Love the fact that the cab of that Dennis is no more than a wooden shed placed ontop of a chassis. At least the dual carriageway blast would have blown a few cobwebs from the engine.

Why on earth are you sitting to the side of the steering wheel & not directly behind it? Whoever designed the cab of the Dennis couldn't even pronounce 'ergonomics', never mind understand the meaning of the word. Lawrie's terror on the dual-carriageway is probably directly related to the fact it has very poor brakes by today's standards. He looked like he was 1/8th of a second from messing himself.

The Dennis probably just missed being able to use the Guildford by-pass dual carriageway, which passed the factory, because that was opened in 1934. However if it had to be driven to it's first owner up the A3 to london it would have been likely to have used the Kingsston-By-Pass. Incidentally. the Surrey County Council steam loc which featured on arecent statfold Barn video MIGHT have been used in the construction of the Kingston-By-Pass as well as the guildford one, so there may well be a direct connection between the Loco and the Lorry.

My D&T Tech teacher had a C5, once brought it out to show us - presume he always had it in the building so as to do that. Amazed to see so many in one place! The absolute terror you showed when going onto the dual carriageway got a lot of laughter out of me! Though given the vehicle, it's understandable. Still a good looking vehicle though - which goes for all of them, even if there's the odd one that technically shouldn't be there! Ought to visit classic shows more often tbh, perhaps see if there's a run like this nearby too.

I did once have to drive a Subaru 360 on the interstate. The on ramp was not even close to long enough for 356cc's to get a car up to speed... (luckily in Kansas, the minimum speed on the interstate is only 45mph, but anything under 55 is not really safe). At 50mph, the 2-stroke engine produced a deafening roar that sounded something like 40 leafblowers vs. 40 vacuum cleaners, sucked into a tornado.

The thing that always terrifies me the most about the Model-T and essentially any pre-1950s car is their liberal use of plain window glass rather than any type of safety glass. When you know that the windshield can at any time explode into a shower of large, razorsharp chunks, most of them heading straight for the soft, squishy driver sitting behind said windshield, that's definitely more information than you required. This was a fun 'feature' of the Model-T from what I have read. Not sure when they began using safety glass for windshields, but hoping that this 1936 Dennis was at the very least retrofitted with it :)

I'm surprised to see an American truck at the show, and I never realized how out-of-place it looks against its British and Swedish counterparts. Actually the "conventional" cabs are far more popular in the US nowadays, while cabovers remain the most popular in the UK and Europe, so that Scania conventional is actually a bit of an outlier. Also the hood ornament is definitely not standard, I believe it's a reference to the film Convoy (1978), where the main character (Rubber Duck)'s truck (which is actually a 1977 Mack RS700L) has this hood ornament instead of the standard Mack bulldog.

What's the little blue car at 7:30? It's adorable. My 1950 Crosley also has a non-syncromesh transmission, and it's... certainly something. I've gotten good at upshifting without grinding, but I think that's mainly because I cheat and shift at low speeds where I can just let the engine go to near idle and be like "yep, now it's time to put it in gear" as opposed to doing a proper double shift rev match. :p It does have the distinct design oversight of the long horizontally laid out shifter having enough weight for it to fall out of 2nd into neutral if you're idling on a downhill however.

(Also, forgive my invoking what very obviously was something of a traumatic episode for you, but just how fast DID it get up to on the Dual Carriageway?) It's a rattly old scoundrel of a thing, either way. The way the door just about came open when it fired up again after having its temper tantrum about made me dizzy from laughin! Also... oh dear, the placement of everything. No thought whatsoever to ergonomics in any way. (Then again, it's literally a large wooden box with a chrome grille pasted on the front and a bed at the back, so I don't know what I was expecting there.) I gather the suspension's a bit tired, as well... running it 'flat out' must've about had your back teeth about to rattle off! Oh, BTW, add that little Reliant Ant to the list of things I'd love to see you drive, and that... was that a WW1 Liberty Truck? Is that wheel off to your left? or is it the camera angle, because that looks incredibly uncomfortable to drive!

It's very much off centre - due to the bigger engine I think the seat isn't where it should be

Height of luxury in comparison!

The oldest thing I've ever driven on a public road was a Mercedes LP 608 lorry from around 1968 (picture-google it if you don't know what it is). Even this was pure luxury in comparison, featuring a synchronized gearbox, lots of power (80 hp), a top-speed above 80 km/h, 2 (two!) windscreen wipers, and a spacious cab where you can sit directly behind the steering wheel.

Couldn’t you have simply shifted into neutral and not needed to continuously hold the clutch depressed?

As I mentioned, I'd such difficulty getting it into first to start off with, (reverse then rocking to forward) I didn't want be unable to move and block the que of traffic as we left!

@@lmm That makes perfect sense. Ugh, what a pain. I imagine it would have been easier if the linkage had been used a bit more, or if it had not been so old (even if built to the same design).

Why wouldn't it be legal? Just needs to pass an MOT (thinking about the age, probably doesn't need an MOT)

Dude its a dual carriageway theres is no minimum speed drive at what you are happy with nobody is going to ram a lorry that size
@lmm
@lmm 2 года назад
Whilst technically true, when traffic around you wants to be doing a minimum of 56, it's a large hazard on the road, having a knock on effect to other road users by being a rolling road block.
