It’s one of the reasons this game might age quite well if Bethesda manages this game well. Highly cartoony graphics means that becoming ‘outdated’ is both harder and less impactful. It’s why something like the Borderlands series is still relevant despite existing for well over a decade now. And it’s by far one my my favourite ways of making a game interesting
depends on your personal definition, advanced could be technologically advanced, it's high quality and sharp so definitely advanced in that sense, though some people might think of graphical advancement as being moving toward realism
@@rogue8146 yeah, that was my point. The game is pretty graphically advanced but it's using all of that towards reinforcement of the style it wants instead of maximizing realism.
100% It uses similar cel shading techniques as Guilty Gear which takes a lot more work to perfect than PBR shading due to needing optimize each individual model for the style.
The strong stylistic choice will mean this game ages a lot better. In a few years, some of the game we consider "realistic" will look quaint and outdated by the higher standards, but games like HiFiRush, Jet Set Radio, Dragon's Lair, all still look good today
Same kinda thing happened with the Borderlands franchise as well. It’s part of the reason HiFi Rush is appealing to me Plus Kale reminds me of Handsome Jack a little
13:17 I would argue that the graphics of Hi-Fi Rush are still very advanced, just in a different direction. As someone who is making an indie game with a similarly cel-shaded anime-inspired art style, just watching footage of this game makes my head swim (but like in good way)
I do dig how seamless the animation to its cutscenes are, it catch players surprised when the game is done w/ its cutscenes and letting player input/control.
@EL_CHAPOLMAN yea lets be honest, this is the best fighting game and one of the best rhythm games to ever exist. And thats just with gameplay alone. The animation, story, and characters are amazing too.
Honestly that's what indie games give me. The treat was seeing something like this from a Bethesda studio (at that tango Gameworks whose known for horror and just had a meh game in Tokyo ghostwire) and published as a first party Microsoft game.
I really love the art style of Hi Fi Rush, it's so cool, one of my favorites games of 2023. This design makes the game so unique and special, that will be remembered for years to come.
One thing I didn't hear you mention here is that the characters are usually animated at a lower FPS during the in-engine cutscenes, while most of the environment and camera movements remain at 60 FPS. It really helps make it feel like hand-drawn animation while still allowing the overall visual experience to appear smooth and cohesive.
Hi-Fi Rush is a game that i felt was made for me personally. It's a game that just speaks through its style. Nostalgia of early - mid 2000s cartoons and gaming
@@shiv3rcubesolver664 no you are not brother, I thought you said "I'm not the only one who saw that" clearly my eye sight hasn't improved since I watched that show
@@shiv3rcubesolver664 it's pretty popular. Also they're doing a lot to keep the show relevant. Like the official youtube channel posts a lot of content and just puts all the episodes up for free.
Hi Fi Rush is very much like the work of Nerd Corps Entertainment. Series like Slugterra, Storm Hawks, Dragon Booster, Hot Wheels Battle Force 5, and Max Steel (2013). So much of my childhood and shows I love. Bought the game after watching the trailer and getting the same vibe. So much fun and style.
TLDR: Correction, tweens are not in-betweens, in-betweens are the in-between frames of an animation in 3D or 2D, Tweens are specifically interpolated 2D in-between frames. Small correction, tweening isn't the process of making in-between animation frames, tweening is specifically interpolated frames in a 2D animation program usually made with a 2D rigged object. This kind of interpolation is the default in 3D animation but it's not called tweening. it makes a lot of sense to interpolate in 3D because there's very little guess work in what to render (because the object can rotate, scale and translate in 3D space) but when you use tweening you're asking a computer to guess frames between 2 drawings by resizing and rotating a 2D image (this was made before AI could do art), which is why tweening is different form regular 3D animation interpolation. Tweening is a process used to make 2D animations faster not a process every kind of animation uses, in-betweens or in-betweening is the process of creating secondary pose frames to support the key frames (aka literally putting in all the stuff that's supposed to be in between your key frames) and it's necessary for all kinds of animation. I understand the confusion because the words are so similar and basically mean the same thing on the surface but the big difference is that you can always turn off any kind of interpolation (which is necessary for making more cartoony animations, especially in 3D and it requires more manual frames) and do every frame manually (aka frame by frame animation or old school animation) but there are interpolation tools that will help you fill the in-between frames automatically and allow you to work faster, tweening is an interpolation tool for 2D animation. Basically in-betweens are all frames in between your key frames and Tweens are 2D interpolations of your 2D key frames (made with a 2D rig), you always need in-betweens but you can't always apply Tweens.
MAN! Look at Chai's model stretching frame by frame with , . at 11:57 look at his hand, his eyes his hair, all of them stretching to ilustrate motion, and that is a 3D model, it is really nice to see!
The GDC talk about this game's art style and how they achieved got published on RU-vid about 2 hours ago. Would be interesting to see you recreate the style in Unreal and maybe even turn it into a (paid) tutorial. We need more games in this timeless style for sure. Nobody better to tutorialize it than Stylized Station!
Having made a few cell shaders in various formats for my company, one of my pet peeves is when the gradient whether an object is lit or not just terminates when the surface normal is perpendicular to the light.... cell shading is so much more expressive when you allow some gradation in the shaded side!
Thank you, I had been looking for a video on that exact subject a few days ago and couldn't find anything and today I got your video on the recomendation tabs, it feels like you made it just for me ! 🤣
I feel this style isn't done much, because it very difficult to pull off and look good. Ive tried to make my environments look like this, but dam its hard to do.
Definitely, too much realism can be bad in my opinion, different games all end up looking the same, I'll take HI-FI graphics over PBR any day, it just oozes style :D
This game brings a lot of A.T.O.M memories, the tv shows animation had a lot of similarities with this game, also tr whole hero teenager thing. Brings back a flood of memories this game looks truly special, I'm hoping to pick it up soon. Thanks for making this video!
My GOTY 2023. It blows up "bigger" games out of the water. Especially those aiming for realism without any true identity. Hi-Fi Rush looks perfect and runs smoothly in almost any system!!
Insane that there isn't a single mention of Xrd or other arcsys games in this video, even though looking at the models and textures, it's clear where a lot of the know-how came from.
This jet grind radio shit is cool and all, but I am subbing for your upcoming Jiggle Physics Video you mentioned? I consider myself an expert on the topic and am interested on your analysis of the various technics being used in the industry.
About the heartbeat part, I'm surprised you didn't mention the UI, specifically the bar ar the top-left, as I was watching that throughout the entire video
I hope similar to the spiderverse hi if rush will usher in a new form of gaming with stylized graphics instead of monotonous mundanity of recently published games. Games don’t need to have amazing graphics to succeed. I mean Tetris, Minecraft, and teamfortress two aren’t really “hyper realistic”.
This is hands down my favorite game in recent history. Yes, even more than GoW Ragnarok. It deserves all the attention of gamers and some awards this year. 10/10!
Wow, this game looks amazing, I always loved comic books and visually appealing animation, and this game feels like a comic book coming to life, I love it. I personally like stylized games over realistic games. While realistic games today looks amazing, this game is a breath of fresh air, I'll check this game out.
After seeing Hi Fi Rush. Kinda feel like if there was gived more time to NSR it can be something ever better. Well it was fun working on it while it last.
It's AA budget game that was meant to be a 10hr campaign. The amount & variety of villains were ideal for what they accomplished, plus practically all the major boss battles were humans lol. This game deserves a sequel. DLC. However, the NG+ is really good too, but hopefully there's a small DLC later.
Hifi Rush is going to be like Zelda Wind Waker. Some people may hate the cartoony-looking graphic at first, but it will aged like a fine wine `3` (Pretty sure most people who played the game said the it looks awesome already tho)
this game may not be realistic, but it has amazing graphics, so i really don't understand how you'd say they aren't the best it has incredibly high definition and a great frame rate
If i had a nickel for every time a visually distinct game that came out recently, I'd have two nickels, Which is not mindblowing, But it's weird it has happened twice. The other game being Pizza Tower of course.
I personally hate the style It's like every object is SCREAMING for my attention There's no space to breathe, I don't know what to focus my attention to If I already feel bad just looking at gameplay, I don't like to imagine what it would feel like actually playing it lol If the color palette was different, it would look so much better honestly
