We have had a few requests for videos using 5/32" 7018.
This video is about a vertical uphill fillet weld using 7018 5/32" diameter electrodes.
Amperage range for this rod is 130-210 and we welded the whole joint out using 140 amps.
The main things to pay attention to on any weld using 7018 are ...
amperage, polarity, arc length, angle of rod, manipulation or technique, and travel speed.
For even more options, check out my Amazon recommended products page at www.amazon.com...

If you're doing a plate test, taking the time to let the plate cool between passes can really be beneficial in preventing undercut and sag. Great video as always, just wanted to add my 2 cents.
@fe8199
@fe8199 3 года назад
Sign of a welder worth his money though is one that approaches the test like they would a weld on a job site, and on a job site where time is money...you can't cool your parts down and constantly be changing your amperage. Want to be a welder that's worth his money...learn to make amazing welds quickly and without constantly changing your amperage. This can be achieved by learning different techniques of rod manipulation for different situations

Is this welding in real time? It seems as though i am traveling faster when i do it. This makes it look so easy.
@dazdavis7896
@dazdavis7896 2 года назад
You’re going faster than that? He’s already going pretty quick for a weave pattern. Unless you’re burning pretty hot like he was up around 140 then you’re probably getting like no penetration.
@DXT61
@DXT61 2 года назад
@@dazdavis7896 I was using 1/8 but i believe i was just running too hot. Think ive bumped it down to 110-115 for uphill. I think my problem was too hot which was causing the metal to drop and bulge up in places and i was moving faster to compensate as opposed to dropping the amps. Think i was at 125 initially but that was 1/8 7018.

@@DXT61 I was just about to ask if you were runnin a 5/32 7018 instead of a 1/8 that woulda made more sense them telling you run it that low…. Heavy duty 6010, 6011, 6013, 7018 welding on the train cars and what not, he always told me it’s better to burn too hot than too cold.

I was taught by a 65 year old man over 25 years ago how to weld. I've never been to school for welding. I use an old style Jackson welding hood. It's not arch flash. It's a typical old school welding hood. I weld Exxon gasoline tankers daily. And milk tankers a lot. The welder I use is a Miller from like 1980. My point is. Why do you need all these fancy welders with all these settings I don't even understand how to work. I'm thinking it's all unnecessary. Oh yeah, I use an old Ideal welder cracker box for welding 7018's. It has no setting at all really just an old dial for heat up and down. I pass welding tests every time they make me do them. With the machines I use everyday. It is what it is I guess.
@JonDingle
@JonDingle 4 года назад
I am self taught and prefer the old school welders. Both of my Mig's were made in the 1990's, I have a 1984 oil Oxford 180amp cooled AC stick welder and a 2002 Oerlikon Presto 140 G inverter welder which I use a lot in my videos and on farm repairs. Old stuff is perfectly good, no need to spend thousands of $$$$ or ££££ on welders, it is the man or woman working the arc the makes the weld not the machine!

Maybe some tips or tricks for coping one to meet the other would be nice too. Hi Jody, Love your videos been watching for years, always great help and information! Was thinking of an idea for a video, 3F vertical up stick weld etch test comparison! Thinking 6013 root and cap, 7016/18 single pass, 7016/18 root and cap and then a typical 6010/11 root and 7016/18 cap! Would also love to know how a vertical down 6010/11 root with a 7016/18 vertical up would go! And have you ever found rod thickness/flux affects root penetration on a fillet weld or is it really only a concern on 3G with fitting in the groove? Just in my mind for example a 2.5mm 7016 is much smaller so sit tight in the V while a 5mm 7018 would be harder to keep tight in there! Thanks, Harvey

These videos are so helpful. To help my (mainly) hobby welding, I took a beginner's class at the local tech college 25 years ago and was taught a "whip" manipulation for this kind of weld, with 1/8" 7018 (I also have a textbook which recommends a similar method). I had a tough time getting that right and never did perfect the method, partly because I can usually set the position of the work to avoid difficult positions, which has the negative side-effect of eliminating practice time! It is SO good to see not only a completely different method for doing vertical-up fillet welds, but also a functional explanation of why that particular weave works well. This looks easier to "get right" than the method I've always used in the past, and I'm making a note to try this myself.

i cant weld stick at all i only get slag included and i cant see it while i weld for some reason no matter what technique i use i get porosity and slag inclusion in some places even on horizontal why i dont understand, if i weld flat on top of a piece of metal it works perfectly, if i weld 2 pieces of metal 90 degree i get massive porosity and inclusion, yet 2 pieces of metal head to head with no space between welds perfectly, i really need to fix my welding for a job and cant understand what im doing wrong

Look at your rod angle, of it's not right it will snuff out the arc, also look at whether your arc is too close as it can happen then too. If required, turn up the Amps a little at a time, some people like it hot, some cold, play about and you will find your clean bead 👍

are you welding on 1/2" plate?, if so, excellent welds, learning the big stick will help you master 1/8" lo hi, which is the standard for out of position welding. not to many companies will allow 5/32, too cumbersome and not many welders can master it. overhead is easier. i used it on some ships, but foremen said use the 1/8, more productive.

Always learning something about the process. I never knew this type of angle and uphill was even possible. When starting out you learn that the angle behind in a pull helps push the slag however it's clearly not necessary with rod type and technique.

My hardest issue welding is just finding the right rod for the metal i am welding. I am self taught so sometimes i have to experiment to find the right rod. One of the hardest but most successful welds i ever made was a case hardened steel collar welded to a cast flange on a gas compressor. It ran for years with 150 psi and the vibration of a two stage compressor. Never ever leaked not to bad for self taught in the field. But wish i had more knowledge of the different grades of steel and aluminum it would make choosing rods easier.
