Overactive bladder diet food swaps to help you enjoy your favorite foods and reduce bladder urgency. Physiotherapist diet guide for best foods to choose instead of common bladder irritants for managing overactive bladder problems (urinary urgency, frequency and nocturia).
Website: www.pelvicexer...
Common bladder irritants can increase common problems associated with overactive bladder including bladder urgency, frequency, urge urinary incontinence and nocturia (night waking to void). Home treatment includes bladder control training and consuming a diet that reduces the intake of bladder irritants in favor of bladder friendly foods and drinks.
Commonly occurring bladder irritants in the diet include:
*Caffeine
*Acidic foods
*Some fiber supplements
*Artificial sweeteners
*Alcohol
Overactive Bladder Diet Alternatives to Choose
Some of these foods and drinks provide you with bladder friendly swaps that may help you enjoy some of your favorite foods. These food swaps don't necessarily apply to everyone owing to individual differences. Be mindful that the quantity of food and drink swaps consumed can also have an impact with overactive bladder problems. Keep your food swaps to a small quantity when starting out.
1. Caffeine
Caffeine is a bladder irritant and diuretic. Instead choose:
-Low acid and low caffeine coffee instead of decaffeinated and regular coffee
White chocolate and carob instead of dark chocolate
LOW ACID COFFEE online sources:
*SIMPATICO - Dark Roast Regular, Espresso (Decaf
& Regular)
*PUROAST - Guatemalan, Columbia, House Blend,
French Roast, Vanilla, Hazelnut
*EUROMILD - Regular, Decaf
*TYLER'S ACID FREE - Decaf (ground and beans)
2. Acidic Foods
Red tomatoes and tomato products are high in acid and are classified as common bladder irritants.
yellow and pink tomato varieties have a lower acid content than red tomatoes and may be tolerated by some individuals.
3. Fiber Supplements
Choose natural fiber supplements such as pysllium husks to avoid the artificial sweeteners and acid additives in some processed fiber supplements.
4. Artificial Sweeteners
Avoid artificial sweeteners such as Aspartame and Saccharine that can cause bladder irritation.
-Choose Stevia, Splenda or stevia leaves as a bladder friendly alternative.
5. Alcohol
Alcohol is a bladder irritant and diuretic which therefor increases bladder urgency. Alternatives can include the following however all alcohol has the potential to act as a bladder irritant:
low alcohol beer
low alcohol flat wines (rather than sparkling) Chardonnay or Riesling rather than sparkling wines
water and ice mixers rather than carbonated beverages
vodka or gin may be less irritating than rum or whisky for some individuals

Thank you for brilliant advice delivered in a very informative, kind and caring manner. Many doctors on RU-vid talking over their patients, complaining about them really and stating the obvious that anyone looking for help has already tried. It seems they assume persons with bladder issues are complete idiots. I learned more in 5 minutes with your videos than i have in months of seeking medical advice following kidney stones leading to bladder issues. They pass you around like a fire drill in a clown car charging hundreds of dollars to be unhelpful and often quite rude, leaving you in misery with no resolution (USA based). It seemed everything i loved - coffee, tomatoes etc were out, but also what is good for the kidneys, is bad for the bladder and vice versa. You really helped to clear up the best options so that life isn't totally unbearable while this conditions resolves (praying).

Oh wow I didn't know there was low acid decaf coffee. Coffee irritates my bladder terribly. I have been limiting my coffee intake to about one Cup a week as a treat. I usually make it a weekend treat kind of thing and I drink decaf. I had no clue there is low acid. I will get some and try it. And the white chocolate, that is great to know too. I love chocolate and that is something I've been avoiding too. I am not a regular drinker of alcohol so that's not too much of an issue for me but I do like wine occasionally and luckily I actually get a white wine and it is riesling. So that's cool. Thank you so much for your sharing your knowledge and helping.

Overactive bladder is a new condition for me at age 64. Ms. Kenway's "Overactive Bladder Diet - Key Foods to AVOID with Urgency" was my first peek into its potential causes. I was surprised that this list of foods to choose included only ersatz substitutes for the foods to avoid. I was expecting that there would be some alkaline foods that could be ingested that would neutralize acidic foods. I'm guessing that the reality is more complicated than that, so I'll venture down the internet rabbit hole of food pH.

Can vitamin c consumption on a daily basis (ascorbic acid + citric acid) cause bladder issues? I have been consuming one pouch of EmergenC orange flavor due to the virus stuff and I couple of days ago o started noticing a massive increase in urination or desire to urinate. I started thinking what is the one thing in my routine that has changed and it's that plus.a bunch of.other supplement I'm in taking daily. Could that be it?! Then, miraculously I get this video. Do these drinks irritate the bladder long term or for a certain length of time after they are consumed? For example I can drink a glass of wine with chocolate at night and still just go to the bathroom 1 x per night. However a cup of coffee in the morning can set me going and seems to be more of a problem. In other words should I just stop drinking the coffee and wine for good?
@michellephysio
@michellephysio 4 года назад
Hi Carol different drinks irritate different people - try stopping or cutting back on the coffee and note the effect. Then you can make a decision about whether you also need to cut back on the wine too

@user-ph6ib3bd2l Hello there, water and low caffeine drinks are usually the best drinks for overactive bladder. Lemons, limes, oranges and even tomatoes have high citric acid content. For some people this irritates the inside of the bladder making OAB worse (but not for everyone). It is a matter of trial and error, 4- 5 days no lemon drink and see how your bladder reacts in comparison to when you drink citric acid and ginger in the mornings. You may or may not notice a difference. I hope this information is helpful! 🙏

Coffee crisp ,a chocolate and coffee candy bar, was my only way that I would have coffee thankfully I beat my sugar addiction two years ago but I can't remember the last time I indulges in candy bars chocolate I gave up when my allergist made her recommendations eleven years ago never did like wine ...drinking carbonated water or flavoured soda drinks I haven't done that in the last forty years unless desperately thirsty and absolutely no other option . I seldom use fresh tomatoes but I do buy Italian organic passatta imported packaged in glass bottles, no seeds or skins, it is in relatively small ones so I use it more like flavouring rather than using it all for one or two meals. ...can you tell I like writing comments Even if they are just the ramblings of a little old lady who used to be a much larger one . now I shall have to find out how active a batter is to be declared over active🙄🤔😁🥇😘💞💕💞🍀❤️🍀🖖🖖🖖🍀🌟🍀👍👍👍🍀❤️🍀🙋🏼‍♀️
