This Video is on Stick welding overhead with 7018 electrodes.
Amperage needs to be hot enough so that when you hold a very tight arc , the rod will not stick.
Arc length needs to be short.
Rod angle needs to be kept to a minimum..only 5-15 degrees.
A long arc will result in molten metal falling out of the puddle and will not produce good results.
I used 125 amps for this video but all machines are a bit different and even 7018 rods are different.
For example, a Lincoln Excalibur 7018 might require more amperage than a hobart from tractor supply.

I've been a welder since 1972. I began as a helper and practiced during breaks and lunch. Got my 1st opportunity to make two 3g uphill welds because the welder couldn't fit through the porthole. My welds were UT'd as passing. I'm currently certified AWS D1.1/5.20 Unlimited thickness positions; flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead. As a boiler maker welding heat exchangers, I was ASME certified 30 years ago.

Watched another of your videos years back with the "hot enough to hold tight arc; then hold a tight arc", had trouble with a welding school test.. needed your advice, ended up running ~135amps, ran it tight, bead layed in there perfectly. Got enough arc force to really flatten the bead. Your advice is legit Jody.

That little 1/4" movement right as you're finishing the bead is something I haven't been doing. Seems it leaves a much nicer finish. Gonna have to try that. Also, I find it fascinating how someone who's been doing this probably longer than I've been on this Earth says "I need some practice" .. I feel that's a huge point to take away from this video. Great stuff 🙌🏻

i attended welding school back in Chicago when I was 18 or 19 for about six months. I passed my vertical up and my overhead on the first try (8013 Root and 7018 hot and covers) but it seems back then that I just went through the motions on auto pilot... I actually have learned MORE here with Jody doing Stick & Tig welding than I ever did then. Most of our training went to Oxy-acetylene Radiograph cutting and stick welding. The Heliarc machine for Tig only went to the students that paid the extra fee out of their pockets which wasn't covered by the student loan ($2,200 extra) Boy... we could hardly afford our $3.00 lunches back then so Tig was out of our league. It was done with pure helium with those Arco welders (2 tons welders!) and all I got was a crappy job at a metal furniture factory where the only process was done with Mig for $5.00 an hour! So I had to learn on the job and on the go and never got to work with Stick welding again for years, Crap! I wasted all that money on school and didn't pursued welding until I was over 50 and your channel is about the best school I ever attended. Now I have my own welding business and if it wasn't for Jody, I would still be working for some factory Korean slaver bleeding me out! Thanks for all your Love of the trade Master Jody. I love doing Tig and Mig but for some enamored reason, Stick is and will always be my first Love!

Something that my instructor showed me was when I'm running my bead I have the rod pushed up to where I can feel the hard rod dragging on the plate. If my travel speed is too slow, I am depositing too much metal in one area which results in it dripping down too. So even if you are welding a little cold and have a correct feed rate , it should be ok. Definitely a tight ark is key. Great video. I'm learning every day!
