Well, I think the difference is that L wanted to be absolutely sure without a doubt that it was light. He seemingly gives him a lot of opportunities to prove he’s innocent, and slowly gains trust for him and starts believing in him
@ULTRANERD237 Near could have earned that "plot armor" status, but L had already done everything Near needed to do to earn it. He acts like he did something jaw-dropping when all he did was follow the instructions left by L. He may be legitimately brilliant, but he is standing in the shadow of someone so much better that he has no chance to do anything of note. The thing where they rewrote the death note in a single night is just bullshit though. That's simply not possible.
And L's biggest problem is that the author decided to add memory loss AND memory restoring qualities to the Death Note just to prevent Kira getting caught

You’re right, trusting Mikami is what got him caught but it’s not cause Mikami was a dumbass. He just played the role of Kira too well. Him and Light were both the perfect embodiment of Kira so naturally they would think and act in the same way. The fuck up was Mikami deciding to act in the exact way Kira would about Takada, not realizing Light was gonna take care of it himself

People here saying Mikami got him caught but really what got them to this point in the first place and like 90% of why Kira lost here is cus despite everyone ignoring L's suspicions and even getting "proof" from the cheif that Light wasnt Kira, N basically just said "trust me bro" and all of a sudden half the task force switched sides and started investigating Light
Yeah, people forget that the whole point of light's and L's standstill was that they both knew they just didn't have the definitive proof/real identity to take the final step. Near just skipped that part.
To be fair, by that point enough had happened that warranted suspicion against Light. So when a deciple of L comes along with the exact same conclusions and theories as his predecessor - whom the task force trusted with their lives - considering the possibility became easier. On top of that, Light's ego and arrogance at "beating" L caused him to believe he was untouchable, which ultimately led to his defeat.

Light's biggest mistake was going overboard from the start. If he just killed a few people here and there, nobody would even think of anything supernatural happening.
True and he also did it way too quickly between kills which obviously would only have him get caught faster plus in the anime ryuk says that any time before the persons actual death should be fine so light could’ve just had them die a year later or more and maybe just get rid of the book where no one can ever find it perhaps?
But that was what Light wanted, he wanted people to notice something supernatural was happening, recognize there must be some supernatural being killing bad people and decide to behave better

That wasn’t even his biggest mistake. He could have gotten away with crazy mass murder. The issue is that he let L provoke him. It should have been impossible track Kira’s location given the fact he was doing the murders remotely.
He needs people's names and faces, and he's up against genius detectives who don't reveal their names. It takes Shinigami eyes to reveal L, Mello and Near's names. That probably made it more difficult for Light.

He really wouldn't have been if he just ignored L in the first place. But bro wanted him DEAD so he made plays to get close to L, revealing crucial information in the process. I mean, Light had a frickin notebook of death that no one's knew or could prove the existence of, yet he still lost in the end because of his ego.
The appearance of Near and Mello is actually pretty smart though. Having a successor for someone as smart as L is really necessary when the world is so dependant on him. Its not about successing L, but successing what symbol L bring with him. But ppl are too attached to L alr

Light could have avoided all this by flying under the radar for a while and using his power to organize people under him, essentially pulling a court of owls and creating a hidden organization that helps him fulfill his goals.
He could've avoided basically everything by never trying to kill L and not using information from this dad's police files. L figured out exactly what region Light was in, and where the information was leaking from.
L knew he was kira.. L's only fault was that he wanted a friend who could be his equal in a world of absurdity. Near had the case handed to him on a platter.
Light was never L's equal. L only won because he had literal magic, a death god, and a 2nd magical person on his side. And L still deduced the truth in record time. On a level playing field, L would have intellectually danced circles around him.

P.S. - he didnt even use one of his death note which was buried under the ground the whole time he only used to get rid of its ownership

Ehh I mean the show after L's death felt kind of rushed, can't really compare all the crazy deduction process he did at the beginning with the localized video of the prison inmate pretending to be him with what Mellow and Near did.
This feat that they pulled off is insane and is impossible. 1. They had to break into the vault leaving absolutely no evidence of being their and find his box with the death note 2. They would have had to copy many many names that both light and his goon wrote in the book for the years they've operated. 3. It had to be copied perfectly studied since it always went under inspection 4. They only had like 20 hours to accomplish it all.
@@bait5257I'd like you to point those out. Light literally set up everything over time, worked through it through days.. weeks.. months in some cases. Near broke in, made a copy to perfect detail and put it back in 20hrs? No planning time? That's plot armor. That's called a deus ex machina in a nutshell.
Would the notebook even have that many names? I always assumed that once light got finished with a page, like when it was filled or something, he would simply rip it out and burn it to get rid of evidence.
That's what Near had also investigated himself. L and Near both said that the Kira lets his emotions get the better off him. That was probably the last straw for Light.
If you really read the manga thoroughly, then you knew. L didn't knew Light was the Kira, L suspects it.. and try to investigate the evidence for it. That's the whole point for the plot collecting puzzles when each hints and clue were found after someone's death. That is why it puns the death note.
The difference between L and Near is that L needs to be 100%... that is why even though almost all arrows point to Light, L still couldn't say that he is Kira... because he wants to be 100% accurate first... where as Near doesn't need to be... Also, M's sacrifice is what really brought the downfall of Light...
If Light had been a real G. He would have written him name in the book a long time ago. "If my identity is ever revealed, I would die peacefully on the spot."
Near may have shut the case but don't forget, L was not only the smartest character in the series, he also knew beyond a doubt that Light was Kira. Unfortunately, he had his own personal flaws that caused him to "lose" by technicality.
near's victory was probably the biggest bs moment in anime history.when the greatest detective in the world told them that light is kira,they refused to believe him.but this antisocial pos shows up and suddenly they feel like actually doing their job and catching light ?
Or maybe when the world's greatest detective...AND the world's 2nd greatest detective both come to the same conclusion, you take it a bit more seriously?
L never stated that Light was Kira even thought it was obvious to him. He knew it was him, but he didn’t have any hard evidence on him so he wasn’t willing to just get him locked up. That’s the difference between Near and L. Near wasn’t as great a detective as L, but he got stuff done. He wasn’t waiting on evidence or suspicion. He suspected Light without any reason and went after him purely on a hunch. That was an intentional decision. Whether or not you think it was a good decision is another thing, but I think it adds to the message and meaning of the story in a good way.

He didn't outplay Light, he simply came across the fact that Mikami had another Notebook because he went against Light's orders and since Mello kidnapped (the woman) and mikami brought out his notebook to kill her.
Probably an unpopular opinion but I really like Near and the fact he beat light. Like I know a lot of people think he’s not as good as L and L should have won or whatever but it makes sense Near won he was Ls successor and succeeds where L failed. L made it far to personal his need for it to be Light and his inability to work well and openly with others who he felt were less than him was his ultimate downfall. Near wins because he’s able to work with others it’s him AND his team that beat Light on top of that he never got overly close and personal with light he treated the case like a detective. Near fought for justice whilst L fought for his own prided, L ultimately didn’t care about justice or saving lives he just wanted to show he was better and smarter than Light
Near was a great character. He's just so far outclassed by L that literally no one they replaced him with would had been satisfactory. From a narritive point, killing L was a good decision and opened up a way for the manga to go forward. If things had continued the way they had then the manga would had nowhere else to go unless Light started making mistakes which would had been uncharacteristic of him resulting in a bad manga. But what most people do not realize or accept is that Near is two people. Mello is the other half of Near and ot was only because they somehow figured out that mikami had a fake notebook that he saw his only path to forcing mikami to making a mistake big enough to get near's attention. It was because he sacrificed himself that near was able to checkmate kira.
Near won because he was able to prove it undeniably. Remember light is the king of gaslighting. Light's father took the eyes and owned a notebook and Light still pulled a maneuver to make him think he wasn't kira. Unless you prove it undeniably kira will just gaslight you till even you yourself believe you are wrong. It's only a matter of time.
The last 2 episodes of death note anime are the best 2 final episodes in recent anime history. It's amazing how they managed to craate such simple tension and Uber dramatic suspense at the same time. Yes. The manga finale is better...duh ..but. in terms of anime adaptation. This one rocks
Near never got the respect he deserved because people loved L so much that they hated this new brat coming in But he’s awesome and carried on the spirit of L perfectly

PEOPLE SERIOUSLY SHOULD READ THE MANGA!! It cut out many chapters… I think I recall estimating about 18 or so chapters. These help develop Near and Mello more as characters. Plus, the reasoning is more throughly explained. Also, Matsuda gives out a theory after Light dies by saying Near was controlling Mikami’s actions which would explain why he didn’t check to see if it was fake or not. The story always foreshadowed Light would die. The creators said that was always the end game. L being the one to do it would be cliche and like every story ever made. I’m so tired of the whole “Well after L died…” it’s such a bandwagon thing to say that I’m convinced a number of people saying it DIDN’T ACTUALLY take the time to look into after the time skip part.

Ryuk is not necessarily bound to answer their questions, and considering that the whole purpose of putting the Deathnote into the human world in the first place was to watch what happens for his own entertainment, I doubt whether Ryuk would give him up knowing it would promptly end his fun.
Might remember it wrong, bit i recall L and his butler had a whole orphanage full of kids like Near. Which means it doesnt matter if Near got lucky, another would have taken his place and they would just pick up where the last one left off. Eventually Light would make a mistake.
