Overcoming imposter syndrome as a beginner artist 🎨

As a beginner artist, it can feel like you are a total imposter in the art world. So many of us are comfortable considering ourselves "people who draw or paint sometimes" but find it incredibly difficult actually calling ourselves ARTISTS. I was 100% there, too, and after about a year and a half of creating artwork consistently, I'm at a place now where I'm finally comfortable calling myself an artist.
In this video, I walk you through my journey that led me to this point, as well as three mindset shifts that have helped me overcome my own imposter syndrome as a beginner artist.
Whether you're a beginner artist like I am, or perhaps you're more seasoned, I'd love to hear about your journey with imposter syndrome in the art world.
By the way -- thank you for being here! You're helping me make my dreams come true 🫶🏼

This is so encouraging and so well-presented. In the old days, an artist could get confidence from showing their work locally, maybe being recognized as an artist in their community or town. Nowadays, looking at social media, we're comparing our own work to artists from all over the world. So it can really feel like: "Oh, everybody is way more skilled and productive than I am!" No wonder we often feel like very small fish in a huge pond. So I super-appreciate what you say in this video--how important it is to define ourselves as artists no matter what we're seeing "out there." Self-confidence is definitely an inside job. Great video!

I’m so glad to hear you got some value from this video, Bridget!! 🫶🏼 It’s so true - as wonderful as it is to be able to see what artists all over the world are creating, there are times when we kind of have to put on blinders and focus on our own work. I recently heard a perspective in another RU-vid video that really stuck with me (I think it was from Tofu Goob’s channel!), which is that scrolling through Instagram every day can mean that you’re looking at the same amount of art you’d see if you were to visit, like, 50+ art galleries in one day. That’s A LOT to take in, and to your point, it introduces a ton of unproductive opportunities for comparison and negative self talk. I love closing all of that out and just being my own hype person whenever I can 😆

Oh, that's so interesting and true about the 50+ art galleries in one day. No wonder we sometimes feel overwhelmed! Thanks again@@pepostudios

Thank you for this message Sarah! I have been struggling with this for along time! The imposter side. I am not a strong artist but I have been picking it up and try it! I painted a watercolor whale and a mushroom yesterday. The whale wasnt the best. But i learned to make a beige color for the mushroom all on my own! Felt good to do it and learn from doing! 😊❤

Woohoo, amazing job!!! Once I started playing around with mixing my own colors I felt like a whole new world opened up, which was just so exciting. Every little thing really does add up over time 🙌🏼 Keep going!!

I have a whole art degree, design clients, etc and still feel like an imposter a lot of the time - such a great video! Love following you!

🥹🫶🏼 thank you!! And it’s so interesting to hear that even with all of those things you still feel like an imposter… it seems to me like imposter syndrome never really goes away, we just get better at managing it!

Fantastic video! I was around 22/23 when I picked art back up after not having drawn in years. I'm 32 now and while I'm still not exactly where I want to be (pesky perfectionism) I can see insane improvement because I go back and look at my old work from time to time when I'm feeling discouraged about my current stuff. It really does help!

After I saw a banana duct taped to a wall being called art, I never felt like an impostor again.

@@Jackieeeisvibing That's my point. If making me feel something is enough for it to be considered art, even a random pile of dog shit lying in the street is art. If a dog is an artist, who isn't? If that banana is art, what isn't?

This came at the right time! My mind is running in so many directions to learn something and create something but I keep getting overwhelmed where to start and call myself an imposter knowing nothing and belittling myself. Thanks

I’m so glad to hear that the timing was right on this, Purvi! I really think that clarity comes with action, so just by doing something small every day the path ahead will become much more clear! 🫶🏼

Yep, yep, yep…and yep! Answering affirmatively to all the statements in your video 😂 😅. I think my biggest conditioning is not having had a conventional art education. In that case I’d feel validated with every single artistic achievement, monetised or not. Instead I feel as if I’m stepping into someone’s territory (with no papers!) every time. I cannot afford art school now at the tender age of 50 odd….😊I could probably teach students a thing or two though for sure 😂- your work is super and I totally thought you in fact must have gone to art school in the past!

That’s such a good analogy - it totally can feel like you’re stepping onto someone else’s territory and you’re not supposed to be there! But I’m sure you’re right in that you’ve accumulated a lot of really valuable knowledge and experience, and I don’t think you necessarily need a special piece of paper to prove that you’re a talented artist 😊 also - thank you so much for your kind words! I’m so flattered!

Oh I deal with this a lot! I'm an artist and art teacher and deal with wondering if I'm good enough. I even teach my students to believe in themselves but it's easier said than done when it comes to myself. I'm open with my students about it because we all struggle at times. I've learned to challenge myself when I get into the comparison game with other artists thinking why would I be successful when others are darn good! I started asking myself, why not me?
@pepostudios

Yesss, exactly! Why not you!! I think that’s so amazing that you’re talking to your students about your own struggles. It’s soooo important to normalize these things, and the more we talk about it the more we realize that we don’t have to struggle alone. You’re changing people’s lives with your work 🫶🏼
