Thanks for another well done review... I currently have a NiteRider Lumina 1800. It projects a ton of light, that happens to be great for off road and mountain bike riding. However, for urban or commuter road bikes there are issues. Because the light is a like a shotgun spray, the light goes everywhere, including the eyes of oncoming traffic and pedestrians. A well designed light with a cutoff beam will direct the light towards the roadway, with little light spill and glare to effect others. I recently stumbled on to the Detour. It appears to check off my wish list boxes, for urban night riding. Those boxes includes a cutoff beam with a decent about of power, USB-C port, and well designed mounting options. I will be upgrading to this light soon.

I ordered the light today and hoping to test it this weekend just in time for daylight savings with the earlier evening times.

Nice. Have fun with the light. With daylight savings right now it's dark by 5 so it's easy to get caught out in the dark.

@ilovephotography1254

@@ZioComposite I wanted to love the light, however that was not in the cards... I live in an area that's hilly. It's common for me to go downhill past 30mph. With that speed at night, I need a light that can be projected well beyond where I'm going. In addition, the light uses 2 differing types of lenses. The effect was distracting and not pleasing to my Aging Eyes. Maybe the problem happens to be my eyes? I contacted Outbound Lighting for the return. They were great about it and they paid for the return shipping. They are a first rate company to do business with. Let me know what you think, I hope that the light works out better for you. I Wish You Best of Luck.

Nice review, I'd be interested to see you review the new Trek commuter pro/comp RT lights if you get a chance, they have a beam cutoff too but I haven't actually seen a real world review of one yet.

Great suggestion. Even Trek's promotional videos don't even show good shots of the beam. We'll try to get our hands on one.

3:16 - that is not a "projector style lens" It is two shaped/faceted reflectors that give you the car headlight style beam cutoff.
@TheSweetCyclists
@TheSweetCyclists Год назад
Yes, good catch. You can see the comparison with the NACA Road which has a projector lens that has less artifacts than the Detour.

Any updates on how the mount has performed after several months? I’d really like to order one of these but I already have a Lezyne that I have to fiddle with during my commute, I don’t want to spend double the money and end up messing with the angle of the light.
@TheSweetCyclists
@TheSweetCyclists 6 месяцев назад
Sorry, I didn't see your comment until now. After more than a year use, the mount still works well. It's still not that intuitive to install or remove compared to standard Garmin mounts, but it doesn't have any play and still works well.

I'd like to see you compare this light to Magicshine's Ray 2600 which you reviewed last year. While it doesn't have the sharp cutoff of the Detour the Ray 2600 does have a good near/far light distribution resulting from a similar two lens approach (though admittedly with a much less sophisticated reflector design than the Detour's). Most importantly the Ray puts out a lot more light than the Detour for significantly less money. I rather like the Ray 2600's beam profile and it's currently my favorite headlight for road riding, but I haven't tried the Detour. I would value your comparison.

Would like to have seen how it actually mounts the handlebar and how it can be tightened or not. Or is there a specific sized bar it needs.
@TheSweetCyclists
@TheSweetCyclists 9 месяцев назад
The handlebar mount works with 31.8mm (using the included shim) or 35mm handlebar diameters using a single bolt. There is a simple thumbscrew on the side that lets you adjust the angle of the light relative to the mount.

I have both road and trail edition and each has 2s2p power pack which lasts me a good few rides before I have to charge em, I guess ob guys are cutting cost on this one with integrated battery pack, But I see they are not skimping on the glass and led which is a relief. Also can u run this light directly via power bank which also raises the question of this light being 5v based!!!! Instead of ones I have which are 7.4v and I was told by ob boys I can use anything from 7-14v no problem….

what is a good light with a really wide beam but has cut off. I have a RN1500, but its to narrow (the beam), and the cateye 1100, is all over the place and leaves glare..

@TheSweetCyclists 6 месяцев назад
The Outbound Detour seems like the best option for you - it's a wide lens with beam cutoff. Otherwise there is the Trek Commuter Pro RT or Magicshine EVO 1700 but I'm not sure if they are wider than the Detour.

Was looking to buy this on the Black Friday sale this year, but it's a whopping $84 to ship to Canada. Hard pass for me when the price is already well over $200 with the exchange rate.
@TheSweetCyclists
@TheSweetCyclists 9 месяцев назад
That's a lot to pay in shipping. It looks like Outbound Lighting does have a few Canadian stores that carry their lights - www.outboundlighting.com/pages/store-locator. If you can find one local to you, you could avoid the shipping fees. Otherwise, you might want to consider the Magicshine EVO 1700 or Trek Commuter Pro RT which also have sharp beam cutoffs.

Issue is none of these lights beat cheap Chinese lights of 2000 lumens that also have 4 hr battery life at 2000 lumens. I have one of these , brand name is Lifefan, Its so bright I can immediately feel my fingers getting hot when I block the light.
@TheSweetCyclists
@TheSweetCyclists Год назад
Although there are a lot of bright cheap lights on the market most of them lack customer support, long-term reliability and beam cutoffs. If you don't need the beam cutoff design, there are plenty of Magicshine lights that are brighter for similar price points with great customer support.

Also I wish they made it with a on/off lockout. We all know those fins won’t prevent accidental battery discharge while packed in a bag… Don’t be so nice. We need you to tell others this type of stuff.
@TheSweetCyclists
@TheSweetCyclists Год назад
The Detour actually has a ridge around the power button to avoid the need for a lockout mode (something that can be very confusing if you forget about it). Outbound tried to keep the user interface as simple as possible. This should work for most use cases - but if you have something small and pointy the light could still be accidentally turned on.

The combination of beam cutoff + replaceable battery is tough to find in the market. If you're okay with a simple soft-beam cutoff some of the Fenix lights could work for you as they have more of a flashlight design.

A side-by-side double-cup with both cut-off design is never a good idea for a STVZO/cut-off light. A correctly designed big cup can project a better light field than two small cups side by side. In the cut-off bike light catlog, German is the leader currently. Compared to Outbound Detour, e.g., Busch + Müller Ixon Space has a *way* better light field: much more evenly distributed into a longer and much wider stage. It can be purchased at 120 eur locally. At 60 eur, there is treklock LS660 and BM Ixon Rock, still, with longer, wider and more even field, or Sigma Sport Aura 100 Link from UK (front+rear light), with a longer and more even field. If you have a lot of money to burn, Lupine SL AF or AX is the way to go. An evenly distributed large light field is more pleasure to human eye for road use, even with slightly less light luminous flux. With Ixon Space, 180 lm out of the lens (60 lux level) is enough for commuting, or with 300 lm out of the lens (100 lux level) is enough for racing speed, even at descending. I mentioned "out of the lens", because there is at least 20% loss after the opticals, depending on the design for the cut-off and light field. Ixon Space have a 750 lm Osram LED set, but it can only project ~450 lm out of the lens when the LED works at 100%. For MTB use, it's a different story, as you need light for higher space and 300 lm out of lens would be not enough, since the same amount flux is distributed into larger space, thus less density. I'm not sure if you set up the light correctly to optimize the range and the cut-off, but it really looks like a bad light in your video, compared to EU products. US dealers should really import more good lights from EU.

The Sweet Cyclist did a review of the Lupine lights a while ago. The other lights that you mentioned sound great. To my knowledge those European lights are not that available in the US. That being said, one can go on the Amazon Germany website. As far a the width of the Detour being wide, from what I understand that offers a better field of view around corners.

Both lights with cutoff seem to have too big of a hotspots. Best halogen lights have a small hotspot right at the cut-off line with gradually decreasing intensity. This way the light can be adjusted for the best throw and less bright nearfield for preserving the distance vision. The lights also should have high cri emitters with good r9 value so that the light doesn't look blue at lower settings due to Purkinje effect. Since XD comes in 90cri and 3200-3500k then it can be reflowed by anyone with too much time on their hands when needed. Not sure about the other light. Reduced blue content in the spectrum also helps to minimize glare and scattering of the light while being softer on the eyes due to overly high contrast between darkness all around you and light at the front since we know that it's harder for the eyes to focus on the blue light. High CCT works only when the light is really bright (Khruithoff curve) and comes from all directions like during the day (sun+sky) or in a rooms with evenly distributed ceiling lights. Fenix bc35r (XHP50) and bc25r (xpg-3 with a horrible tint shift or 95cri SST-20) which are rarely reviewed for some reason compared to Fenix bc21r also have more or less acceptable beam patterns with some modifications to reduce the brightness of the nearfield and both have easily reflowable emitters. Fenix bc35r is only somewhat usable as a high beam due to floody hotspot (even with dedomed XHP50) and remote whith a momentary push button which allows to flash oncoming cars to dip their beam. Fenix bc25r is usable as a low beam with dedomed SST-20 for brighter an narrower top part of the layered beam if one adds some diy remote.
