I can't believe that in VMware vSphere 7, we're still having to fix this 15 years later. I'm not sure if it's an artifact of the HP PCI bus or the way ESXi polls the bus on boot, but it's been a problem since ESX 3/3.5 and it still persists to this day. Shocked me when I hit it and there is very little documentation on how to fix it. Let me show you how I did it.

Thanks for the video. I had two integrated nics that were throwing my vmnic numbering off. I disabled the nics did the reset config, restarted host and everything was in the correct order now. Thank You

Using vmware at work for the past couple of years and now going back to ProxMox after few headaches with 7 series. This one doesn't surprise me. With ProxMox I make use of network bridges to avoid this. If the NIC name changes no big deal I just update the bridge and I'm done.

Would host profile help you on setting the previous configuration?

Possibly, but Host Profiles are their own beast that I'm not a huge fan of.

@@datacntrdude Yeah I know, I was wondering if they'd help you or making your life worse :)

I do. I’ve also got that bug where iLO4 freaks out and randomly spins the fans at 100%, so unfortunately haven’t found a fix for that yet.
