Overlooked Volca Keys Sequencer Feature
Today we're looking at an often overlooked feature of the Volca Keys sequencer! I've been seeing quite a lot of Volca Keys jams on YT lately, mostly from new users, and everyone seems to skip the motion sequencing feature! Motion sequencing allows you to record your parameter changes into your sequence (think parameter locking), smooth them out if you'd like, toggle that smoothing on and off, as well as toggle the entire motion sequence on and off! This leads to some killer sounds and performance options, and should not be missed. Enjoy the video :)

Aah, yes, motion sequencing 😊 But you know what's cooler? The keys' most overlooked sequencer feature? 128 step (8 bar) patterns in flux mode! How cool is that?! I know I'm annoying with that, but I really think it's a feature more people should know about 😅

Looking at getting a volca keys, could you explain how to get an 8 bar pattern?

I'm curious too

Sorry i was sure i answered to that 😅 Ok, so first of all make sure you have the latest firmware installed. It will enable step 8 in global parameters (that you'll have to activate) which is sync every two steps) So, the way flux mode works is that it quantifies your playing to 32th notes in your one bar pattern. But if you set up your speed/tempo to 1/4, sync it up to a volca drum machine, you'll have an 8 bar pattern! I demonstrate it in a couple of jams on my channel. But what if you want shorter sequences? I play with the active steps; two steps equals one bar. I think this is by far the most inspiring volca in the collection, and i'd like sometime to perform the midi out mod. Hope it helped!

another way to use this is as a way to automate parameter movement. just record a sequence with no sound but just movement, let the sequence play, and play your melody over it. you can even "simulate" a lfo controlled parameter by continually turning it up and down in the sequence, and then adjust the rate with the tempo. it might not be "clean", but it's pretty fun. even better if you have an external sequencer and you can sequence notes thru that, and parameters on the volca

I have a Beatstep, the regular one... do you think it would be cool to randomize or use the scales on the BS to play around with the Volca Keys? What would you suggest? Awesome tip!

Nice! I took my Volcas out of their case this week to give them some attention. They are so happy to be played again. 😊 I’ll be exploring this feature today.

Peak can't be motion recorded because of reasons beyond my understanding XD Such a lovely synth. I sold it because other synths were overlapping with its sound in my studio. Then got it again just because it's a unique concept, its limitations are part of its beauty, it's a very nice device. Thanks for covering this!

I’ve had the VKeys for quite a while but your vid has reminded me how capable this thing can be. I can’t remember when I last used it. Think I’ll get it out later. Thanks. Great vid.

I keep getting back to my Volca Bass...despite the simplicity of this mini synth, it is still so much fun to play with and sounds great. Perhaps a demo? Keep up the work FB...

thank you for another great step by step tutorial. I hope you do more like this. Or with a Keystep 37 combination. Or maybe a korg monologue too (if you have and use one). That would be great. Keep up the good work :)

VCO must actually be DCO because I never have to tune it, like I do with Moog Mother 32. No complaint as I prefer a ready-tuned synth. I hadn't realised the Detune is to vary the 3 osc apart instead of being a global tuning knob.

Got a Volca NuBass waiting for me at the Terminal when I get back. Looking forward to hooking it up and Jamming. It is still funny how much crap the Volca line gets in general for be being "toys", though it often seems it's by folks who spent a lot of cash on whatever hardware synth the particular volca I'd equivalent to.

They can call it a toy if they want. Won't bother me. I bought a Volca Beats and an aux cable to play it through my car stereo. Now, every time I drive my teenage son somewhere, we make music together. (Obviously, my son is handling the Volca. I just make suggestions and whatnot.) No other synth got my teenager to voluntarily take his earbuds out and jam with dad.

Hey man.. first off I'm so glad i found your channel. I subbed after watching like 10 of your very helpful videos. Love the grind. Anyway question. Maybe u can make a video. I have an MPC live connected to a key lab 49 mkII, connected to to a microkorg . I'm trying to play the microkorg sounds from the key lab to the MPC. (My keys no longer work on my microkorg and am too lazy to go in and clean lol was hoping i could make this work) Can you make a video on this?! Was also curious if this would also work with Korg volca. Thank you

I switched it on the other day and for some reason it played a really nice sort of haunted sounding sequence .all I can get out it now is an out of tune racket which seems to be all it's capable of .ive never seen it do anything useful .The volca bass seems to be better and doesn't keep going out of tune .
@Raven_of_Doom

I'm a newbie but I don't think you have to turn off recording-- light goes out on its own after the sequence goes by one time. Thanks for the vid!

What ever a volca poly synth(FM and key) they dont have step record. And volca mono synth dont have note scale too. they dont want you to program pad on them.
