The best self defense is being aware of your surroundings. Most “bad guys” are looking for easy targets… the person with headphones on or looking down at their phone, etc. Some self defense training is good to have as well. I did several years of martial arts training and the biggest thing I got from that is to be constantly aware of your surroundings and to also project that in your body language. Head up, upright posture, look people in the face, let people know you see them and could identity them. But honestly this is why we have a motorhome. If something goes down I want to be able to leave without having to step outside.
I understand the concern for stray bullets. But in gun safety we are always taught to know what's on the other side of your target before you decide to pull the trigger. I carry everywhere but a good option in an RV of you're afraid of over penetration is a shotgun loaded with salt rounds. I'm a concealed carrier too but I also carry a secondary non lethal option like pepper spray. Usually the pepper spray is enough to get a bad guy to back off, but if that doesn't work then you got no choice sometimes. This is why training regularly is important.
I seriously thought about that but did not want to have to secure two items. We went this route to only have one weapon to secure and it would fit in the truck. Great comment, thank you for it and watching.
Exactly. This person is what we call a "butR". I have strong doubts if he does hold a CCW/CPL. He is not thinking hard enough about other situations that may arise as well. As far as Canada is concerned, I only visit there for family and I secure my firearms on the U.S. side first. I am in Canada for a short time, and I try to spend as little money as possible. I do not like spending money in nazi territory. Remember that NAZI is the short term version of the national socialist workers party. As far as driving, I love to drive at night due to less traffic. I plan fuel stops for safer areas, and I am armed.
BEST video ever!, I agree 1000%. Thanks. You gained a subscriber, we are early 70s and pull an Airstream!! Never pull at dark--try to be aware ____yes___most ARE good! Everyone RV owner needs to watch this! Thank YOU!
@@fastestfusionsport2363 We dont. We really try not to come off as pushing one thing over another. We do use Ring for our security and the bike alarms are on Amazon. I'm happy to make specific suggestions if you have any questions though.
I am so horrified by how bad our society has deteriorated. I can recall fifty year ago we all looked out for each other. Your video is very enlightening. A real eye opener. Stay safe thank you for the info.
100% and great comment. Clay is fully trained, Maria not so much. It seems like a better solution and much safer with other people around. Towards the end of the year, we are both going back through the TX CC course.
Hi guys! We will be new RV’ers next year when I go down to two days a week working! I want to work that way because I love my work! Being self employed allows me to do that! So, your information has been so informative, we thank you so much! I’ve subscribed to your channel & will follow you folks always!!!!!!!!!! We will be getting a gun for protection, both type! Bullits & Non Lethal!!!!! Again, we thank you! George & Greg…..
Thanks George and Greg. Comments like yours, really, are the only reason we keep doing videos. Knowing that we passed on some information that helped someone, I think, is what we are supposed to do as humans. Have a great week and very safe travels.
sure thing. we love passing on what works and what has not for us. feel free to reach out if you need anything. with T-Mobile possibly going away, we are looking into adding Calyx; which is basically T-Mobile
@@OurRoadLessTraveledWe have Calyx . It works great for the most part but if you’re not in a strong T-Mobile area it will buff a lot .It is cheaper than most other platforms and works well for us.
So glad I watched this video. Saving for later. I am planning on RV traveling in the next year. I travel now as a healthcare provider and travel with my Byrna … always! I bought it when I did a travel job in Montana and could not buy a gun there. While it’s not a gun , I still feel very safe with it.
we like it. I will say, we forgot to mention that the first thing we did was replace the lock. They are all the same and only have about 5 key variations. You can buy a master key to fit all of them on the internet. We used and RV lock that has a pin code, remote, and a backup key. Would never go without it.
Thank you so much, Maria and Clay, and to Todd and Jason, for your very informative video. I appreciate all of the advice and insight you shared. Safe travels👍🏾
Great video, and an eye opening comment! Our Constitution and our Bill of Rights were carefully crafted specifically to ensure that we were not deprived of basic rights by the English government. Canada still has remnants of the British legal system and citizens cannot own firearms, cannot own bear spray. And now we are seeing our Constitution eroded by a bunch is pansy do-gooders who create harm not good. We would love to travel in Canada - I guess we can arm ourselves with the old standby - hairspray! Any woman knows it can really hurt!.
Thank you folks. Very informative. We've been snowbirds for 3 years. Two years ago we had our clam stolen from the back on the truck at a truck stop. Right now we have motion lights but were going with camera's also. And thanks for the tip on the Byrna SD. Looking on Amazon for that now. I do have a concealed carry. Safe travels.
We hear all kinds of stories. We have friends that had their generator stolen off the back of their rig, WHILE SITTING IN TRAFFIC. Glad you enjoyed it, safe travels.
I use slim backup cameras that are designed to be mounted over the license plate but can be mounted anywhere all over the outside of my rig. They are cheap and blend in so you can't see them. They are hardwired so you don't need wifi, etc. All 12v and uses little power.
I dont know. We still own them. But we really dont go to places that would require them. Not a lot of folks having shootouts at the entrance to Bryce Canyon. WE dont do big cities, and mostly stay in rural area, with low drug rates. I appreciate your opinion though.
@@jamesyao9199 byrna.ca/pages/faq-ca. "The Byrna launchers are considered firearms under the Canadian Criminal Code, however, they are EXEMPT from licensing requirements because the Byrna has a firing velocity below 500 ft/sec (150 meters/sec)."
WE WERE IN A RV PARK IN METRO LAS VEGAS THIS PAST MARCH AND APRIL. THE RV PARK HAD THEIR GOLF CART STOLEN. ON A PERSONAL NOTE WE MAKE EVERY ATTEMPT TO NOT HAVE TO STAY IN A BIG CITY RV PARK.
Something everyone needs to keep in mind is the lack of reciprocity for concealed carry permits. And in case you didn’t know in New York State you can’t even possess a handgun without a permit so don’t rely on the fact that it may not be on your person.
New York is absolutely awful. Unless you have a NY permit, you can only transport locked, unloaded firearms “through” the state, thanks to federal law. But the moment you stop overnight, you may be guilty of a felony.
So true even officers from other states are told not to carry. However, courts have ruled they are not following federal law. You will have a legitimate 💯 defense to prosecution. What sux is they can still arrest you! And you have to get your case dismissed.
@@Viz1-txredisright in TX you are authorised to fire if you think eminent danger to life or property exists and are immune to prosecution. You are not immune from prosecution it you also hit an innocent person.
This was a great episode. As a minority female solo traveler I would love a 5th wheel but for safety I MUST be able to get from my bed to the drivers seat within seconds WITHOUT and going OUTSIDE so for SAFETY as a female solo traveler for me, my options were class B, super B class C (not a super C) just based on SAFETY. notice I left off class A.. the only one that I did consider based on SAFETY was the Axis and the ACE. they are under 30 ft ⛽ gas. But the for starters I went with a class B... (Promaster chassis) ⛽ It takes gas, I can be inside and get to the drivers seat, great on maintenance a I can always find a mechanic shop ..and simply safe system is great .
I love that you know your priorities. So many watched the video and chastised us for the decisions we made. Not everyone has the same security comfort levels. Loved hearing about yours. Safe travels.
I agree with you about discharging a firearm in a camper, however, I don’t have many security concerns in most camp grounds. But when boondocking, out in the middle of nowhere, with no one else for miles, I carry a real side arm. Your self defense gun is probably the best I’ve seen, however, it’s a lot of money. Seriously, for inside the small, confined space, a sharpened walking stick or taser would be my choice. Like your videos, hopefully this country will change course by the end of the year. FJB
Fantastic comment. I had the same concern about Boondocking. We don’t do enough of it to be a greater concern. I would be lying if I said I had not second guessed the decision.
Coincidentally I was about to ask you some questions about your comms etc. The only things I'd add for possible consideration that overlap security and emergency prep would be: 1) 3,2,1 rule backups of important and irreplaceable documents, photos, contact lists etc. that can be accessed away from the rig/home. 2) A bug-out bag in case you suddenly have to vacate the rig in a remote location. 3) First Aid kit and record of any personal medical issues. 4) Automation that can trigger other actions (spotlight cameras/lights, motion detectors, door/window open/close sensors, vibration/glass break sensors etc.) Zigbee devices can be ideal for most of this as they use very little power, don't rely on Internet access or Wifi, and are relatively cheap. 5) Pocket router that can be used in hotel rooms and other public wifi spaces if insecure wifi is the only option. I'm an advocate of the Ring cameras as there's a community of "neighborhood watch" in our area that alert people to prowlers, porch pirates, emergency service activity, wildlife and help to locate lost dogs etc.
Agree …. 3,2,1 for docs, family photos and memiries: 3 locations 2 - local meaning your laptop and an external hard drive 1 - cloud based …. BUT … not all cloud storage is created equal.!!!! You need a long-term permanent solution so that when you expire your documents, family photos, and memories don’t also expire and are deleted and not available to family. I’ve have done extensive research on this, as I’ve lost files, I thought were secure but was wrong….😢 If you are ‘renting’ cloud storage, which most people are tell me, what happens when you stop paying rent Yep, you are evicted.
Great suggestions. The video was already so long we decided not the put that stuff in. We keep a go bag in the truck along with duplicates of Stellas records and other documents. We keep the originals in a binder in a specific location. We also changed out the factory door lock on the 5th wheel. Great comment, glad you added it.
@@RVPhotoQueen Agreed, don'trely on any of your backups, and test them with the occasional restore. From my IT background, I did consuiltancy for a company that used tape backup. The first time they tried a restore they discovered the tapes were corrupted...
Excellent... Thx I'm finishing up a trip in Central Mexico. Will be back in San Diego in August/September. Buying a rig then traveling around California, Arizona, Baja Sur, dry camping/boondocking. I'll follow and learn... 😊
Great bloopers! One other thing people should change the door lock on your RV. Too many similar keys out there. We have unlocked a friends RV with our keys before. Gonna need Clay to build us one of those fancy systems..lol
I appreciate the thought given behind your security used, and the decision or preparation for where you chose to camp. 👍 Truly sad we can no longer enjoy the freedom of just feeling "free" to be.
First line of defense is situational awareness…maybe it was my time overseas but I am constantly aware of my surroundings…My 2 Cane Corso’s are my first line of security inside of my house/trailer (awake or sleeping)…male is 135lbs female is 120lbs. If the intruder has a real gun then your “less than lethal” toy won’t do much
I was in agreement with you through the situational awareness and having a dog reply. Referring to the Byrna as a toy is uncalled for. In either case, if an intruder has a gun, you still have the risk of being shot regardless of what you have.
Great info! I've been looking into getting a travel trailer soon when I retire this year. So much to research before I do and security was something I was very interested in. Great stuff! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Dave. Let us know if you have any questions. We forgot to mention the first thing we did was replace the door lock. 90% of the OEM ones use the same key.
Nice review. Can’t underscore situational awareness and smart decision making enough. We carry a Byrna. Also, we travel with Bear spray (larger canisters) for protection. Walking staffs in the right hands offers yet another degree of protection. Stay safe and walk tall!
Great info! I’m new to firearms. But my husband and I are becoming very committed. I was thrilled to learn about the Byrna. I can’t wait to add one to our newest hobby. Thank you!
Thx for the interesting video. We don't have a camper, never had. We like to look at different ones on RU-vid but won't buy one. When I listen to what you guys said, it reminds me of when we lived in South Africa😂. We always had to be aware of our surroundings and had to lock ourselves in a jail at night and actually during the day too! May God bless you and keep you safe.
Liked your video, I am looking at RVing full time and security is a concern. I too am licensed to carry and I like your alternative. Stay safe and Thank you.
From state to state is a hassle. I really wish there was a universal carry law. It makes no sense to have a 2nd amendment, but allow states to put restrictions on weapons for law abiding citizens.
good info..we actually have our logos on our stuff... all good RVers have to keep an eye out for one another total video of good stuff to know thank you for sharing
Sure thing, glad you found it useful. One thing we forgot to mention is we changed the door locks on day one. Be safe and reach if you have any problems contacting SEPI.
The people who have issues with Fire Arms that’s their problem, Period!! Bug spray with a long skinny handle is a great choice!! Great video thank you guys!!! Knowledge is power!!!
The Byrna is just a standard large (.68") paintball gun, at an obscene price. It is also a firearm according to some states, where simply "firing a projectile with stored energy" defines a firearm. Other states define a firearm as using gunpowder, and that's where the Byrna is legal. It is still a concealed weapon if you conceal it. Paint ball guns are more common and less expensive, and just as powerful, in the .50" size with a great number of paintballs, including teargas and pepper spray and a variety of soft and hard balls.
While i agree with you from a technical standpoint, I think it would disingenuous to refer to it as a paintball gun. Here is why, Paintball guns are usually a smaller round that takes less energy to project. Most manufactures and paintball facilities cap the velocity at 300fps. If the Byrna used the same size projectile it would have a much faster velocity. As it is Byrna has a muzzle velocity over 340 fps. Now I know that there are paintball guns that shoot up to 1000 fps but they are not the norm, are not the same compact size, and the cost is comparable. I don't discredit your comparison, the technology is the same, just a different fit, form, and function.
I partially agree with the concept, but when you said we don’t go anywhere that we feel we need a gun; I think that is flawed thinking because anyone would say if you are going somewhere you think you need a gun then don’t go there. But it is the malls, the restaurants or the gas stations where a crazy person demands your money or something like that where guns are helpful.
Thank you for this valuable information, we are not full-time, but we do visit State parks in our local area and we assume that they are safe, we’ve never had any problems being saved at the campgrounds we have stayed in and we only stayed two or three days but still, it only takes one day or one hour for something to occur that will compromise your safety. We are thankful for cell phones so if there was any compromising event that would threaten our safety, we could use our cell phones to call for help. I value your information and will pass it along to other people and I am a new subscriber.
@@OurRoadLessTraveled I totally agree, and this day and age we must be aware of our surroundings and the people around us and to keep ourselves safe within our homes when we are out shopping when we’re visiting friends even in our churches, we have to be cautious. We do not put our location on social media due to the fact that we were elderly, and we could be a target at a campground, and especially if a person takes photos of their campsite which we do not and posted on the social media, any person could scout out that Campground and cause harm to someone. a person should also look out for other people too, when I say look out for them, be aware of people around you, especially at a campground or even in our daily lives, someone might need help. Thank you for your insight on safety and your expertise on the RV life.
Excellent information what I do with my drone is fly it and land on top of the fifth wheel for the night. To remember in the morning to take it off the roof I set the case for it by the coffee maker.
Looked at those and the reviews say they jam and would not want to discharge that in my RV. I would use a shot round in a 38 special revolver. Unlikely that would penetrate a second RV wall.
I have not had ours jam at all. As for using a .38 I have no opinion on it. I have never owned or shot a .38. One of the other reason for going to the Bryna is its legal in all 50 states and Canada. Not sure if the barrel of a .38 is long enough to get approval to take into Canada. great comment though. Thank you for watching.
I have a CHL, and I do not like guns. But when you’re alone, boon-docking, in the middle of nowhere, be armed. There are very BAD people in this world. I’m all for non-lethal options, but I’d still keep a backup. I’ve been robbed, burglarized, mugged, and while staying in a crackle barrel overnight, I heard something and locked my truck which also turns the lights on. I didn’t see anyone, but found scratches and marks on my trucks door. Like he said, CAMERAS, I like eufy, and also trail cameras. They will video or take pictures when motion activated.
We all need to take precautions- one of my best precautions is NOT staying at Cracker Barrel, Cabela’s etc where you are dealing with more of public - not other campers. Or traveling late at night. Or….just putting ourselves in a position where I could be a target.
Thank you. we also forgot to mention that we changed the door lock. Seems there are only about 5 keys to all those locks and master keys can be bought online to get into any of the factory door locks.
Totally love this concept. Even though I do carry. However, would you be able to take it into Baja? I take it it’s a no! Since it’s illegal to bring weapons over. I’ve thought about buying the Byrna ship it to a local friend in Baja and use it while on the excursion. Not sure. I feel bare without a weapon. Lots to consider
I am like your quest. I would run cameras all around my rig whenever I get one. I too would like to know what’s going on around my rv. Mainly because I would be a solo rv’er. I may get a dog for added security so I could sleep.
Our aussie doodle is a great alarm. sometimes too good. I think whatever makes someone comfortable is the right answer. Good luck finding the right RV and hope to see you on the road soon.
Appreciate the insights. To the gentleman who got his e-bike stolen at LV 1000 trails I hear ya loud and clear on it feeling sketchy. My wife had her swimsuit stolen off a chair outside our Rv. Wasn’t a big ticket item but it was a bit creepy. ✌🏽
Not only is it creepy, its down right gross. Who steals a swimsuit. Thats like stealing someones underwear out of the hamper. Thanks for the comment, we love reading them.
The dude that doesn't want to know what's going on outside of his rig is crazy and eventually that willful denial will bite him in the butt. Just because you don't want any trouble that doesn't mean trouble won't come looking for you. So when someone is under his truck stealing his catalytic converter like what happened to another nomad, he won't even hear or see it coming... or worse.
I don’t tell anyone what we have for security. However we’re traveling through Canada next month and are leaving some things behind. I have a cousin in Anchorage that will be lending us a thing or two.
I have something similar but, deadly. 30 caliber PCP full auto airgun. Fires 16 shots in less than 1/10 of a second and over a hundred shots at full power (same power as a 22 long rifle) before needing recharge
One safety catch I have is I have a credit card used on travel with a 2500.00 cap on it. Just to keep a tight lid just in case it’s breached. I have had the horrible incident of picking up a stalker inside my phone while traveling across Nevada I- 80. The FBI recommended keep the Blue tooth off. That’s how he was able to connect to my phone. Also Facebook Messenger is a weak link and you can get into trouble with as well. Stay safe👍🏼
I’m weird.. I don’t have a key to my house . Leave the keys in the ignition of my vehicles. My entire life . Maybe I’m blessed to live in a community that that’s possible.. we go on vacation my home is unlocked keys are in our other vehicles.. even when we rv .. I don’t pull the keys on our class a never lock up .. but there’s a quiet German shepherd inside the door .. even in Michigan no one noticed the dog .
Our house in Huntsville, AL was like that. RV life is a little different as you go form community to community. Some are great, some you want to lock your stuff up.
Interesting stories. Definitely some good points. I’m liking the pepper ball pew pew. I’m thinking about a camera system of some sort. I have a lot of money in Rv security now just because people suck, maybe I’m just jaded….salty if you will 😂. I don’t think I’ll ever get an E bike. They always get stolen. TT Las Vegas is a disaster. I’d have to pull security all night. NODS, plate carrier, flash bangs 😂. Oh, when in doubt, frag out 😊 stay safe
I've been out here in my truck camper for a year and I've never had any trouble maybe it's just the places you guys are going yeah I know there's drugs out here in the area but nobody bothers me I leave my stuff out here when I go to town and get supplies nobody touches it
in the video we share that we, personally, have never had an issue at a campsite. Never had the need for a firearm, for the very reason you state. We dont stay in suspect areas. We move on and find something else.
My only concern is that if you pull the byrna out and you confront someone that does have a gun, he now has grounds for self defense especially if you discharge yours and he can recover.
I can tell you, I would never pull a real gun or a Byrna and not intend on discharging it. I know that sounds horrible, but its the truth. If you have me frightened enough to pull a weapon, I am in fear of my life, and you are getting shot. I would never pull a weapon as a deterrent. I like the comment though, its something that really should be discussed. I hope to never be in that situation.
Given that all we can do is increase our probability of safety. Main thing I get is travel incognito. Which I’ve been doing for 30 years. Cameras great idea. What about a super loud siren ? - likely would send most jackarses running. If someone has targeted me and seems set on taking me out - call 911 and turn on the loud as Fk siren. Sorry if y’all are laughing.
all good suggestions. We really dont have problems on the road. There are issues with theft in campgrounds though. We added an alarm to the 5th wheel and freaking loud sirens on the ebikes, plus we have them chained with a real chain. We also have Stella who barks that the trees moving. We did not want to start a panic, just bring awareness.
There is a lot that goes into the physics of the weapon, and a video can be made to show basically whatever you want to present. Each CO2 cartridge only provides max velocity for the first few discharges. It looses power after that. Is it perfect, no, but I have not heard of someone being accidentally killed with one. Will it do any good with the other person has a gun pointed at you, probably not. Its not perfect, but its the best solution for us at this time.
We have never had an issue with any rest stop and routinely will spend the night in them. The only one that we would not even stop at is in Baton Rouge, LA. Once was enough at that one. Its the only one, that I really thought about taking my pistol with me to the bathroom.
Bear spray is what we carry and a shotgun if it’s are family or the bad guy it’s going to be the bad guy that loses. Especially nowadays it’s more dangerous out there. Used to be .
You stated that the Byrna gun is legal in Canada. It most definitely is not - take it from a retired law Canadian enforcement officer. If caught with that type of weapon while traveling into Canada, you will be arrested and possible be imprisoned. So no, no, do not enter Canada with it.
