanandKatelynPodcast
@EvanandKatelynPodcast 5 лет назад
Avoiding the guilt is huge! I think it also helps eliminate the time it takes to decide what to tackle next if you only have supplies for your next two projects rather than your next ten

Yes! Any excuse to go ghost hunting 😁👻 And yeah, it can get super pricey. With some things its easier to justify the cost if you can make it for less than what you'd buy it for, but with other things it's just gonna cost more to make it. Sometimes you can start making stuff to sell on the side in order to fund new material purchases 😁

Does it help you guys in your youtube channel if I stream your podcasts several times in the background while I work? I didn't know if the algorithm only works for 1 user account or 1 listen session. I find that there are so many nuggets of information that I get with each listen session that it is worth my time to re-listen to some. If I decided to just get the podcast in audio form I listen to that independently. I would rather help you guys.

Biggest issue I run into is the cost of materials. Lumber is expensive and when you don't have much leftover hard to stock up for future projects.
@EvanandKatelynPodcast
@EvanandKatelynPodcast 5 лет назад
Very true. Especially if you're going for anything other than pine. We would try to justify it because it would be cheaper than buying the thing if we bought it out of solid wood. You could also start selling things on Etsy to help fund materials purchases maybe

When starting out, definitely buy tools as needed. Just the act of getting started is the most important part. It honestly does not matter what tools are given to me. I can find a way to get to the finished product. Waiting for the perfect set of tools or the perfect version of the project keeps you from actually starting. My favorite projects are the ones that morph during the process.
