PRO TIP. I install A/C units all the time by myself. The hardest part-after you fly it up, is aligning the gasket. I install the 4 bolts on the new roof unit, then, when I set it in place, I am relatively sure it is square in the opening. It is a bugger trying to lift it from inside and align the gasket. BTW-excellent foil tape work.

God, trying to align the gasket from the inside while standing on a ladder when its balls hot in a unit. The worst xD

I "almost" replaced the unit in my Coleman. It had a 13K unit, but it really didn't cool it well, so decided to replace it with a 15K Mach unit. Well, in researching the power control, I discovered why it wasn't cooling. When you showed the roof construction, my first though, WOW that is CLEAN! The roof vent openings in the Dutchmen/Coleman looked like they hacked them open and then didn't clean up afterwards before putting the foam insulating tape around them. Reason it wasn't cooling, and probably why it iced up a few times in Utah, the forward duct was closed off by the tape falling down and blocking it! I cut the tape out of the opening, put the cover back on, turned it on and construction crud blew out the front vents! It never blew air out the fronts at that velocity. Problem solved though, it cooled it well like it should, and saved me at least $1000 or more.

The wire with the blue plug that you referenced as the thermostat is actually the freeze sensor(thermocouple). FYI. It’ll shut the AC down if the coils freeze up. Also, don’t be scared of torquing down the AC on the roof. I’ve seen them leak if there isn’t enough compression on the gasket. I’d snug it up 1/2” of compression on the gasket. Let it sit for a while and go back and tighten up a little more.
@dragonbutt

Did my Dometic 15k today in about 45 minutes. You went further than I did though dropping the bracketry and removing the control box then redoing the tape. I left everything in place, pulled the old ac, and dropped in the new. Luckily all of my tape stayed in place and matched up to the nrw unit. Honestly I wish I went with etrailer instead of ordering and having it shipped. Units top cover arrived with a broken top cover/shroud. I am 15 minutes from etrailer and could have picked up in person.

Good idea to periodically check those 4 bolts for tightness. I have found sometimes they loosen up and the AC can shift a little if you are on a lot of rough roads.

Another thing to check out that I have found on my chaparral was the ducting tape in the vents, when I pulled all the covers off of them the tape was sticking straight up and restricting the air flow threw the duct system. Once I fixed all the vents I have about a five degree difference inside and you can feel the air really coming out all the vents more evenly now. The vent covers take a little finessing to get off but definitely worth checking out.

I've done more of these where i work than i'd like to remember. Rooftop ACs are super easy to replace, provided you have one thats plug and play. The hardest part is getting the new one on the roof and the old one down. Also, pro industry tip: Get you a sheet of foam or cardboard so you can set the AC down wherever without worrying about tearing the roof. Whenever we do roofjobs in bodyshop thats our trick. You can also set them on the tops of slides (a big slide room will hold the weight of 3 ACs and two people)
@nw24153ns

With the ceiling of the building easy to reach, one person could use a combination of winches (or come along or block and tackle or whatever your preference would be) to securely lift and lower that AC unit.

@BigTruckBigRV
@BigTruckBigRV 4 года назад
I think they are great for accomplishing their designed function, which is to help clear debris from the top while retracting the slides. However, they can get damaged and sag plus make a lot of noise when windy. It's very windy here. We would likely get them on our next unit though. Not having to sweep off the slide tops is super nice.

I have a dometic, 1 year old, in my Open Range that keeps blowing the breaker under high use. If I turn it down to low (never use auto in high heat situations), it doesn't blow the breaker so far. I'm wondering if this is a degrading issue? We haven't used the AC a lot, despite being full timers. Probably used the heater more than the AC, and now I'm an expert on sail switches.

@augiemattheiss
@augiemattheiss 4 года назад
I always wonder why people don't use a propane oven in an RV... mine works fine, I must be missing something. A gas oven is extremely useful to most cooks that I know. I hear all these complains about the small ovens, are people pre-heating them correctly or are some just made so cheaply they are simply far too hot on the bottom? I know people put fire brick in the bottom or use baking stones but I've done neither.
@BroJerHWG
@BroJerHWG 4 года назад
@@augiemattheiss i presume a propane oven vents its fumes directly outside and protects the interior from toxic CO.... but does a propane oven overheat the interior?.... does it use exhaust fans to vent the heat directly outside or do you just rely on windows to do that?
@All2Skitzd
@All2Skitzd 4 года назад
I've used mine once and it worked fine. Most full-timers either put a pizza stone in or a unglazed ceramic tile in if they use their oven. Air fryers and the convention oven in the microwave is way more popular. I've never used microwave for baking because I don't know how but i use air fryer when I can't cook outside. I usually use my grill as a oven and a stove
@All2Skitzd

Advent is a Chinese rip off of the dometic brisk air . Because dometic was making theirs in China the Chinese manufacturers were half assed making the dometic. I went through three of them . They all mysteriously lost the Freon . You can google this . Even the head guys at dometic said they did it.
@BigTruckBigRV
@BigTruckBigRV 4 года назад
I'm very aware of the Advent and Domestic AC issue 9 years ago. Advent is owned and licensed by ASA which also produces the ASA inComand system, that is installed as OEM equipment in many newer RVs. Apparently, Dometic was never able to prove that the Advent system violated any patents or infringed on their IP. The two brands look very different now 9yrs later though. Here is an interesting article to read where ASA counters Dometics claim back in 2011: blog.graywriterrv.com/?p=277
@binderbinder6920
@binderbinder6920 4 года назад
So the Chinese ripped off something the were making? How exactly does that work? Also if Dometic is going to slap their name on something they outsourced, it’s up to Dometic to maintain quality control.

Big Truck Big RV my trailer wast built in September 2013 as a 2014 but lord only knows how long the acs were sitting around . Just like the tires were two yrs older than the build date. Thanks to your videos and knowing what to look for I’ll be a much more informed buyer next time. Thank god I bought extended warranty cause the three acs paid for that. Even though I think the dometic warranty should have covered it. At any rate you would have thought the epa would have jumped all over it for the harmful effects of all those acs leaking Freon .
@dedalliance1
@dedalliance1 4 года назад
@@binderbinder6920 Happens all of the time. China is a communist Government they can have full control over all the businesses in the country. They really have no respect for 'patent' laws there, it doesn't matter to them. If guy B runs Dometic's manufacturing plant, and his friend guy A wants to get into the same business, guy B just sends him over a couple units to break down and copy, and he can show him exactly how to setup the manufacturing process and all of the tooling required. Or, like in 08, 09, Honda was in financial trouble, so they just abandoned their small engine plant in China (For Generators and other things, lawnmowers and stuff) and then someone either bought the old warehouse or the Government just took it over, but either way someone got their hands on all of the tooling and molds and how to make everything, as well as probably all of the employees, and just started making the engines again. Now they sell them at places like Harbor Freight, aka Predator motors. China doesn't care about human rights, they don't care about patents, they don't care about lawyers they don't care about intellectual property. Even if they piss off companies by stealing their designs, what are they gonna do about it? lol. China's the cheapest place to make things, they're not gonna move ship to make stuff in the US, that'd be too much money. They just deal with it as a part of life.
