#INFINITI #Q50 #redsport #ttv6 #NISMO
Is the aging #infinitiq50 red sport with 400hp still a great performance luxury sedan buy? Or should you be looking at the new #acura #integratypes or the #lexus #is500 or even the #genesis #g70 ?
Today I drive and review the grunty and boosted #twinturbo Q50 #sedan
The 2023 Q50 SENSORY and RED SPORT 400 grades include a sport design front bumper that is lower and more angular, adds to the sedan's aggressive stance. Taking that visual enhancement a step further, these models also feature a black front grille, black window trim and a black finish strip on the trunklid.
Further building on the Q50 sedan’s already bold look, RED SPORT 400 adds black-painted exterior mirrors, red “S” badging, and dual exhaust tips with a brushed satin finish. In addition to offering a performance-focused appearance, the exhaust helps deliver a more powerful sound thanks to a revised mid-pipe.
Stepping up to the 2023 Q50 RED SPORT 400 rewards buyers with semi-aniline leather-appointed seats, finished in a striking Gallery White with Red stitching or Graphite with Red stitching. RED SPORT 400 also features aluminum pedals and genuine Matte Black carbon fiber trim, again for a performance-focused appearance.
In Q50 RED SPORT 400 sedans, the V6 engine is further enhanced to produce an impressive 400 maximum horsepower at 6,400 rpm - matching its naming - and 350 lb-ft at 1,600-5,200 rpm.
To match its impressive power, Q50 RED SPORT 400 boasts uprated brakes, with four-piston front and two-piston rear calipers, which are painted red. Also standard is Dynamic Digital Suspension, with dampers that continuously vary damping for optimum ride and handling. RED SPORT 400 models with rear-wheel drive are uniquely equipped with a staggered-width wheel configuration, with 0.5-inch wider rear wheels, to further bolster its high-performance appearance.

This has always been one of the best looking sedans in my eyes & still is today despite its age. Can't believe it's over ten years old now. I really hope a redesigned model eventually comes out.

At $60k, the V8 IS500 is definitely the only option between the two by a long shot. Q50s are an absolute bargain, but only if you buy used. You can easily find a red sport with 2 years 30k miles or less for about $32k. The VR30 has proven to be decently reliable as long as some minor issues are fixed (that are also performance upgrades) and proper maintenance. I currently have a 14' Q50S I got fully loaded with every option the dealer offered that i bought used 7 years ago for $25k. It has full boltons and tuned for 6 years with tons of racing and have had zero major issues at 100k miles

We just bought a Red Sport 400 (in red) certified pre-owned 2022 with 16K miles. We are replacing our 2014 Q50 Sport that has 183k miles. This has been a very reliable model for us. Love the minor updates and don't mind what some consider to be outdated interior features.

I’ve had a Q60 RS since 2017. Up here in the Great White North, this thing is a 4 season blast! With AWD and a set of (un-studded) Nokian Haakapeliittas, it’ll make you grin in the worst winter can throw at us. Zero issues, now just over 6 years old. Got rid of the stock Bridgestone run-flats and the handling/comfort improved immensely on Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3. The only complaint is it needs premium fuel which is super expensive in Canada. Such a shame there isn’t a turbo 4 hybrid in a revised model of this great, Japanese-made classic.

Thanks for your thoughts and video. I bought my 2017 Red Sport over 3 years ago for under $30k. It had 17k miles on the odometer. 3 years later and 40k more miles, I can sell it for around $20-24k. I have gotten my moneys worth. Cars are not a good investment. They always depreciate. But I will say that I have enjoyed driving it every day and have had a lot of fun!!! Call me crazy, but I still drool when I hear that engine! There’s no denying how much beauty this car still has. But I don’t foresee Nissan ever adopting the “change is good” notion for the Q50. Which is sad because like many of their outbound models, there was too much potential to ignore. But Nissan, and other Japanese automakers, have this innate ability to live by that ancient rule of thumb…”If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” Side note: Kirk, you’re probably the coolest dad on your block man lol love seeing your reviews featuring the kid seats!

It’s a Q50 tried and true. The car doesn’t need a redesign just features that come with cars half the cost. Wish Infiniti added ventilation on the front seats and heated rear. Owned these before. Drove the Lexus isf350 and was more impressed although slower, the Lexus was a go for me. Good luck Infiniti. It is a really nice reliable tried and true car.

I love this car especially with that green color! You can say all you want about its older styling, yet, it is still very good looking and a bit stealth looking. Also, no one can deny the refinement in its design by now, which means a high level of reliability. I have driven new Q50s and even they are quite rapid, withe the V6 twin turbo design. If you think about the GTR, all the top level design and mechanicals, as well as development has always come down to these Infinitis. I have a 2017 QX50 which has a naturally aspirated 3.7 liter V6 all wheel drive and even that gets very quick in its power band and the all wheel drive system works amazing. The newer model of that vehicle has a new 4 cylinder turbo which is nowhere as nice or fast and feels wonky...it seems obvious to me, the longer a design is out there the more overall refined they are. This red sport is still a great buy today, unless, you are just looking for something that looks and feels like a brand new design and that is your main hangup! Drive one and see how fun it truly is...I am certain you will be surprised. A chip off the GTR.

Had a 2019 RS400…sold it back in May. Great timing on purchase, Mar 2020 (COVID chaos). Dealer knocked 17K off 60K MSRP. Sold it for 39K, so I lucked out…Reasons for sale, reliability, resale, safety. While it never left me on the side of the road…too many examples of this vehicle (belt, turbos, tire wear issues, etc) having issues. As you noted, after 5 yrs the resale is horrible, especially for those who paid full MSRP. When it comes to safety… I did not have an AWD version and felt totally unsafe. Way too much torque and Horsepower for a car that doesn’t have a limited slip differential, Q50 has an open differential. Turning a corner, pulling out in traffic, I’d feel safer in a Toyota Tercel. Car would lose traction and as a result shut down power, leaving the vehicle to flounder as traffic comes up on you. Waiting on my naturally aspirated 2024 IS500…should address my main 3 issues with the Q50.
@mholmes9262

Great choice in the IS500, such a beautiful car and the sonorous 5.0 V8 is a gem. I was so tempted to get one after sitting in one at the car show in Jan '22 but I ended up ordering a '22 Model 3P instead. Love it, different experience behind the wheel, very quick and comfortable but also a little unemotional. Overall though I love it. I had an '18 Q50 RS AWD before the Tesla and even AWD didn't fix the traction issues. I always disabled the TC as soon as I got in because of the exact reason you stated - the torque management in low grip (basically anything except going straight on a warm, clean dry road) was awful and would cut far more power than you'd expect and it would take far too long to adjust once traction was regained, which did feel like a safety issue. Disabling TC helped mitigate the unexpected cut in power but then the back end would lose grip and swing wide in Mustang fashiion unexpectedly if you were too aggressive with the throttle when turning right, especially. It was embarrassing on the number of occasions that it happened. I also had several repairs (including the ones you cited) in the 3 yrs I owned it (one requiring a flatbed) amounting to about $10k, thankfully all under warranty. But who wants to have a loaner car every 2-3 months while their car is being repaired yet again? I sold it in Feb 2022 and I was happy to be rid of it.

for 60k+, a M340i would be a better car to have in every way. I had my 2018 Q50S for six years now. I just had my turbo replaced because of turbo oil leak for about $8600. Good thing I had a 3rd party extended warranty that pays for it, only responsible for $100.

Great review/POV. It’s a nice looking sedan with plenty of go. I could live with the outdated interior. The electronic steering is the only thing I don’t care for. It just doesn’t have the drivers feel of the competition. They should also price it closer to the top of line G70.

Nice honest review. Infiniti is stuck in quicksand. My 2016 Red Sport looks almost the same as the 2023, what the hell. Traded it for a Genesis GV70 3.5 Sport Prestige when the QX55 I was considering and waiting for was such a huge disappointment. I liked the Red Sport looks and performance but the interior and tech are a decade behind the competition. Where are Infiniti's hybrids and EVs? The brand is dying, and now they have Genesis to contend with. I liked Infiniti, owned 3 straight (G70 IPL, QX50, Q50 Red Sport), but the lack of meaningful refreshes and tech updates is the recipe to go out of business.

Beautiful car. I have the 2019 Redsport 400 awd and have also owned the standard a 2015 V6 (300 hp sport awd) in ice blue. - neither of which came with Apple car play or android auto. Very simple updates would bring this car so much forward: -9 speed from the Z and QX60 - ventilated seats - replace the Dunlop Sport Maxx summer run flat tires (they are loud, expensive and dated) - consider UHP all season tires such as Michelin All Season 4’s, Pirelli pzero or Continental dws6+ etc - get rid of run flat tires and add back the spare tire package - update the infotainment to have a new high resolution 360 camera - modern head and tail lights - update the infotainment interface and processor. - service these vehicles at Nissan, very few Infiniti dealers left. The best colours: - dark blue - white - red - gray (I have this) Prior to the pandemic these were commonly $10000 off. Love it thus far, 80000+ miles zero problems. Zero problems with my prior V6 300 AWD

Infiniti is competitive. Their issue is selling cars to people with a 300 credit score. People with a 300 credit score have poor abstract thinking skills, people with poor abstract thinking skills are typically bad at maintenance. Poor maintenance habits on a luxury-performance car is going to cause severe and intense depreciation. It's really a shame, as my friend has a Q50 and I've driven it extensively. It is equipped with the VQ37VHR, and has incredible ride comfort while still hugging the road as tightly as you can ask a 3,800lbs 4 door luxury sedan to. The interior is quiet, and free of creaks and rattles. The engine has a wonderful personality, providing plentiful but not excessive low end torque, and it pulls strong to its high 7,500 RPM redline. The transmission, an automatic, is also very intelligent, and appears to measure the driver's average throttle input across a fixed time window. In practice, if you've been using more throttle, it'll wait longer, and hold a lower gear to give you more access to the torque you've been demanding so much of. If you've been cruising with the throttle barely cracked open, it grabs the tallest gear, and requires more throttle input to gear down than if you were driving spiritedly. Really just an amazing car, which unfortunately is often purchased by irresponsible morons who ruin it.

Those same people will complain that "new thing sucks" when lusting over cars they didn't buy when they were available. As an owner of an AWD Q60 RS, I would NEVER buy them “new”. Buying these used is where it starts to make sense, CPO & low mileage is the way to go. For the asking price, the competition is fierce in the segment. If I didn’t own a VR30, I’d be in a B58 (M440i/M340i) without a doubt. Infiniti/Nissan failed to make ANY meaningful updates & improvements for this platform. It had a lot of potential, updating infotainment, transmission & steering would have yielded much more sales. The competitors (German) are always improving models vs Infiniti staying stale which is just sad tbh.

Kinda sucks that Q50 is compared against Integra. Thought this class of car is more comparable to that of TLX, but I guess years of stagnation allowed lower tier models to catch up. On the other hand... I get the fact that Integra Type S does punch above its weight class but... is it really worth that much money? is my doubt. Would've been nice if Honda decided to make Euro R Accord revival and upgraded that to the new TLX type S like in the early 2000s at high $50K to high $60K price tag would've made much better sense... Honda definitely knows how to pull that off. Their product planning is just downright atrocious while Toyota/Lexus is just killing it in that department these days.
@TheBreakfastLover
@TheBreakfastLover 8 месяцев назад
That's a great idea. In many ways the TLX Type S is the lineal successor to the Accord Euro R. The Accord Euro Type S replaced the Euro R, and was rebadged as the TSX in America, then the TLX replaced the TSX.
@preventer333
@preventer333 8 месяцев назад
@@TheBreakfastLover I really do miss the TSX and the wagon... I'm starting to think the real issue with the current Integra and Type S is indeed the namesake. If the current car was named as TSX successor or something different than Integra, I wouldn't bat an eye on its price and happily compared it against compact lux sedans.

I'm not going to spend that kind of money for power I will probably never need. So starting a vid with a 0-60 run does little or nothing to excite me. That said, it definitely is a sharp looking car. Spot on catch on those chrome door handles.

Here's my take on this: I don't think the Infiniti is a slouch in any department you've mentioned, compared to the other three cars. I'd definitely love one BUT the concern for me would be how hard it drops in resale value. That and it being a Nissan and their known issues with transmission and sensors would make me stay away. Lookswise, it's still a gorgeous and aggressive car but I agree that it looks outdated. I wouldn't be spending this much on this car given it's still the exact same car from 7 years ago. And this is how I feel about the GTR as well. I only hope Nissan doesn't allow the Z to suffer this same issue of becoming dated too. If I could afford any of the four, I'd go for the Lexus though.

I used to have an '18 Q50 AWD Red Sport that looked identical to this one (other than having bright chrome instead of black chrome, which it should have had all along, IMO) and I agree it is a gorgeous car in the metal, although it looks a bit contrived and overwrought from some angles...overall though it has aged well. But I bought mine as a CPO for $39k (+TTL) and at that price back in 2019, I would say it was a pretty decent buy. At $63K, not a chance. I would not buy it again, I'd rather admire it from a distance as my experience with the car was not the greatest. The interior is nice but the only standout feature is the excellent front seats. Design, materials, performance and NVH are all well below the standard bearers for the class. It was a matter of mere months before I started to have the itch to get rid of it for something else and finally sold it last year and bought something far more enjoyable ('22 Model 3P). I do still think it looks good, though. It's too bad Infiniti didn't take it more seriously, if they had, I might still be driving it.

A person who has never owned a bmw , how would they know it won’t last over 30K miles.? I suggest anyone who buys a luxury card to get it brand new like I did; that way they can have a sense of relief knowing that the car never been dogged out and neglected with maintenance service.
