Oura Ring Ultimate Temperature Test (COVID-19 Detection)

Can the Oura Smart Ring detect COVID-19? I compared the temperature measurements of this Oura Ring against morning core temperature measurements. I also checked if the Oura Ring was able to detect the periods I felt sick and had a slight fever, and if this associates with the number of white blood cells in my blood.
The Oura smart ring is being studied by the University of California San Francisco to see if it can be used as an early warning system for COVID-19, and one important measurement it is taking is temperature. If this can be done reliably, that means it has a good chance of detecting COVID-19.

Thank you for your very informative videos! I got my Oura ring in May 2018 and am also part of the TermPredict Study. I’ve been lucky to not get COVID yet, at least not knowingly, but Oura has been pretty accurate when I’ve had a cold. Apart from temperature, my resting heart rate tends to get significantly higher as well, and this has been one of my early signs. Also, I don’t think I’ve heard it mentioned anywhere, but the Oura ring has been also pretty accurate with the menstrual cycle caused deviations in temperature for me. I wonder if they have tested it as a conception/pregnancy prediction aid? Please do a video about all the numbers you track for yourself on a regular basis, for us number geeks it will be extremely interesting and useful. Keep up the great work and greetings from across the border in Switzerland!

Hi Mattikaki, thanks for commenting! So, I can imagine that it also has to do with some medical regulations, not sure. @jeroenjww
@jeroenjww 4 года назад
At 5:30 you are actually saying that your own indication of feeling sick correlates to the measurement of the ring. In other words, you could also rely on your own judgement and you do not need an Oura ring for that. However, I understand that it can confirm your judgement as it knows your average temperature and its deviation which may convince you quicker to stay at home.
@TheQuantifiedScientist
@TheQuantifiedScientist 4 года назад
Hi Jeroen, interesting! That's the million dollar question, what is the best way to detect sickness? Is my subjective feeling of being sick better than some objective test? I can imagine that my subjective feeling of being sick might yield a lot "false positives and/or negatives", in other words, I might feel sick while have no infection or might not feel sick while having an infection. When it comes to Corona the Oura ring might do better than subjective feeling, or it might be more reliable and sensitive? I don't have a definitive answer, but these are just some thoughts in response to your insightful comment :-). Een hele fijne dag!

I'm still skeptical about calculating core temperature from skin. Is there any way laypersons can validate our own Oura? (In other words, is there any other real-time, easy core temperature measurement) The eardrum method has apparently been shown not as reliable as once believed. There is the iDots thing, but that also takes skin measurements. and there used to be a capsule one could swallow that sent bluetooth temperature readings, but yeah -- expense, not rechargeable (and even if it was rechargeable, could I find it & recover it from my feces, especially if I use the toilets at work? )

Hi Max, I am using several things. The most scientifically validated is the PANAS and its short form: md.psych.bio.uni-goettingen.de/mv/unit/transformation/panas_base.html I would prefer to judge these on an 7-point likert scale, but I do it on a 5-point likert scale since my app does not allow 7. I use rTracker for iPhone to record my input. Hope this answers your question! Have a great day!

Hi. Can you please link the data you have on your ring's readings with how sick you felt so we can see how it did at prediction? The last bit about your feeling sick chart correlating with your white blood cell tests was *very interesting* but it has nothing to do with the ring. If we could take a daily white blood cell count we could do what you did without the ring by writing it down on a place of paper and making it into a chart. Do you think it will help predict covid or flu for people who get up in the middle of the night 1-6×s due to their bladder, migraine and child with special needs medical disabilities? ... and people who must get some of ther their sleep through day naps? If Oura does not tell you what your temp is, how do you know you're getting a low score because you have personal issues or because its an illness about to take over your body?
@TheQuantifiedScientist
@TheQuantifiedScientist 4 года назад
Hi Rizzobitz, I plan to share my data when we are publishing some papers about it. At the moment the data is still is various formats for each data type, so quite messy. It would indeed be interesting to see how white blood cell counts correlate with the measurements of the Oura! Unfortunately I do not have daily white blood cell count (WBC) data. For me getting WBC data meant actually having blood drawn, which is not good for your veins to do too often, so I only had this once every 3 weeks or so. Given that I have only had the Oura ring for a year, there might not be enough data to compare the two. I would expect a really high temperature will not be caused by something like an irregular sleep pattern. However you are right that the "sleep score" of the Oura and things like the "readiness score" will be influenced by these things. So just looking at that score is likely not enough to predict illness. I could imagine however building a specific algorithm based on heart rate variability and temperature that could be pretty good at predicting possible illness. This would of course always need to be confirmed, since it is just an indication. What do you think? Do you agree?
@rizzobitz
@rizzobitz 4 года назад
@@TheQuantifiedScientist Thank you. I agree looking at patterns/algorithms may be helpful predictors. Do you feel the app could be improved upon to assist in this process? Do you know when the results of your findings will be available? I ordered an Oura ring+sizers. My first ring will be for my son. He is non verbal and has health issues. I hope it will be predictive or that I will learn some useful patterns such as how supplements I give him affect his health.
@TheQuantifiedScientist
@TheQuantifiedScientist 4 года назад
@@rizzobitz Thanks for your reply! Online you can actually more easily look at different patterns and associations. About the app: I think one nice thing would be if you could add other data in there (like your subjective happiness or alertness), and see if it correlates with other things. Don't think that is possible now. I do a lot of different measurements, also weekly brain MRIs and sleep EEGs. We want to see what the effect of sleep on your brain is. I have been doing this for 2 years, and we will continue for at least 1 more. We have one extra person doing it now too. After that we write that up, it will be out for sure, but maybe I'll share some data sooner.

A german fitness youtuber who has been using the oura ring got warnings from it about raised body temperature and he felt back pain that he couldn‘t alleviate through mobilising so he took a covid test and tested positive. Of course this is just anecdotal evidence, but I found it very interesting that the ring was able to pick up on it and its warning in combonation with an owner that knows his body led to him getting tested and thus not infecting others.
