Conquering My Fear: Starting a YouTube Channel as a Non-Native English Speaker

I have wanted to start a RU-vid channel (in English) for a long time, but my fears and doubts held me back. Not anymore. It's time to dive in, embrace imperfection, and just improve with every video. Starting a RU-vid channel in English as a non-native speaker feels especially daunting, particularly for someone like me who isn't super confident in speaking it. Yet, I love RU-vid and I love creating videos, so I hope this journey helps me gain confidence in my English-speaking skills.

Victoria, you have the cutest accent ever, and if anything it just adds to the authenticity of you being a Native Norwegian representing the Norwegian lifestyle. In other words the accent is a charming feature that reinforces your "branding", if that makes sense. There is just something so vulnerable with putting oneself out there on youtube, for everyone to watch and be the judge of. But watching you just do it anyway is incredibly empowering and inspirational. My biggest fear of starting a youtube channel would be how other people would judge me, but thanks to you that doesn't seem as scary anymore

I used to beat myself up because of my non-native accent in English, but I moved to Scotland a few years ago and people actually love my accent. It is a good conversation starter as well haha. It also helps to remind yourself that most native English speakers probably have a worse accent in Norwegian and you probably wouldn't mind it and just be happy they are trying :)
@VictoriaSagely
@VictoriaSagely 5 месяцев назад
Thank you for this comment! Very good points. I try to remind myself of this. But often times, Norwegians are the ones that are most cruel to each other about the accent. At the same time, I can’t care about that too much 😊

Thanks Victoria for sharing this 😊🙏 I am in the same situation. I have a channel in Arabic language and it is doing well, but I want to do my content in English as it would be better for my business. I am wondering if you started new channel for English or just rebranded your channel?
@VictoriaSagely
@VictoriaSagely Месяц назад
I would recommend starting a new channel, that’s what I did! I had 1k subs on my Norwegian channel, many of them inactive though, but I don’t think my English videos would perform well with that audience. The subs would not click on those videos, which sends a bad signal to the RU-vid algorithm. So start a new one, and just remember that it takes a few weeks or even months for RU-vid to find your right audience. Good luck 😁

I think expecting to speak like an American is a bit unrealistic because, and I am assuming here, you don’t have the exposure to the dialect/accent that one needs to pick up on it. As an American many of us can tell, and I think it goes for almost anyone else too, when someone is forcing themselves to have an accent. It just sounds unnatural and pretentious, far safer and more authentic to speak in your own natural accent ☺️. And to further complicate matters, which American accent? I presume that we are talking about USA. What is American accent to you? Boston/New England accent? South? Midwest? West Coast? South Cali and Valley Girl? I am missing a couple I am sure. Also to be completely honest, part of me gets a little sad when I see how much US media has proliferated and other people’s accent start to sound like us from consuming so much US media. I love hearing other people’s accent when they speak english. You don’t know how unique it is to us.
@VictoriaSagely
@VictoriaSagely 4 месяца назад
Thank you, really appreciate this comment! It's difficult to say what kind of American accent I mean (within USA), but I think most Norwegians just want to sound good (whatever that means). The Norwegian English accent is often made fun of here in Norway, so no one wants to speak like that. Petter Solberg is often used as an example of this way of speaking, there are many RU-vid videos on "Petter Solberg English". As you say, it's better to speak in your own natural accent, but the problem is that I'm still trying to find my accent. As English is not my native language and I've never lived abroad, it can be challenging to find a way to speak that sounds natural to me. I don't know if that makes sense. Since childhood, we've been watching American TV shows and movies, which has essentially set the standard for us, and can be difficult to live up to. As I have grown older, I have come to the realization that it is very unrealistic to sound American. When I realized that, I finally felt brave enough to create this channel and not be so hard on myself. Things are going pretty well, even if my English is not perfect, which is a relief!

@@VictoriaSagely I have never heard of him so I looked him up and I have to say y’all must have some strong internal insecurity about how you speak 😅. He sounds intelligible and perfectly fine, very European accent but that is to be expected. I think the accent many people mean when they think “American” is this really middle of nowhere America that has almost no character. I call it TV accent, you can hardly tell anything about it except that is very exportable to overseas. Some Canadians have it until they say “bag” or “about” and it betrays them 😂. My fav US accent is the Southern drawl or Texan. I wanna say “bless your heart” with a strong southern accent to anyone that annoys me and just watch their face fall 😈 When I was younger I read this children’s story about a crow that saw these graceful swans, he tried to mimic their walk and grace. He couldn’t quite get it and tried to go back to his crows, they asked him why he walked like that. He ended up forgetting how he walked naturally. I remind myself of that story whenever I see people -especially on social media. A reminder to be authentic and myself. Another perspective I am not sure you might have thought about is how reassuring seeing you speak with your accent will be to other folks for whom English isn’t their first/primary language. You speak much more carefully than we do and at a slower pace which is very helpful for people to understand. I think that is a major plus and a brownie point for speaking in your natural pace and accent. If that is important to you then I think that is something to ponder upon ☺️. Also, how do like the bread-maker? I have been contemplating buying one but have never taken the plunge 🤭
@VictoriaSagely
@VictoriaSagely 4 месяца назад
Yes, we really do have a strong insecurity, haha. Not everyone experiences it, though; mostly the younger generation or people my age, because teens nowadays are even better at speaking English than we are. I agree with your point that speaking at a slower pace makes it much easier for all the non-native English speakers to understand. I like that! I'm loving the bread maker! It originally belonged to my parents, who never ended up using it. Its usefulness really depends on your needs and how determined you are to use it regularly. I like to make not only bread but also buns and pizza dough with it. I find it quicker to use and easier to clean than bringing out my kitchen machine 😊
