Thank you Nathan for explaining the notching for the sawkerf, this is great idea. I have seen Japanese saws used before but never with the explanation you gave with this video. Since I became disabled and not able to do the woodworking like your doing, even though I did many of them when I had my millwork business. In some ways, I am doing these things through watching your videos.

I learned two non-milling things from this video. One, the reason why the japanese pull saws have that wedge shape is that on the back stroke the teeth dig in better, and on the push stroke they dig in less. Brilliant. Second, and I can't believe I have never seen anyone do this or even thought of it myself, when using a square it makes sense to put your pencil on the measurement and slide the square up to it. Completely compensates for the random shape of the pencil. Thanks!

Always enjoy your videos and appreciate your efforts to make them educational. I do have a suggestion. If you place a sawhorse closer to where you are using the chisel, you will get less bounce and it will be more efficient. By the way, that is a manly chisel.

The file used to sharpen Japanese saws is called a feather-edge file. Sharpening them is definitely trickier than western saws, though, so many are like yours, with replaceable blades.

White pine is reasonably stable and that log doesn't look crooked at all. No problem running a 8-1/8" square and then quartering into four girts. If it does crown or bow, put the crown up and the bow out in the building orientation. I just run a simple diesel drip on my bands. I'm guessing your getting a Big Al slotted mortice square for you next tool?

If you watch the reflection in the saw and maintain the saw angle so it maintains the appearance of a straight piece of wood, the cut will be square to the edge you are watching. I use both Japanese and Western style saws often depending on my mood (LOL).

Hey Nate, great video! Glad to see comment about resaw, looks like some styles & rail stock. As a custom home builder in Maine & New Hampshire coastlines, we had a lot of freeze ups and if you like to eat in the winter, we would use a torpedo heater and a tarp tent to keep working. Even the masons were able to keep sand thawed and dry up concrete. Hope this helps. Mick from Hawaii

Japanese saws are very accurate. Because you never load the blade in compression, it doesn't want to buckle and wander. In tension all the time it stays nice and straight. Because it stays straight by tension you can use a very thin blade and thus get a thinner kerf and less resistance. Same thing is true of Japanese chef's knives. You cut by pulling and the thin blade stays straight.

Very off topic, but I was thinking about this when the shot of the mill was showing the tires. ...Do you do anything to prevent flat spots on the tires while it sets there? Maybe pick it up and rotate the tire a few degrees? Do you ever tow it? Just curious. ....Excellent video

*When first scribing any line with the triangle or any square or any straight edge, one can first use any thin sharp blade, such as an X-ACTO type or any carpenter's knife. (draw a pencil line afterwards if you want a visual cue to see) It produces what is sometimes referred to as a Knife Edge, which is especially good when having to do corner planing to prevent wood burs or chipping... and produces the cutting edge you were after. | Plus, old time hands will just use their same carpenter's knife (with blade retracted to only a small tip point) to hand pull a cut through the wood that you did with your chisel... much faster, but requires skill that is learned only by making the mistakes of cutting too deep or skewed.*

Finally got to use a Japanese pull saw last week, was cutting 3×3's for a headboard I'm making and my back saw went dull, so since I didnt feel like sharpening it at the moment I grabbed my dads Japanese pull saw since it's just been sitting, in the package no less, for about 3 years opened it up and used it. Needless to say my dad isnt getting it back, dont arrest me but yeah totally stealing it

If you want to do accurate marking out, you don't use a thick pencil to mark your lines, you use a marking knife - you also, as seen in your video, move the square to the marking knife, then proceed to mark your line (you can then use a sharpened, harder pencil to mark the line). Nathan, I must commend you, you're the first person I've ever seen on youtube lay your saw kerf in a prepared trough when crosscutting a board, this is a basic skill you first learn as a apprentice cabinet maker - long over due on youtube. However, may I suggest, that instead of a speed square, you use a traditional carpenter/cabinetmaker's square, they tend to be much more accurate. Lastly, I'd use a marking knife or a Stanley knife instead of a big 2 inch chisel, not everybody has a 2 inch chisel and they can be less accurate, because of the surface area, you have to strike them harder to mark your line, whereas a Stanley, you can run over the line several times, until you reach your desired depth, also its easier to be more accurate over a wider board with a marking knife/Stanley. Traditional European saws are at least as good, if not better than Japanese saws, but you have use them correctly, that is, let the saw do the work, most people try to over muscle a hand saw - any tool can be used badly, it not the tools fault, rather, its the person using it and their lack of knowledge of how to use it.
@OutoftheWoods0623
@OutoftheWoods0623 5 лет назад
totally agree for furniture, however the old timber frame guys suggest using a pencil since the tolerances are much wider, I do agree with everything you stated, and appreciate your comment,

@@royreynolds108 To us that is foreign. I drive school bus and we go no matter how bad the weather is. About 2 years ago I was bringing kids back from a basketball tournament and we had -22 for over 200 miles and thought nothing of it. We had -60 one year and got a little concerned but still went on. I guess I will just have to stay baffled by lower 48ers because I don't see myself leaving Alaska until hell freezes over.
