Let me be clear --- the easiest way to get clams is to buy them in the store! But, if you want to spend some time outdoors and get a workout, pick up a clam rake and give it a try!
One time when I was a kid my parents took the whole family clamming. We had a blast. Only problem is the bags we used were garbage bags and my dad had two bags tied to his belt loops. Lucky for us my sister was a strong swimmer because otherwise my dad would have drown that day. I only recently realized how close a call it was.
We have a saying in medicine -- See One, Do One, Teach One. I'm guessing it's a little more refined in your industry, but this is sometimes a literal thing in medicine, lol. It was literal for this video, too. A few channels that I follow from over in NJ go clamming on occasion so I bought a rake and went out once before I filmed this video.
@@fatherandsonsfishing We actually learn the same thing when getting a flight instructor certificate. At the time, I thought the stuff I was leaning was so dumb, but I find myself using that info all the time now.
I much prefer to kneel in the water and feel with my hands than use the rake. I usually leave that for the kids. But clamming is definitely a good time and you got a nice haul there. Try throwing them on the grill too as an alternative to steaming them on the stove. 👍🏻
The grill is absolutely going to happen soon (although I've since filmed two other clamming videos yet to be posted, and both sans grill)! I like your kneeling technique, John. That sounds like it would still be a lot of work, but the physics seem more favorable than the rake... and I'm getting to the age where I need the physics to be more on my side...😳😎
So amazing sharing, thanks to sharing good afternoon have a great wonderful day happy weekend, I watching her until the end tamps heart done and stay safe and god bless
175 an hour seems hard to believe! What general part of the island would you recommend I explore? And what do you mean about raking clams, isn’t that what I was doing?
I have never clammed before Randy but always thought you do it at low tide and above the water line looking for the water hole in the sand but like I said , never done it before. Were you just blind digging or how did you know where to dig. Regardless you did well 🤙. And they sure do look like some tasty goodness. ✌️
It's definitely something fun to try, esp if you have a vehicle with 4x4 drive. I'm sure you probably know, but the KDH and NH beaches allow driving in the off-season, but in my opinion the southern beaches are better since you hardly see anyone else around.
I want to try clamming, especially after watching your video. but as you've said, it looks like a good workout and will take some time. so I'll skip for now. haha
Randy I have never done this before but now you have peaked my interest. Where does one go look for plans as far as the Shoreline? Is the clamming better at high tide or low tide? Man those things look delicious!! Great video brother, y’all have a great weekend!!
@@fatherandsonsfishing found an interesting one made with butter knives at Hatteras Jack's my son had a good time rounding up some clams at the Outer Banks they were the saltiest briniest best clams I've ever had in my life
You should be able to find clams year round. If you have a pair of waders, you should be good to go anytime, but it's definitely more comfortable when the water temps are warm!
