Irene is a BIG part of 80s history. As I remember her, everybody either loved her, or was IN love with her.

This was her hit song in the popular movie "Fame," she also sung the hit song for the movie "Flashdance" titled "What a feeling." A really great, very talented young lady, so sorry she passed away recently. I had a crush on her after her appearance in the movie "Fame." RIP Irene.

Fame started out as a movie about the students at New York's High School of Performing Arts (now called LaGuardia High School), so, yes, basically people who were trying to be famous. Then it inspired a TV series in the 80s that had a healthy run. Some of the characters and actors from the movie returned, but there were several new faces, with some leaving and more joining over the years. After that, it also inspired a stage musical, again with totally different characters and plot. Then they tried a new series called Fame LA in the 90s that followed performers (some who graduated from the High School of Performing Arts, but totally different actors and characters), showing their struggles trying to break in to show business. That only lasted one season. Later, it even inspired a reality TV competition where contestants had to be able to sing and dance, and that also lasted one season. Finally, they did a remake of the movie, but with totally new characters and plot. It wasn't as well received as the original, but it had its high points.

Fame was a movie first that came out in 1980 that Irene Cara starred in as Coco Hernandez. Then Fame became a TV show from 1982 to 1987. The movie was remade in 2009. Also, Debbie Allen has been in every incantation of Fame. Janet Jackson was the TV show too!

She should have been a much bigger star. Great singer, really good actress, very pretty and in interviews she seemed funny and very bright. Had a bit of a crush on her back in the 80's. Rest in peace Coco.
