This is a one-off video to clear the air about Money Dysmorphia,
Money dysmorphia is trending today and everyone has something to say about it, let’s take a minute and dive a little deeper to gain a clearer understanding and explore the ways to overcome it.
Dysmorphia originates from the Latin words "Dys," meaning "Hard" or "Bad," and "Morphe," meaning "Shape" or "Form," collectively implying "disformed." Traditionally, Dysmorphia has been associated with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), or body dysmorphia, a psychological condition where individuals excessively worry about perceived flaws in their appearance. These flaws are often unnoticeable to others. People of any age can have body dysmorphia, but it's most common in teenagers and young adults. It affects both men and women. Having BDD does not mean you're vain or self-obsessed, but it can be very upsetting and have a big impact on your life.
You may have body dysmorphic disorder if you:
worry a lot about a specific area of your body (particularly your face), spend a lot of time comparing your looks with other people's, look at yourself in mirrors a lot or avoid mirrors altogether, go to a lot of effort to conceal flaws - for example, by spending a long time combing your hair, applying make-up or choosing clothes, pick at your skin to make it look smooth.
So What is Money-Dysmorphia?
Not believing in your actual financial condition or the numbers in your bank account, it involves a distorted perception of one's financial situation or capability to manage money effectively. It's perceiving oneself as financially poor despite evidence to the contrary. This mindset often stems from past financial mistakes or experiences of scarcity.
Symptoms of Money Dysmorphia include persistent worry about finances, compulsive comparison with others' financial status, excessive focus on concealing perceived financial flaws, and a tendency to downplay one's financial capabilities.
For example, if you have grown up with food insecurity, You may find yourself overbuying groceries.
People who have money dysmorphia live with the mentality of a broke person, even when they’re not. They feel poor even though they are not. Their first thought most of the times is, “I can’t afford this!” even when they actually can.
Money dysmorphia can also mean feeling insecure and unstable despite having plenty of money in savings or being in a stable position because it’s more about how you see yourself than the real-life numbers.
You may be great at taking care of your financial needs, or may be making more good financial decisions than bad ones, to accomplish financial your goals. Yet when a big decision shows up, you do not trust yourself to make it.
Notably, Money Dysmorphia isn't solely about the actual numbers but also about the mindset surrounding them. While understanding and managing financial figures are crucial, addressing the underlying trust issues is paramount in overcoming this condition.
To shift your Money Mindset:
Acknowledge that you can be proficient with money.
Seek out examples validating your financial competency.
Take practical steps such as creating a budget, setting realistic goals, and monitoring progress.
Consider seeking professional help from therapists or financial planners if necessary.
Minimize exposure to social-media content that creates and builds upon financial anxieties and focus on your personal growth journey.
Remember, overcoming Money Dysmorphia is about building trust in yourself and your financial decisions. It's about granting yourself the confidence to create a healthy financial future. While the journey may have its challenges, every step towards financial empowerment is worth celebrating. You have the power to redefine your relationship with money and shape a prosperous tomorrow.
