Outer Banks: The one where everything went wrong

Sometimes as we travel, things don't end up going exactly as we planned. Our recent trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina was a good example of that. We weren't sure until the evening before the trip that we would even be able to go spend a weekend in the Airbnb we rented on Hatteras Island. We did end up going on the trip, but nothing went according to plan along the way. Join us in this video to see why plans were abandoned on our weekend OBX getaway - and how we had a good time anyway. Stay tuned to the end because we did check out a few cool things on our final morning on the island that we want to share with you!

Too bad about the weather Jack and Alice. You're right that there's absolutely nothing you can do about it but make the best of it! While we've never experienced something quite like this we had rented an Airbnb in Panama City Beach (one block away from the beach) 4 winters ago for the winter beginning in December. We watched on TV in October just prior to that as Hurricane Michael hit just south of there as a Category 5 in Mexico Beach. This was early enough to cancel but after talking to the host his condo suffered very little damage and we went anyway. We loved it but saw such a horrible aftermath just to the south. 100's had died and most of the homes were completely destroyed. It made us thankful for just how lucky we were. We were down again just last winter for a while and some of the damage remains today.

We were very fortunate that we just had to deal with changing our plans and not with much worse circumstance like people who lost their homes… or in the case of your experience in Florida even their lives. It helps put things in perspective. We are appreciative for the gifts of life and time and travel. Thanks for watching!

We were staying in Buxton when a strong nor’easter hit. No electric for 4 days with 3 kids and there was no way to leave island.we played uno,board games and went horseback riding. Some our best memories were made that week. Remember, a washout in Hatteras is better than being anywhere else in the world

Oh no, what horrible news hear before your trip! At least you weren't stranded there, I think that would have been worse. OBX-Opoly seems like a fun alternative to tv. Makes for a good memory! And you get to go back! I remember Nights in Rodanthe, I read that book and saw the movie. Ending the trip at the beach is always a great idea. Thanks for sharing your journeys!

Well that was quite the trip! I remember hearing about that Nor'easter in May and thinking at the time "It is really late for the east coast to get a Nor'easter." And the cable cut made it even that much more interesting! I have never been to the Outer Banks, but I want to visit someday. That was a great story. It might have been a bit frustrating at the time, but you are definitely going to remember it!

We are very familiar with the sound of rain (& hail) hitting window air conditioners because that's all we had at our old house. We are very thankful that we have central air at our new house! You probably remember that I found the Outer Banks to be more of a headache than it was worth, and after hearing your story, I have to question how long the Outer Banks will be a viable vacation destination. I fear climate change will hit it hard.

Yeah, we have lived in homes with window air conditioner units before. I think the big difference is we never had one so close to where we slept. Like the window was right next to our beds at the end where our heads were. And the rain was coming down really hard. The rain would stop and start repeatedly through the night. It made sleep difficult. Yeah, I don't know how long it has left. They are actively moving beach houses back further from the beach. But that is a complicated and expensive process. They also have been dredging up sand out in the ocean and relocating it to the beaches. But you can't just fight nature like that for very long and win. We at one time had discussed moving to the Outer Banks someday. But that isn't happening now that we have learned more about it. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Yeah, it is pretty amazing what a storm at sea can do along the coast. And this wasn't even a hurricane-strength storm. We had a lot working against us but ended up having a pleasant weekend after all. Futuro houses look very interesting. I would love to tour inside one of them some day. We are thankful to be safe. And thankfully the houses that washed into the ocean were unoccupied at the time. We were able to find some fun things to do despite the weather that we will talk about in our next video. I feel like your channel is most known for your outer banks video as people know the weird and wacky for our channel. Crazy the weather before you went. You guys are brave going through. I have Verizon and love it but can’t be good if the cord was cut. What an adventure. Our family loves board games also. I really liked the story telling here. I love those UFO houses. I would love to have one in our backyard.

Yeah, the Outer Banks videos and Virginia Beach videos do the most views on our channel. I guess it is great to have a niche. We do love the Outer Banks! This trip was a little different though. But we ended up having a good time anyway. I would love to find one of those UFO houses for rent as an Airbnb. I would love to stay in one for a few nights. Not permanently though. It was very strange being cut off from everyone. And very quiet. We were a little worried about what we would do if we had an emergency in the night and had no way to call 911 since we didn't know where a hospital was and didn't have access to Google Maps. But thankfully, that wasn't a problem. Our adventure turned into a pleasant weekend by the time it was all done. Thanks for watching and commenting!

1:58 OMG !😱 One disaster after the other 😱 I am not a fan driving in the rain. Just as well the internet was restored the next morning. Aww sorry to see your trip was not as you hoped or planned. But like you said you made the best of the situation. We have had to do the same, because weather is so unpredictable :) "You can plan your plans but you can't let your plans plan you" lol I heard that from a kids tv show my kids watch. Its crazy about the no cell, or wifi or land line service, but glad it did get restored! The monoply game looked fun, so neat it was centered around your location!

It was very sad to see those houses fall into the ocean. Thankfully they were unoccupied at the time. Because those homes are along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, the National Park Service has been having to work on the clean up. Very sad situation. We were able to salvage a pleasant weekend out of the trip even though we ended up not going to any of the sights we made plans to see. The Outer Banks are within driving distance of our house so plans are already in the works for our re-do trip. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Yeah, the Netflix show is set in the Outer Banks of North Carolina where we were visiting - though it isn’t actually filmed there. We have been fortunate to not have too many problems with the weather in our travels. But it does happen sometimes. We ended up having a pretty good weekend even though we changed all our plans. The UFO house was pretty cool to see. Would love to see the inside of it. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Yeah, I would hate to have to evacuate from an oncoming storm by leaving on this one road out of the OBX. I suppose it is good that you usually get several days warning that a storm is on its way to give people plenty of time to leave. We can't wait to check out Ocracoke. Soon! So sad people lost their homes or beach house. And that storm looks terrible! I didn’t know AirBnB had a cancellation policy like that 😥 I can see how you were worried about your trip. Sorry you had weather like this to start though! Interesting their was one cable for the internet and cell service. Nice to have those board games haha! Love the “is this really a good investment?” Haha. The sound of the rain is crazy! I can see why it was hard to go back to sleep. Happy to hear the cell service and internet was back up and running the next morning! I remember the movie Nights of Rodanthe haha, so funny how expensive it is to stay in lol! CORRECTION: When discussing the film Nights in Rodanthe that was filmed on Hatteras Island in the Outer Banks, we mentioned that the film starred Kevin Costner and Diane Lane. It does not. It stars Richard Gere and Diane Lane as you can see in the movie poster shown as we discuss it. It has been years since we saw the movie and we mixed up the actors - and then didn't notice that fact even after grabbing a screenshot of the movie poster to use in the video. Anyway, apologies! Nights in Rodanthe is a 2008 movie starring Richard Gere and Diane Lane that is based on a Nicholas Sparks novel. Thanks for watching!

We were hoping we didn't come off sounding too precious in our description of the weekend. We have lived in homes with window air conditioning units before. But the unit in the bedroom was right next to our bed and the rain was coming down hard. So it was very loud right next to us. The Outer Banks is a beautiful area. This is the first time we ever had our plans fall apart there. We are looking forward to going back in a few weeks to share it with you in better weather. Those UFO houses do look cool! With the tiny house craze going on, someone should definitely take up the cause of these little houses. They might not have been well regarded 50 years ago, but I bet a lot of people would like them now. Thanks so much for watching and for taking the time to comment!

It's a bummer there was so many problems prior and during the trip but like you said, it could have been worse and was for those who lost their homes all together. It's funny how helpless we feel without our phones now. It's not so many years ago we functioned without instant gratification of a phone call or text. The sand level on that walkway down to the beach was crazy. The editing on this video is excellent.

You are so right. We are all so used to living online now that having no phone or other devices did feel like an emergency. But we made the best of it and enjoyed the night. At least the power lines didn't get cut. The power lines did get cut to the islands in 2017 and it took more than a week to restore electricity. That would be much worse! And the people whose homes fell into the sea did have it worse. Although even then, there were mitigating factors: They were vacation homes so the owners did not live there full time. News reports did list at least one of the homes as abandoned. They usually know it is coming as the sand erodes incrementally then a big storm finishes it off. The homes really can be moved further inland - but that is expensive. Apparently, letting your home fall into the ocean is less expensive. But yeah, we once considered moving to the Outer Banks some day. We are content now to just visit. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Excellent video! This was epic! Despite all the setbacks, it sounds like you got a really good time out of this trip. Sometimes you just have to roll with the punches and often you will have a great time, even if not exactly what you had in mind. The adventure aspect of traveling is always there. I'm really hoping to take a trip to Wilmington and Pleasure Island soon. It's been a while.
