I tow my boat to southern Brittany for a cruise in company with a group of other dinghies. We sail along the coast and out to the Îles de Glénan, camping on board each night.

AVEL DRO
Do you want a boat like mine?
Avel Dro is an Ilur designed by François Vivier, and built of clinker plywood by Les Charpentiers Reunis of Cancale in 1994, which I bought in France and imported into the UK. The design is based closely on the traditional inshore fishing boats of Brittany in the early years of the twentieth century, hence her single boom-less lugsail rig and lack of a mainsheet horse, (sometimes controversial among my viewers). Although rare in Britain, Ilurs are relatively common in France. The name Avel Dro is Breton, and basically means a whirlwind.
Length 4.44 m
Sail area 12.2 m²
Beam 1.70 m
Draught 0.25 / 0.86 m
Design category C3
François Vivier's website (in English):
www.vivierboats...
Similar dinghies can often be found for sale on the website of the French magazine Le Chasse-Marée:
www.chasse-mar...
Or try Le Bon Coin, (where you can buy anything in France):
www.leboncoin.fr
(Sad note about the effect of post-Brexit trade rules, as introduced on 1 Jan 2021. These mean that Great Britain (but not Northern Ireland) residents who buy a boat in France, or elsewhere in the EU, with the intention of importing it into the UK, will have to pay VAT and other duties on the import. Fortunately there are more and more Ilurs being built in the UK).

What an awesome sail. You are so polished with your operation of the boat. Obviously from a lifetime of experience. The music was a change up, I quite liked it. Melanie Bell is such a calm singer in this tune. I would live to own an illur but I have never sailed a day in my life. Our B.C. waters are very big if caught in inclement weather and you can be stranded for days on end before being able to proceed. July 11th here was very warm also as you mentioned.

There is 4 minutes of music in a 25 min video, which is less than many of my recent videos, but it’s amazing how dominant it is because it’s a vocal. I’m still learning how to do this… I’m not certain I should have included the whole song, albeit in two halves.
@quarlow1215
@quarlow1215 3 года назад
@@RogerRoving and music is very selective. What one likes another doesn't. Some I watch use even more music and several different artists in one episode. IMO some of the crap they use spoils the experience for me because their choice is annoying. But then again, I'm kind of impartial to Rabid chipmunk tunes. Your choice was great, again IMO.

Gosh; your approach to the slipway at the end was a tutorial. Now subscribed, and bought the book. Having built a pair of trad wooden luggers on a course in Falmouth, a few years ago, I have fallen for the simplicity of the rig, and being older and less flexible, I further appreciate a boomless rig. You've rekindled my interest in small(ish) boat sailing, so; thank you.

I love your videos, I'm hoping to build myself a cruising dinghy this summer as it has been a dream of mine since I was a kid. Looking at plans for a 14 footer with a 5 ft. Beam. I'll be 70 by the time I get started. I never sailed before, but we have some nice bays and I will get my learning curve on them around Panama City, Florida before I venture out into the gulf. Your sailing rig looks like a dipping lug. That or a balanced lug is what I'm thinking for my build. I watch you drift thru the boats, and I'm amazed at your skill at the helm. Enjoy your life Roger.

Very lovely. It looks as if a red Beetle Cat has made its way to France? Might be worth a closer look some time. The Beetle celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2020. Ir remains a popular one-design class in southeastern Massachusetts and some hardy owners do camp cruise in them. A history of the Beetle appeared in WoodenBoat magazine last year.

You're crazy Roger!! Am enjoying every minute of your latest video. One minute sipping a scotch, and the next roaring along with a following wind! Not that they are related! You mentioned British Columbia and weather. It's not cold here in Vancouver Island, but a charming 22c. We gloriously benefit from the Pacific Ocean's westerly winds, and have clear skies, unlike the balance of the province experiencing terrifying wild fires. Even across Canada wild fires are causing havoc, not to mention California's fire crisis. I mention all this as your stories bring comfort and sanity in this changing world. Have you actually moved permanently to France? If you have, it appears to be a seamless process!? The stern mounted camera brings much enjoyment for me , as I miss my 22' sloop. An annoying vertigo condition doesn't help for comfortable sailing! Thanks for these continuing video gifts! Rodney Vancouver Island BC

I have wanted a boat for years. I am now 72 I have a son who is 27 who does not share my desire for a boat! I was once going to buy a canal boat but the sales team at the boat yard ignored me even though i has the money to make the purchase? I then had the idea of buying a two seater inflatable canoe to sail on the disused Cromford canal Derbyshire. non starter my son now 27 was not interested! So I am left watching you doing what is a very enjoyable hobby! PS what is the name for your boats sail with no wooden beam at the bottom of the sail?

On the map (I am in Australia so vicariously enjoying your summer and not familiar with the area) it looks like a vast expanse of open water/Atlantic ocean, yet in the video it looks like a mill pond. Is it usually that placid or were you just lucky with the conditions? As you are using a GoPro I assume it isn't just that you can only easily film when it is smooth sailing?

It can be rough, and there is generally more of a swell, but there has been a long period of quite moderate winds recently that have calmed down the ocean.
