I never did either I just picked the ball up and launched......and that's why I'm watching the video instead of playing.

I use the step behind for ground balls but on routine fly balls, I discovered that I could camp behind where the ball would come down. I could then start the crow hop process with a ton of momentum and speed. The release was so much faster and on target to mow someone down on a tag-up.

I like that approach, Colin!

I actually did the same thing!! Fly balls, I started the crow hop as soon as I was able to get the ball in my glove. If I needed to thro to a baseman. I did the step behind, except for throwing a base runner out at home plate from the outfiield where hitting the cutoff man would take longer. Then, I would field the ball and crow hop throw to home plate from mid outfield.

I think if you watch more closely you will notice the step behind is used more on base hits that the outfielder is getting in quickly to a cut off man or base. The step through will take a bit longer but if done correctly will generate far more velocity on the throw. See Ender Inciarte, he almost does a cartwheel from the momentum he generates stepping through. Just my opinion. I enjoy the videos. Keep up the good work.

Real Talk you’re right. Check out Yoenis Céspedes outfield assists on RU-vid. He does the step behind technique always and he has a gun from left

In kinesiology the term Cro-hop is known as a cross-step. Your step behind uis known as a Drop-step. A Crow -hop allows your arm to arrive to length at the same time your glove foot plants making it much faster.

I think the crow hop is faster thrown a couple people out from center using that

The crow hop's advantage is the amount of momentum which can be placed behind the throw and the fact that an outfielder can gain up to 10 feet by hopping OUT toward the target and not merely hopping UP. So... more momentum (force) and less distance: two factors which override any perceived time savings of those using the step behind. Additionally, on fly balls... with practice, an outfielder can actually gather himself and time his crow hop to be landing at the precise time he is making the catch, thereby negating any perceived time savings using the step behind. Several reasons why I use and coach the crow hop.

Exactly! Very well said MM. Coach Justin thank you for the video, I think it's great what you do for the youth or other coaches looking to coach up their players. RespectfuIly, I feel this approach should be a fact and not a preference. Crow hop if done correctly is best method. I've run this on practice against a back step and its unnanomous like Mariano Rivera 100% HOF vote not like Derrick Jeter 99%. What I've found is you get way more distance on throw and ball eventually will get to destination faster. There is a delayed right step (as a righty) when mastered should just give you enough time to exchange pre explosion throw with no issue. I'd try it out using time and distance in factor, I measured from point you field ball. I know some might not like this one but I'll say it, I've found, taller players benefit even more which I figure should be from the additional ground they cover on their step. This is comparison done by same player and the variance difference on throw. Keep you the good work, I enjoy your videos.

Many pro players are going back to play ball on inside of glove foot or play it on the inside of throwing foot. What do you think of that?

I always preferred the crow hop as a way to load up my legs to launch my hips. The step behind always twisted my hips... just my preference...

Ultimate Baseball Training definitely feel more awkward with the crohop as opposed to the stepbehind. For real though coaches don’t care which 1 of the 2 techniques you do as long as you make plays in the outfield?

hard to teach this to very young kids. they just dont have the footwork,
@TrukNLife316
@TrukNLife316 2 года назад
Come naturally. It’s teachable but only kids that really like baseball will learn. That’s when you start noticing who has talent and who doesn’t but hey as a coach I imagine you can only do what you can. Kids will learn eventually. Some will learn it very quickly even on the first try.

@@TrukNLife316actually you're wrong bro... I didn't get shown until 7th grade year. I learned on my first try, I coached little league after college and kids were desperately trying but they don't have the hand to feet coordination. I finally stopped trying to teach them. These were 11 and 12 year olds.

Like you said there is no right or wrong answer, as far as the crow hop goes it is difficult to get straight up if you field off the outside of the left foot. After time and many clinics they started teaching fielding with right foot out, so you can take a half step left then right for crow hop. No one that knows much (or if your 55+ in age) teaches left foot out crow hop anymore.

With the crow hop, you get the power from the hop and keeping yourself orintainted until you rotate as you throw.

Pro tip, pick the ball up with your right foot forward for a right handed player. Allows the player to bend down easier and transition into a crow hop or cross step much easier

I like the crow hop at a longer throw because I can generate more momentum and make a stronger throw. If I'm making a shorter throw I usually do a step behind. This is what came naturally with no coaching or training on either technique. I never had to analyze my swing or fielding the way it's done now. I think if I grew up in this era, my development would be stunted by over coaching. Athletes figure it out.

@chadblackburn6974
@chadblackburn6974 Год назад
See I think the opposite. I've done both for many years, and if you do the step behind method, then you close your shoulders off and my throw has been off a lot more. not to mention you don't generate near as much momentum
@Shoottokillcrew
@Shoottokillcrew 11 месяцев назад
Bingo!!!! Step behind does not have the same velocity and it tends to cause the throw to tale off because your shoulders usually are not lined up with the target.
