Comments from an Aussie. Like your video's a lot. Spent the first 20 years of my working life in the timber (lumber) industry mainly with a species called Cypress (Callitris) her in Oz. Awesome timber. As a Pine it is highly figured, more durable than hardwoods and termite resistant. I am impressed by some of the great timber you cut. Mate, I do not understand why people would choose to "Not Like" your video's? You are doing saw milling, not political or religious commentary that might upset people. I just do not get it. Wish I had access to some of the board you produce. Keep up the good work.

That is some nice pine Nathan! Most of that is furniture grade I'd say. But like you, I don't mind the knots. I've seen some very pretty grain and figures around knots. And after it ages and gets that nice brownish color, like biscuits when you take them out of the oven, it has that mellow antique look we find on old antique pieces. Thanks Kindly! Here in Pa we had temps in the 60s so I wonder if we'll get that 79s tomorrow? Hope so. Makes for great catch up time. Blessings! DaveyJO in Pa.

The opening scene- what looks like steaming trees. Twice, back in the UK, about 10 years apart I witnessed trees on the ridges of valleys, get struck by lightning and survive. I think it was a coincidence they were both ash trees but they both went from vertical main branches to bowed main branches like a weeping willow. After this, every time they were rained on, or snowed on, or there was heavy mist or drizzle, they would steam. Year after year, when ever they got wet they would have a plume of water vapor pouring off their tops. I’ve also seen plenty of steaming trees in New England but wasn’t around to see if they were struck by lightning or not.

Great looking wood. Love white pine. I will never understand why so many guys will open up a log like you did here. You spend big money on a mill with all the bells and whistles and not use the hydraulic toe boards. You measured the log already, though an eyeball estimate would suffice. It is only two cuts.

Back in the mid 1800's when they cut the Big Piney or Wisconsin's virgin mostly White Pine forest the logs left huge stumps. They were ft across. You might want to do some reading about that forest and the harvesting of it. It even led to a housing style in New Orleans called barge built where they used the milled timber that made the cabin on the log rafts that came down the Mississippi.

The speed of the cut helps the smoothness. Unlike those big wide hardwood slabs you cut,you can move right along on pine. I usually cut all the boards in a cant without declutching, then just slide the whole stack over to the edge and pick it off the mill with the forks. I work alone and it saves a lot of handling.

Interesting to hear about how clean the Diesel engine runs, especially without DEF. Maybe all the government regulations did some good? I drive Sprinter vans with turbo Diesel engines all the time, and I’m amazed how clean they run (tho’ they use DEF). The only problems we have with the DEF systems is remembering to fill the tank.
