After acquiring my full set of HP servers from yet-another public surplus auction, I have found myself in complete and utter Dependency Hell. The beauty of this situation is it's a full emulation of the situation DC Ops practitioners find themselves in every day; constantly putting out fires and solving problems. In this video, we're telling the story of how we got to where we are, going over the new servers that just arrived, and outlining where things go from here. Enjoy!

Local pickup auctions are fantastic. The best deal I ever got was a 12.5tb dual node SSD storage appliance. Each node had 192gb of ram, dual 10 core CPUs, 10g SFP NIC, and a 12g SAS HBA. All of the drives still had 95+% life left. All for around $50 + $50 in gas to get it.

Where do you find these auctions? Or is it a secret? eBay is so expensive and no deals to be had. I am in Sacramento but willing to go to bay area.

publicsurplus.com is where I'm getting all my stuff. 99% of them won't ship so you have to go pick it up or arrange shipping. Check out uShip for that.

Awesome video! I wish electricity would be cheap enough in Germany to build something similar

@@bradleystannard7875 Yeah, I still hope one day people will stop accepting this crap. But until then: solar panels get cheaper every year. This year there is no VAT on solar panels up 30kWp in Germany.

HPE Proliant Gen11 is current, and hoping 12 will be less buggy.

How are you going to do audio when all of the racks are running? Or did get enough experience filming the previous clips in the datacenters?

The only thing that has had any level of intrusive volume so far has been the 500f/C250. She's a screamer. The rest are relatively mild in noise level once they idle down after boot. TBD, I suppose.

Love the video. I'm actually looking at upgrading my DS4243. Can I just go straight from the IOM3 to IOM12?
@datacntrdude
@datacntrdude Год назад
Thanks! You _can_ but it’s overkill. There’s a 6Gbps backplane in those shelves, so unnecessary.
@thezak48
@thezak48 Год назад
IOM6 is the best upgrade for them, then your shelf becomes a DS4246

Seems you're on a 2nd floor, Have you checked that your 2nd floor can hold the whole weight of all the equipment and rack?
@datacntrdude

Common question, and yes, if you consider all the weight of bedroom furniture and other things + people and pets walking and running, the load distribution isn’t too much of a concern.
