That was a brilliant move using the AIS and plotting the ships path for safe entry into Rottnest. This was a great sailing video. You're right, dolphins never get old. 🐬 Put securing hatches on a list of items to fix. No one likes a wet bed. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the most beautiful sunset and the pure joy of being visited by dolphins! Sorry if this sounds kinda morbid , but in light of recent yachting news it just came to mind, better a wet bed than a watery grave! 🙏❤ So glad you guys have each other!❤ xx
Just to make sure you both know, it's the adventure your vids are documenting & we absolutely love every minute of it! There is no other channel like yours!!
Oh poor Chilli. Love that you guys are showing sailing destinations that are rarely if ever covered by anyone else on RU-vid. Keep up the awesome work & looking foward to more.
Poor lil Chill, don't worry, we feed her enough Whiskas to make up for putting her through sails like those 😅 Thanks so much legend, so glad to know you enjoy the content! Cheers!
Bloody great under-pressure decision to trace the ship's route into the channel to Perth. I've done heaps of offshore and that didn't even occur to me. Well done Nakama!
Fantastic video-- and good calls on dealing with those bloody cray traps!! You've demonstrated just how important it is to have a boat that can sail well to windward,.. Being a multihuller (as I know you're so keen on them yourselves.), it demonstrates you really need a catamaran with daggerboards (bugger the roomarans!) to be able to manage the conditions that Nakama handled so well.... God I hate wet beds, just what you don't need at 2am... Phil
Cheers Phil! Appreciate your kind words. Hahah, don't get us wrong catamarans have their perks! We just can't afford one so we have to make ourselves feel better somehow 😉 But yes, super glad Nakas can punch through it well, she's not so good at keeping water on the outside however 😂
Epic vid, it’s been a tough run down and makes for good content but I can imagine it takes its toll on you both especially with a wet bed just when you need it the most!! Very good thinking with the ship, genius idea!! Thanks for the entertainment
A few comments. First, the West Coast is unforgiving (as you found out). One of the main reasons, after sailing up and down the coast for 3 decades, was to take our Duncanson 43 to SE Asia. Second, the cray (lobster) pots are generally set in a north/south pattern. They tend to be worst between the Abrolhos Islands and off Lancelin (100 miles to the south). By the time you get 50 miles out, they have generally (but not always) thinned out. You probably weren't aware you need any number of permits and licences in Western Australia to fish, catch crays, and even park at Rottnest. Good on you if you had these. Even better if you didn’t. Another part of sailing in Western Australia I don't miss.
Enjoyed watching your battle heading south down WA coast as we've just done this 5 weeks ago, but we managed to hook a cray pot at night in rough conditions. Just so your viewers who may consider sailing in WA know, you are not allowed to have a domestic animal on board within the marine sanctuary waters at Rottnest or the Abrolhos. They will fine you.
Good ol' WA. Just something from an ex crayfisherman. If it's any consolation the pots are always set in lines and invariably north south. I've been trying to suss out what time of the year you're in, I guess it must be late winter/early spring. The cray season opens in November so you may have just struck the peak time. Or maybe I'm way out of touch and everything has changed.Anyhoo, Rotto is a great spot so do enjoy yerselves.
Thanks mate! Appreciate the inside scoop 😀 we started getting better at reading the charts and marking guesses at what deep reefs looked more favourable to pots but any extra info goes a long way, it’s wide how far of shore the wa cray fishery goes compared to other coasts, by the time we get a hang of it we will be on to the next region haha 😂 thanks for the additional tips
Yes quite the sail. I have noticed these lobster/crab traps are a problem every where not just in Australia. I am surprised the gov't of Australia and other countries where this is happening don't crack down on this. Like Slim suggested IAS beckon/signal of some sort. Perth I'd love to go there one of these days as I've relatives that live there. Actually I have been reminded I was there in 1966 when I was a young one, but don't recall. Yea what a weather difference just being out a few miles away from where the crab traps were. Dolphins cool, whales cool. I've noticed other boats that have there dinghy on the bow over the hatch seem to have the dinghy sitting above the hatch 6 inches or so. I guess they do it to prevent the rubbing motion opening hatch and also to prevent water from getting in. Hope the mattress isn't ruined and you'll be able to dry it out. If I remember correctly that a new mattress memory form you got not so long ago right? Great video as always. Oh yea Soph how is the sailing adventure plans going with your mother?
Ahhh Damn, I love you guys SO much ! Loved the episode - as usual - and happy y'all are safe and sound at Rotty ! Please take a selfie with a Quokka while you are there, lol ! On that glassy day I was yelling at Slim to put a line out ! That was a *perfect* day for trolling and I think the odds to catch a nice tuna to supplement the protein ration would have been very high. Anyway, take care and be safe, and thank you so much for letting me live vicariously through you two beautiful, intrepid souls ! Much love from South Carolina ;-)
Triple redundacy is always in good order. 😉 Y'alls perseverance is admirable. No pun intended. 😂 🤔 Perhaps Soph just inadvertently gave Vessi their greatest ad campaign. Fred Astaire, 'Singing in the Rain' vid, AI generated to show Fred clicking his heels in the rain, wearing Vessi shoes. Vessi, you're welcome! I'll take a pair in size 12, Imperial, thank you. 😂🤣😂🤣😂 Great vid, happy sails, and keep on keepin' on! ✌️❤️🚀🤠
Ironically, if you were to have sailed in shallower there would be less pots because the Crays are out deep. We must be very used to it over here as you made it look very difficult with the pots, but admittedly we don’t motor so it’s less of an issue.
We go through the same issue (SW Florida) with Stone Crab pots EVERYWHERE! They place them without rhyme or reason and as you well know, they can easily sink a boat after pulling up chain and ruining your running gear. When we run to Key West (approx 160nm), with many, many loud expletives. What makes it 100x worse is when the markers get covered with algae & sea slime which makes them impossible to see during the day, at night it’s Russian roulette.
Just outa high school my friends teamed up and helped me get to Nome, Alaska. I was there all summer as a volunteer and it was REALLY REMOTE back then. l You couldn't get anything fresh, and good bread was impossible to get. But, luckily, I worked all day and I and another volunteer lived in a house but had helpers there, also volunteers, and the older lady (from Minnesota ) mad fresh sourdough bread every day. I put on a few pounds ! Great cooks and helpers. Congrats to you your honor !
🤜💥🤛 Great way to start a Dreary Rainy Sunday morning, An adventure with Slim, Soph & Chili The to sides of Cray fish, Free food v's Mine fields Dolphins never get boring ❤
If you do pick up a cray pot, it's like having the best drogue/sea anchor you can find. You can hang off it, going virtually nowhere until the sun comes up. (Holding a torch in your mouth and your breath at the same time doesn't work 😢)
That was literally the most epic F#-@$&ng sunset ever videoed! Well done guys. Beautiful sale so far guys... I'm not at end of video yet. Feel like something else is coming..ok you do better than any one showing the waves. Or else your just the baddest ass sailers out there taking in scary Australian sees!
If you're still in Perth the Indian Ocean gets worse down south! Between Cape Leeuwin and Albany 12 metre seas are common in bad weather. So don't get caught out.
Would love too know how many "F" bombs were dropped off camera about the pots!!!😂. Great episode and I bet the camera didn't do those waves justice.scary shit but U made it 👍🏻
The pots should have a light on them and a name . My boat will be getting a line cutter . Any time you place a hazard to navigation then you should be responsible for any damage it causes . It there is a light and they are brightly painted , then it is the skipper's responsibility to keep watch and avoid . I am not against the fishermen , fine to earn a living but it should not endanger others when there are simple solutions available . Diving at sea at night to free a line is a nightmare . My boat has a light that is always on at anchor so I can be seen and I am a lot easier to see than a cray pot even with no light . I have a responsibility to maintain that light and there are lots of solar options now . Time to update the rules and regulations for Cray pots and private marks too .
With your lobster catch you said people pay hundreds of dollars for this. But when I was young it was not quite expensive. But with all the lobsters that you have oh my goodness that would have been 6 100 dollar bills here in America right now. How things have changed what does the future actually hold for all the human bugs on planet Earth?
You are chafing your mooring lines because you are using them wrong. You do not run the line from one cleat to the mooring and then back to another cleat. You run it from and back to the same cleat. Do it right and you will not chafe. So many boats break free because they do it wrong. I've rescued a few and been hit by one.
It's a part of my degree, I just had to do 70-100 hours with a business and then write an assignment about it...not the end of the channel at all. Just another thing to do on the side 😅
I love your series. However, maybe you should watch Jacob Knowles (2 million subscribers, a genuine good guy) who fishes for Lobsters (cray) and is part of a long line of family fisherman. Then revisit your comments on commercial fisherman ‘marking’ their trap buoys at night? You expect them to spend that amount of money..passed on to consumers..for the occasional recreational sailor? Seems incredibly naive and selfish..reality is you can and did make the transition. No one wants their livelihoods or consumer choices impacted by inconvenience. I really thought you two were way more intelligent. Safe travels.
Their comment is absolutely fine. The commercial fishermen don’t own the ocean and if the pots can possibly endanger others then why shouldn’t they have to mark them.
